I have the rear end up in the air by having the tires on ramps.

Think about this. If the driveshaft could freely spin in this configuration, how would the car ever go anywhere when the transmission spins the driveshaft?

You have to put the tires up in the air... like put the car on jackstands, not ramps, for the driveshaft to spin freely. It still doesn't spin freely, one or two of the tires will also rotate, depending on your differential type.
