alright i have a budget of 1500, but 1700 is the most i can spend. I've come to 2 different pcs.

Studio XPS 435
Studio XPS 435, Genuine Windows Vista® Home Premium Edition SP1, 64-Bit
Intel® Core™ i7-920 processor(8MB L3 Cache, 2.66GHz)

8GB Dual Channel DDR3 SDRAM at 1066MHz - 4 DIMMs

21.5 inch Dell S2209W Full HD Widescreen Monitor

Soundblaster® X-Fi™ Xtreme Audio

ATI Radeon HD 4870 GDDR5 1024MB

640GB 7200 RPM SATA Hard Drive

2Yr Ltd Hardware Warranty, InHome Service after Remote Diagnosis

Dell USB Consumer Multimedia Keyboard , Dell Laser Mouse

Dell AX510PA 10W Attached Speaker for Dell Flat Panel Monitors

Single Drive: 16X CD/DVD burner (DVD+/-RW) w/double layer write capability

are the main components.

the second choice is a HP Pavilion Elite e9150t customizable Desktop PC

# Genuine Windows Vista Home Premium with Service Pack 1 (64-bit)
# – Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-920 processor (2.66GHz, 1MB L2 + 8MB shared L3 cache with QPI Technology)
# – 9GB DDR3-1066MHz SDRAM [5 DIMMs]
# – 750GB 7200 rpm SATA 3Gb/s hard drive
# – 1GB ATI Radeon HD 4850 [2 DVI, HDMI and VGA adapters]
# – LightScribe 16X max. DVD+/-R/RW SuperMulti drive
# – Wireless-N LAN card
# – 15-in-1 memory card reader, 1 USB, 1394, audio
# – No TV Tuner w/remote control
# – Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Audio
# – 20% OFF! HP 2.1 30W stereo speakers with subwoofer and remote control
# – HP multimedia keyboard and HP optical mouse
# – Microsoft(R) Works 9.0
# – Norton Internet Security(TM) 2009 - 15 month
# – HP Home & Home Office Store in-box envelope

Both are 1700 shipped to my door. Along with the difference in video card and 1 gb ram, and a little over 100gb in memory, they are both the similar. The hp pc has a wireless network card and the dell doesnt have that option, another reason for the high price is the waranty which im not sure of. I bought a hp laptop with the warranty and i have yet to need it repaired in the 2 years that i''ve had it. A third choice is to build my own pc for 1500, i would need to buy all the components and monitor/keyboard.

You can do better than that with a homebuilt and do it without about half your budget... There are a couple users local to you who will likely chime in on this thread. At the amounts you've named, I could have a PC built that could damn near cure cancer and solve the economy.

The problem, though, is that there are MORE users who will IGNORE what the thread says and offer not much more than "get a Mac" as their response, even though you're decently specific with what you want. They're usually so persistent that they will fuck your thread until one of us just has to lock it, so I suggest you familiarize yourself with the report post button, as I am now done with this thread until my email tells me otherwise.

Yeah i figured people would come in with the whole Mac suggestion. I had a macbook, but i enjoy pc more, including windows and linux. I am using this pc to play games and watch movies. If i can make a similar pc for less then i would give that a try. I am looking for 8gb or ram, more than 600 gb in my hd, and im looking for a good graphics card that can handle crysis with decent settings. I'm looking for the radeon hd 4850/ 4870 or the nvidia 9800gt.Sli or crossfire are fine or 1gb 4850/4850. What would be the con to building my own pc, i mean all i can really think of is the warranty. Even with that, since im building it i beleive fixing it shouldn't be so hard. Any help would be fine, and i would really appreciate helpful advice.

That's a nice budget.

You could build a sick ass i7 rig with like 16GB of RAM and a couple TB hdds.

I'm looking around, but since im new to building a pc im not sure what to buy or whats compatible with what. Newegg.com - SAPPHIRE Vapor-X Radeon HD 4870 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFire Supported Video Card - Desktop Graphics / Video Cards (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102825) is the is video card that im currently interested in.

Newegg.com - SAPPHIRE 100258-1GHDMI Radeon HD 4850 1GB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFire Supported Video Card - Desktop Graphics / Video Cards (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102837) is my second choice and 50+/- difference in price. so i need something that can handle either of those cards and 6-8 gb of ram. IF i could spend less than 1500 that would be great, if not then oh well.

yep for that budget you can get a pretty nice computer.

check for :
intel core i7 920
asus p6t/gigabyte ga-ex58 (or your preference)
12gb of ram (6*2gb)
WD black 1tb
ati 4890 / 4870x2 or nvidia gtx285 / gtx295

or something similar, you should get in your budget. check prices on newegg

If you're not so good with computers and such, I just looked and there's some pretty cheap pre-builts. I'm not sure if this is allowed but i'll link you to one that i would suggest. Newegg.com - CyberpowerPC Gamer Xtreme 1012 Intel Core i7 920(2.66GHz) 6GB DDR3 1TB ATI Radeon HD 4830 Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit - Desktop PCs (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883229102)

It's in the ballpark of what you're looking at but half the price.

PS. Some peripherals not included

I dont know how biased you are in terms of CPUs but I think this would be your best bang for your buck setup.

Then just use the rest of your money on a 42 inch LCD tv.

Can't really say unless you specify your objectives for the said computer.
Both might be decent or overkill depending on what you use your pc for.

