My GF got one a week after she moved here from FL.
Shit was weak, she was lost and called me for directions, I hear "oh fuck...click"
I get a text, "fml I just got pulled over."
So her ticket was $132 for a first time offender and even with an FL DL, so idk man. I think you might just have to cough up that money.

is it that difficult to pull over and make a call, or use the speaker-phone?
might be worth your while to get a blue-tooth (just don't use it in public like an A-hole).
I don't agree with everything when it comes to CA law,
but talking/texting on the phone is a problem here in CA,
esp when it comes to ppl who can barely drive or drive too slow anyways.
only wish the law extended to other distracting activity,
like 'applying make-up', eating, & reading while driving.

So true... i was in Pomona at a diner eating and out the window I saw a cop while driving with his Iphone in hand.. WTF!! I wish he would have crashed and died with the phone in hand... THE IRONY!!... not really tho that would be fucked up(about the dying part).

my state recently banned texting while driving. i was super pissed, because i text and drive all the time.
then i read that it was only for drivers under 21 years of age, so i was like, oh cool.

It's not so much the phone holding.
Because people suck at driving as is, as you stated.
It's getting involved in the conversation and not focusing on driving.
Holding the phone is just as bad as using blue tooth.
Talking to someone in the car with you is just as bad.
So the whole talking on the phone thing is stupid.
Texting I could see people getting tickets for.
But to me, I don't see the need for tickets while talking on the phone.

all i can say is that i got my cell ticket...... the bike cops here near riverside have regular street biker fronts with a black full face helmet
i saw a biker i moved to the side while using my phone to make a quick call i hung up and the blue and red set off the cop pulls his full face shield up and i just see white and gold
so from the front looks like an ordinary biker with black helmet but from the rear looks like a cop . tripped me out at 1st
i paid my fees hoping he didnt show up to court and he didnt and i got my full refund
however if he wouldve showed up i wouldve been screwed and would have court fees added to ticket
GOOD LUCK!

Or just don't get caught.
I've talked/texted while next to a cop before.
No biggie.

Im not trying to be a dick but, cell phone fines are cheap compared to other things out there. Just pay the stupid fine and be thankful it isnt a huge fine. The end.

thats what gets me. as more and more phones are being integrated as a central media point for us all, these laws will sorta screw with things. thats when we revolt!!!

Meh, when I drive my only distraction is tobacco.
Sometimes I forget to turn on the radio. I never notice. I just genuinly enjoy driving. Cell phone in the glove compartment. Windows down. Yeaaaahhh.

pay the fine or get a lawyer n fight it. i dont know how people talk while driving, even with bluetooth. i know im not in total control and i dont like that, so if i get a call ill answer and say ill call you back usually. texting while driving is just dumb. when i first started driving, my dad wouldnt let me bring my phone with me. and IIRC i payed for my own car and phone.

i'm petitioning against manual transmissions. i look forward to the government commercials featuring hip young adults singing about hands at "TEN AND TWO OR JAIL FOR YOU!"
it'd kinda go like this classic. but instead of looking like "lilith faire", it'd be more "street wear".

there no way of reducing the fee, but if your short on cash. see the judge and explain to him your financial problem and try to pay in payments or do community service hour instead of paying.

first of all, yes, i know bluetooth is easy, but it was in my other car...still, no excuse...
second, who the fuck would really pull the car over exiting an onramp to make a call notifying a friend that i am coming...seriously
third, the fine is not that much ($132), but if i can do something about it to reduce it, why wouldnt i? lol at that "dont be cheap and pay the fine blah blah blah" comment...
fourth of all...YES, this law is STUPID! as mel mentioned, a common misconception is that holding the phone to your head is the main distraction...next time youre driving, hold a dildo up to your head, and see if you lose concentration (ok, with a dildo, even i might lose focus)...its the actual conversation...they need to revise this stupid law
someone mentioned traffic school? its not considered a moving violation, so no one is eligible for traffic school...
well, its due in less than a week so i guess ill just cough it up...glad to help the states deficit, i guess
P.S. i thought this topic would have been beaten like a red headed step child by now, but i guess not...i have a number of REALLY good links on what exactly to do if you want it completely wiped off (if you want to go through the extra hassle)...theyre on my home comp...too lazy to search at work right now...maybe this can be a CA sticky? :bigok:

Somebody said something about cops being on cell phones.
Obviously that law doesn't apply to them. Sometimes officers do have to call other officers instead of over the radio for whatever reason it may be. Work or goofing off (probably the later).
When I did my ride along with CHP, the officer did use his phone on a few occasions, but it was work and he actually did pull over one time.. (one time), but I think it was a coincidence because we where doing a plate check for stolen vehicles hehe.
But anyways, yeah, just have to be more careful if you still wish to talk or text on the phone. I know I'm guilty of texting on the road, but I'm usually on the road late nights anyways so there is little to no traffic at all.

not sure if you guys still care about the situation or the subject...today was my last day to appear in court and/or pay the bail...so all i did was request an extension online...one click and it was granted (lol), now that i have exactly another month, i might actually try to fight it (or utilize one of effective loopholes)
here are the links as i promised (a week or so late =D)...these two are pretty much the leading authority on getting away scotch free (if you want to go through the trouble; im still debating):

talking on the cell and texting law is a good thing,(bluetooth, that is why your phone comes with one)
hopefully they extend it to other things that distract the driver (eating, reading, etc) Not all but a lot of drivers in CA suck balls
