this must be a really noob question but i was wondering if surface rust on coilover springs really matter? i recently took a look at my megan coilovers and i noticed there is significant surface rust on the 2 front coilover springs.. do i need new springs or should i paint over it or is this typical and nothing serious?

They're Megans. Taking some high exposure shots of rust on springs and calling it art is about the only good thing you will get out of them.
I wouldn't worry about surface rust on the springs, and unless you drive on the beach daily, you probably got a few more years to go (long after your struts are already blown and in the garbage) until rust causes some significant damage to the spring

On the springs? shouldn't matter, since its surface rust.
now if it's on the shaft of the coilover itself, then you have a problem..
