Total cost: $8, and I can still do another car with the amount of trim left, lol.

Hahahaha
He thinks his car is low! (Not saying mine is)
But then I guess I'm comparing him to all those guys in the option videos with no type of bodykit nearly touching the ground.

That's the first and last time you'll say anything like that on this forum. Consider yourself warned.

That lip is extremely low. How'd you do it??

I'm wondering if this will actually do anything for autox... considering how low speed it is. Just driving around normally though, it's sort of funny. It "feels" like there's less wind noise from under the car (don't have the lower splash guard in....), but it's probably just in my head. LoL.
Anyways, I was bored today, and I had said I was gonna do it, so I did it. It'll be really "cool" for the AutoX, possibly keep cones from lodging underneath the car :P

not bad... if your looking for some nice do them yourself sides you can actually get some at home depot... one of my friends did it on his 2000 accord and it looks good. wish i had some pics but i dont.
in case you were wondering, what you do is get a flat rain gutter (the ones that go on the side of the house) and angle them out or whatever your heart desires. its fairly easy to bend cause its alluminum. all you have to do is get some metal brackets and bolt them up.
cant hurt to try... its actually cheaper than eight buck iirc, but i know for sure its less than two hundred dollars.
Those lips have been known to bend/flex under fast speeds...so...just an FYI...I hope you secured that puppy on there TIGHT.
Being as low as it is to the ground, I would try to avoid ANY and ALL road debris at any cost...because you'd hate to have soemthing rip that right off.

wow... that's not a bad idea!! of course, I kind of like the non- side skirt look with the low air dam... but, can't hurt to spend $3 on some gutters. lol.
Also, the zipties I used weren't strong at all. I rammed some gravel going onto a driveway and tore the whole thing off. Actually, since the zipties were weak they broke instead of anything else, so I'll try larger zip ties and possibly some wire or something next.
LMAO THAT'S AWESOME!!!
HAHA
i wonder...if u put some real supports behind it to keep it from flexing...would it help in autoX?
too bad u dont have a G-tech. uc ould run some fun lil tests

Lookin good.
If I were you I would make some brakets out of something weaker than your real bumper and put them behind add on, One in the middle and one at each corner.
mainevent212: I dont think it would help too much in autoX, correct me if im wrong, but the point of it would be to keep air from getting under your car and creating drag on components under there. By not allowing air under the car, it reduces lift at high speed and makes the car more stable. I think most autoXs are short to reach these high speeds.

Id get some metal fasteners. I used them when I needed to secure my Exhaust on my KA-T s14 by putting them around the rubber hangers to hold the exhaust on (damn HKS Dual Dragger was HEAVY). Anyways, give those a try, you can get them real small and cost like 20 cents a piece.

At the last AutoX I was able to get into 3rd, so if it helps at all at 70mph then it's worth it. As for testing, I guess I could see if I could better my current record of 24.5mpg (as less drag should increase gas mileage). Not an accurate test, but if I suddenly get 25 or 26 (took some REAL effort to get 24.5) then I'll just say it's the lip spoiler (which would pay itself back in a few fill-ups!!).
The material itself is hard plastic, so I'm not too worried about it flexing. When you kick it, the entire front bumper shakes as a whole.

Wouldn't there be more drag because of the larger frontal surface area, so theoretically you should get worse gas milage:D but your car should be far more stable while getting that gas milage.
Edit: can't spell theoretically

Of course everyone has diffrent opinions on stuff so here is mine.
I personally think from looks alone it looks like ass. One person who I think did a good job of something like that was Alex Cheng from FA. it looked really good on his S13.

-Matt Naw, because the bottom of the car creates much more drag than the added frontal area.

Damnit, I was hoping for something a little more flexible when I went to Lowe's this morning. Instead, I was out for 2 hours and got NOTHING. Not even Panera bread. (8:03 is after 8:00, yet somehow the doors were still locked:mad:  )

I wonder why Alex Cheng's looks any better??
Everyone who's seen it in person digs it. Apparently it looks better in person than in the pics, but, it serves some purpose, and if I really cared about looks I might've hammered out the dents in my driver's side door by now.

Why more flexible?? It's kind of nice having it solid, otherwise what purpose would it serve?

Ace:
Nice work full respect for trying something like this. dunno how far you want to go but replacing the tube running the length of the section with a horizontal splitter and 'glassing would seriously add to performance. Maybe smoothing the transition from the splitter to the middle section too...
don't forget that the same effect occurs at the sides and back due to suction in the rear so keep goin'...

btw:
Can't tell from the pics but you need to becareful of a few things;
-Do not let the lower section stick out less than the top section or you'll get lift...
-Keep the curvature of the section as light as possible or you'll cause vortices to form wich will kill your drag coefficient and do far more harm than good (looking at the side of the car)
-If you end up with both above conditions you'll spoil air flow and at 70mph may create enough lift to cause some serious danger issues....

looks REAAALLLY odd on a s14. especially with no side skirts. and its pretty obvious that you have garden trim on your bumper.

Alex's is *not* just garden trim...it's something he got from Don Nimi...

Didn't know that. Definitely looks like garden trim though:

I was thinking of doing something like that. What I think would be cool would be to use the trim that's on the car right now as a base for making a more permanent fiberglass peice. I've already had to raise it about a half inch though, and it still scrapes on anything that resembles a steep incline or speed bump. So, what I'm worried about is constantly cracking the fiberglass or whatever material I use for the splitter (I.E. some sheet metal, which is cheap).
As for the sides, I may use more garden trim on the "rails" on the underside of the car, so that it doesn't look too disgusting (LOL). Unfortunately though, sometimes looks have to get sacrificed for performance.

I thought it was going to look awkward also. Only thing is, it really doesn't, even when you look at it up close. But then again, I like how the car looks without side skirts, and some people hate it.
Thanks for all the comments, positive or negative. Keep em coming if you want.

hey ACE are you going try to do the sides??? not like you burning a hole in your wallet. but if you dont
"to each his own" (<~something that ppl in this fourm need to get set in there minds) . oh yeah and about your front considering you DIY and it didnt burn a hole in your wallet, thumbs up to you buddy :D

On second thought, I would just leave it plastic, reinforce from the back but f-glass won't add too much except problems. Maybe get out the heat gun and get it really hot to relieve some of the residual stresses from the bending, and lots of guys use 1/2" plywood for splitter mat'l.
Oh, and the sides will most definately have to be reinforced because w/out the bend they'll be really flexible and prone to getting sucked under the car...

I think some metal brackets would work well for reinforcement in a few places. I could even use L-brackets so I have something to bolt the splitter to.

I think the zip ties are doing a good enough job at handling the stress from the bending. I'm worried that heating it up will take away from the sitffness it has.

Yeah, I'll need to figure out a way to bracket them in anyways. I think hiding the sides by attaching them to the frame "rails" would work well. I'd have more of a surface to mount on, too.
The other idea that's been brought up is to use a length of large diameter PVC piping to make a durable side skirt that would have a nice "roll" to it. PVC is pretty heavy duty, so I think I wouldn't have any issues with it flexing.
The rear is probably going to be the hardest part, though..... I was thinking sheetmetal, but at high speeds I might get a lot of noise from it.
