sr20 inspection

a guy locally is selling an sr swap for a decent price, i figured i might as well pick it up and start another car.

the thing is i know he threw a rod bearing in another engine.

ive never built an engine, i have a decently good knowledge on how most 4 cylinders are assembled and the components present in the block, and i know my way around a head.

but experience>knowledge

so i figured ill pull the head off to check valves and piston dome and sleeves.

then ill want to take the oil pan off to inspect the crank, main bearings, rod bearings etc.
anyone have a suggestion on what i should be looking for, i can imagine that if the bearing is gone completely then ill have a prob, but other than that, any little things to check.

id like to do a compression test, but i obviously wont be able to since its out of the car.

and i dont have the tools for a leak down test.

do not attempt to turn over the engine with a spun bearing it will cause more damage, you might as well do a full rebuild since your breaking it down that far.

Crank journal's should look polished and feel smooth

wel its not a sure thing, im just trying to make sure nothing sketchy is going on.

i have no reason to believe the engine has anything wrong with it, or that the seller is a bad guy. i dont think he is.

but i do know that he had an sr20 240 that spun a bearing. he then search for just a long block, and got it swapped out.

then a few months later has a full swap to sell, my worry is that the block of the swap he is selling now is the old one.

its probably an unfounded idea, but its way better safe than sorry.

im not sure im up to the task of rebuilding an engine.

id much rather have a stock sr20 in a coupe, and have EXTENSIVE suspension mods. this car will be a dd, along with my em1, but i plan on circuit/road racing it as well as drifting and auto x. so im not needing huge power.

if the crank is still assembled could i still check out the bearings and be able to extract useful information?
