SO my current S14's KA is going into a Co-workers Son's car (i'm gonna install) and the damn Thing Pulls hard - starts everytime, but sounds like SHIZZLE!! I don't want it This way in his car when its Ready to go.
Wondering if I need to Replace the chain and Guides or Just remove the guides?I know nothing about the guides or if they even need to be there like I thought I read.
This is not your average KA rattle. It sounds like Complete SHIT and w/ the a/c on - Worse.
Checked the main TOP "TSIB" Guide and its already gone,so Scratch that.
Fellow Tech co-worker (use to work at Nissan/Now at LEXUS) thinks its Rattling against the front cover as he's seen that before.
Its def chain related.
What should I do :
1: remove the guides (if even possible)
2: Do a chain.
2b: If doing the chain what all do I need to get it done - EVERYTHING or what main Guides/tensioner etc.
Wanna make sure its Good to go when I drop it in.

if the top tensioner is stuck or gunked up it can cause slack chain to hit stuff and make noise. check that before you go replacing the whole thing. you can free it up by playing with it, cleaning it out, or outright replacing it.
if that doesn't work and the chain is indeed f'ed, alot of dealerships (and ebay) have kits for this problem. for instance:
60K Timing Chain Kit - 240SX (S14) :: Nissan Parts, NISMO and Nissan Accessories - Courtesyparts.com (http://www.courtesyparts.com/bundle-60k-timing-chain-kit-240sx-s14-p-568740.html?cPath=3690_7647_7648&)
you don't actually need ALL of these parts. the wear items (valve cover seals, oil seals, waterpump, thermostat, hose, etc.) are just good things to do while you have it apart since you're in there anyway. the main things are the two chains, the two tensioners and the two lower guides.

I've researched this quite a bit on the net and the main problem seems to be the lower tensioner. It just needs some lubrication and manipulation to get back working. The lower guides are necessary . If they have gone, that might explain why it is sawing through your cover. replace the front seal and the cover o ring.

Welp,..Pulled the Timing Cover and someone has already Removed Both Guides.
damnit.
almost Looks like the CHain may have been replaced. The Tensioners were somewhat Clean.
The Top Tensioner was Stuck.DID not move by hand.Free'd that one up,..but the one under it,seems to be stuck also.Is it SUpposed to Move in/out by hand like the TOP One??
Its the One w/ the Lower Guide Sitting/resting on it (that I know dosen't come out).
Need to Know if the Lower Tensioner Needs to be Free'd up also????

After putting it all back together...seems it has me thinking now, its Lifter noise or DO THESE cars need valve adjustment like any others???Prob Right?
Car is Quieter at idle now,....but noise still there.I would go as far as saying the New Updated Chain Guide was even installed.
Mine sounds like a Rattle Snake Rattle. Not so much the Marble in a tin can sound like my other KA had.Noise Dosen;t get faster but just gets louder w/ Revs..so Spum bearing I would say Its Not.

No, unless he wants to destroy his engine.
Free the tensioners with some deep creep or amsoil power foam. You need the lower chain guide. If the tensioner is stuck the chain could jump. Free the tensioner so you can put pressure on the chain easily. Then look into autorx if you want quiet, id then suggest amsoil 5w30 with an oversized filter.
The tensioner puts tension based off oil pressure, using convensional oil can soot up the tensioner regardless of OCI's.
I dont care what anybody says, dino oil has its downsides, unless you have a rotary.

Nodays people have adapted to doing what other people tell them to do, thus requiring sales people. I didnt want the OP or a member actually taking that seriously because you never know, people are dumber than they were 10 years ago.

Tensioner's are Free now. They were Very clean but I used a verity of Sprays from work - Brake Clean then this Crazy Lubricant (better than WD40).Moves nicely Now.
Lower one I put a Flat head between the Guide and the Chain and twisted and Got it pretty loose.Enough to where it moves now.IDLE is Pretty Quiet.
My Issue I believe is Lifter Noise. - Rattle Snake.Sounds Worse than I believe it is.Maybe Not worth Replacing Lifters but Diff oil is my Next Step.
valve Adjustment would be a P.i.t.a but might help also.
