Around winter time is the time I'll have enough money to get some wheels and performance tires. I have a 91 Sentra (I know it's a 240 forum, I'm sorry but I know you guys could help me out here) and the stock tire size is like 13's...yeah yeah. and I want 16's or 17's on there. Either Nitto 555 or Nitto 450 Xtreme tires. and I was wondering if I should just wait until after winter to get the tires/rims or would they help out the performance in the snow? it's FWD so won't be real bad, but would they keep me from sliding so much if it were to happen? or vice versa, slide more? thanks a lot guys, I didnt' know which section to put it in and I thought Tech Talk was the appropriate category.
dont get the 555 they have horendous treadwear

I wouldn't go with a 17' for the sentra unless you're going for the looks. 15' or 16' is good enough.
As for snow, I know a guy with sport tires (ZR rating) on a 240 (rear wheel drive) that could outrun a 3000GT. This is in snow now, so I think it would really depend on the tire and its tread design. As for Nitto, I don't know. I know that the tires my friend is using cost him $200+ each. I've never heard of the brand before either so I don't remember the name... Sorry, wasn't too helpful there.
i run rain tires all year long. hey, i live in vancouver. it rains every second day. yokohama avid h4. At the least, you should get all-seasons.
How do you guys survive in your 240s in snow-time? I've only had mine for a few months and I already have some problems when it's raining. And what tires do you recommend?
the yoko avid h4's were the only lo-pro rain tires I could find. They're ok, but no tire will really help a rwd in the rain as you all know. I'd stay away from Bridgestones. I was driving my buddy's supra, going about 20 in the rain, and I went for a little spin. The tires were only a few months old. Don't know what model of tire they were though.

I've done the whole '240 during the winter' thing, and here's the best advice I've come up with so far: leave it home. Seriously, call up those friends who insisted you drive them to Canada because they knew you could get them there sooner, and tell 'em it's payback time because your car is deathly afraid of the snow, and you need a ride to the diner now. Uhm, hypothetically.

I totally missed that post above my last one - don't know how. Yeah, Yokohoma Avid H4's I've been told are the best. Snow is definately a different beast altogether, but those are the tires I used in the rain for two years without any trouble.
I have a mildly amusing story about why I wound up with those, but I'm not sure anyone would care. Those of you who fit into that catagory, stop reading now. =)
So, I bought my '91 SE with shitty tires on it (I insisted the price be lowered for pretty much that alone, because everything else was pretty nice) so a new footprint at every corner was definately what I needed first. A friend of mine also picked up a 240 around the same time I did, and he began his quest for the perfect tire. He read reviews, checked specs, did all kinds of crazy research. I, on the other hand, went to my trusted mechanic and said "Ok, this is a sports car, so I want a tire that will let me have fun, but it's also my only car, so I want a tire that'll keep me on the road - pick something out. Thanks."
He replaced 'em, I paid him, and went my merry way. I drove 60 down a curvy 25 and the car felt as if it were riding on rails, so I was pleased enough to not even bother checking what he picked out.
Two weeks later, my friend proudly proclaimed the completion of his research and his selection of "the best tire ever". He was quite excited. I asked him what he was getting. He said "Yokohama Avid H4's, baby", enthusiastically. I said "That name sounds really familiar". "It couldn't", he replied. I said "Nonono, I really thing I've heard that before". So, we walked out to my car to see what kind of rubber wrapped around my rims.
You guessed it. Yokohama Avid H4's. Man, my mechanic rocks. =)
