Hope this doesn't look too noob-ish :)

Right now my car is dripping out a quart of oil per week mainly from the oil pan, and possibly a little from the front cover. In order to fix that I'm gonna probably have to spend close to (if not more than) a thousand bucks to get the engine out, fix it, and put it back. Not worth it on a motor that's nearing 150k, so I'm just gonna get a new one. I really really am having a hard time with which way to go since the SR is so tempting, but I don't think I can live with the cost and trouble to run that motor. A reman KA would be a sounder investment since even though it's not a lot cheaper, it would be a brand spankin new engine that anyone can work on if need be. Keep in mind this is my only car and I drive 20k a year, so reliability is a BIG thing, and I just can't seem to convince myself that the SR would be a good decision.

However, since doing fun stuff to the new engine would be real easy at this juncture, I am wondering if there's a better option than just buying a fleet-spec remanufactured motor from somebody. I really don't have the skill or knowledge to rebuild myself, and there is not much info anywhere on NA KA beyond basic bolt-ons.

I guess I'm looking for somebody who would rebuild a KA24DE with just a little more unf than stock. Is there any company that does this sort of thing?

Off the top of my head...

AfterDark Tuning (http://www.afterdark-tuning.com/category.phtml?i=Motors&j=KA24DE) has built KA engines listed on their web site.

Their '200hp KA24DE' package looks good. Though you might convince them to skip the port and polish and high compression to and substitute cams like the JWT 252's or the PDM Stage II's.

This guy (Joe) (http://www.negative-camber.org/jam149/240tech.html) has a really well set up NA KA (hell his whole car is really well set up).

this is a little off-topic but what exactly is done on your basic rebuild of an engine imparticularly the ka24e , is it just patience , knowledge , tools , and an engine crane/stand thing...? cz depending on what IS involved i think my baby could use one she is quite the tired ole' gal.

I'm in the same boat as huntz0r. I have a KA24E that has a smoking problem and would prefer a new performance KA to an SR.

Hmmm didn't know Afterdark was finally up. The vast cornfields of Iowa arent too far away....

cool! ... even if I go stock in the end you just saved me $600 from the cheapest rebuilt motor I had found already :D

$3250 is up there though... maybe I could get some and not all of that stuff done for a more moderate price. Verrrry interesting nonetheless.
