I know that sr20 transmissions are super weak and everybody talks about it but no one ever says what transmission is the best to use to upgrade with. I know about the vg transmission swap but it is still a 5 speed and I would really like to go with a 6 speed manual but one that isn't weak like the s15 tranny. I was curious if anyone knows about an adapter kit for using the 350z trans or even using a mustang t5 transmission (I know it isn't a 6 speed). I am going to do a rebuild in a few months and am just trying to get some advice so I can do everything while the whole longlblock is out of the car.

If you have the money, take your stock gearbox to Richmond Gear: WELCOME TO RICHMOND GEAR (http://www.richmondgear.com/)
They can make a custom gearbox for you to handle whatever you want.
Just keep in mind that it will cost money to play.

Even that sucks...I knew a guy out here who went thru 2 SR tranny, 1 CA tranny, 1 nismo, 1 os giken then gave up and went RB25 tranny, all in less than 6 months. Then again, he had an 86 with a 450whp, TD06-25G equipped SR20DET out here.
RB25 or Z32 tranny...good enough to handle 600hp stock.
OP: Mazwork makes an adapter plate to bolt on VQ trannies off 350Z if you want a 6speed. Just not sure exactly how much power these things can handle.

dam that sucks, I just noticed that the Nismo tranny is only rated for 350ps......thats really sucks, my stock tranny is holding mor power than that

Hence the reason I'm getting planning on drop my car down to Speed Factory and getting an RB tranny in. I dont think my SR tranny will like the GT3582R pushing it one side and Nitto NT01s on the other end. I cant enjoy my car enough with the constant fear of blowing up the damn tranny...

What is you're torque? HP doesn't kill a transmission. TQ or lack of driving skill kills transmissions.
A Z32 isn't a bad choice.
-easier to source out (this statement is all relative to who you are and where you live.)
-parts for the Z32 are readily available from the dealership/aftermarket
-Mazworx is your friend, as they take all the engineering out of the equation.
The 350z six speeds are garbage. When they first came out they had a huge recall where tons of them were giving out with less than 20k miles on them.
A T5 Transmission is a feasible option, but also keep in mind that mustang guys often fly through these guys as well, anything above 350 ft. lbs starts to stress a T5. A GREAT option is a new OEM mustang cobra R transmission. I've personally seen some of the worst abuse I've ever seen with a chassis pushing over 550 ft lbs. It finally gave, but it took over 3 years to finally give (of all things to fail...5th gear did). They are a bit pricey, but not really any more than a brand new nismo 6 speed.

^ I know tq is what smokes trannys but I am just trying to figure out what would be the best option. I wanted the 6 speed for cruising purposes, but at the same time I am not a millionaire. I thought about the t56 swap or something like that but too much work. The most straight forward swap has gotta be the z32 plus it is easier to be had than a skyline transmission and quite a bit cheaper. Plus I looked at mazworks website and they sell the complete kit. My goals after rebuild is between 500-600whp and tq will probably be around 400ish at the wheels
The early Z33 gearbox had syncro problems especially with third gear.
The gears themselves are very, very strong, and the later ones have fixed that problem.
To find a later version one, like the most sought after CD009, is becoming more rare and expensive though.
Your cheapest and easiest bet is the Z32 5 speed honestly.

does the mazworks kit allow you to use the sr flywheel and clutch or do i have to use the z32?

The Mazworx kit allows you to run the SR flywheel and clutch setup. With that said the Z32 obviously has the same spline setup and will allow you to use the Z32's larger clutch, if you get the JWT clutch kit. I believe the SR clutch is 240mm with the Z32 clutch being 250mm...

yeah talk to mazworx about it, if you can run a larger clutch like the z32, that would be a def. bonus to add to the setup.