If it were me, I'd build my own.

maybe go to Newegg,
with $1,500 budget, I'd get something along the lines of:
intel X58 mb $240
intel i920 chip $280
6 gb corsair ram 1600 $160
ATI 9870x2 video card $380
seagate 1 tb 7200rpm internal hard disk $100
corsair 850w power supply $140
cheapo antec case $60

approx $1,300 (before tax, shipping, & misc parts).
wish I could splurge on a 1000w ps & an external hd,
but that's the best I can do with $1,500 budget.

Back on topic;
As for the 2 choices, only nice thing is that both are using the i920 chip & mb.
the other stuff is ok, but you could do better.
I'd prob pick the Dell over the HP, just because I'd rather have a better vid card than a larger capacity HD & more ram.
I'd just end up using an external HD or two for additional storage.
Don't think I'd be able to tell with 1 more gb of ram, when you already have 8gb.
Also, personally I've had better luck with Dell products.

when it comes to the mobo and processor i have no idea what to choose.

What processor you have depends on which maker is best for MB. Personally I would go with an AMD chipset with an Asus MB. Yes a lot of people will tell you that Intel is faster, better, etc. but really the difference between a 3.0 Quadcore Intel and Amd is so neglible that it doesn't really matter. Amd Parts as a whole seem to be a bit cheaper though.

You say you want a computer but like others have said for what? If you are looking at a Radeon 4870 then I would assume gaming. What Visison Garage posted was a good starting place.

If I were building a Pc here is what I would use

Amd MD Phenom X4 9950 Black Edition
Asus MB Max 16 GB Ram
G Skill Or Corsair Ram
Corsair 620W Modular PSU
HIS Radeon HD 4890
Asus 23.6 1080P ready monitor
Western Digital 1 TB HD
WD 500 GB HD (to boot from)

thats pretty much what i've come up with, im still not completely sure. It comes out to 1092. not including shipping or mail in rebates. with shipping it'll come out to 1300. If i could i'd like to keep it closer to 1000, but im not sure where to skimp out and i might end up not caring and just spend the 1500. If i wanted to spend less i could get a cheaper lcd, same graphics card but with 512 mb instead.Oh yeah and im not completely sure if the ram is compatable with the mobo. i tried checking on the manufacture's site, but i had no luck.

When looking at this, i was wondering about the ram, on the page it says that it has 4gb of memory. Does that mean the 8gb of ram aren't fully supported or does it not factor the os in which would mean i could use the 8 as long as i have 64bit

so i'll spend 1,141.34. The major difference is that 8gb is the max amount of ram that i can have, while on the other set up i can have up to 16gb

ixfxi
06-29-2009, 10:25 AM
8gb of ram............................... a bit excessive, no?

i have 4, ~3.5 of which are being acknowledged by the OS. doesnt make a damn worth of a difference because rarely do i use that much ram, even with the million of applications i keep open.

going with a gaming pc, i can understand some use for ram.. but still i dont know how many games need that much. games typically require 2 things: fast video card #1, and fast cpu #2

i dont have any experience with the new i7 processors. dual core has been good enough for me, but im curious to experiment with the new processors this year.

ive always been content buying intel processors w/ asus motherboards (intel chipset though). kingston or crucial are both fine for memory. as for hard drives, the price differences are negligible between sizes, so buy whatever you want. the only difference i see personally are two things:
1) performance drives like the raptor drives are smaller and recommended solely for OSes, anything that relys on quick access time
2) if you buy a massive drive (1tb+) then buy one with a 5 year warranty, these are the professional grade HDDs as opposed to the more common ones available with only 3 year warranty. otherwise, dont be surprised if you have 1tb of lost data in the next couple years (it can, will and does happen)

buy yourself a nice case (antec) and buy a good psu (zalman) and you shouldnt need much else. you may want to consider going with an upgraded fan too, not sure if the i7 processor fans are as good as some of the aftermarket coolers

Here is another barebones for you to consider

Visionman VBBA-378V00 Barebone PC - AMD Phenom X4 9950 Black Ed, Asus M3A78-CM, 8GB PC6400, Gigabit, DVIDisplay Port, Flash,585W, Assembled at TigerDirect.com (http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=4360084&CatId=332)

IMO it looks a bit better than the other one, but still is pretty functional with room to upgrade. Plus its already crossfireable

to answer your question on the RAM. Depending on the OS, your Ram may or may not be utilized. Vista will automatically strip away 1G of ram just on the operating system itself. You should be able to fully use 8gb for gaming and such. I mean even if you never get to use all of it, it wouldnt be bad to have.

got this from the mobo description

The MSI K9N2 Diamond supports HyperTransport 3.0 supporting speed up to 2600MHz and can accommodate DDR2 533/667/800/1066+ memory up to 8GB

You may have seen 4gb when you wanted more info on the RAM itself. It means you are getting two sticks of ram which equal to 4GB. But with the package they are including 4 sticks.

then add one of these bad boys.

Vizio SV470XVT 47" LCD HDTV - 1080p, 1920 x1080, 120Hz Smooth Motion, 1300:1 Native, 6500:1 Dynamic, 4x HDMI, 5ms, Refurbished RB-SV470XVT1A-B at TigerDirect.com (http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=4337319&CatId=3650)

You can always add an HD video card later.

and you are set.

The problem, though, is that there are MORE users who will IGNORE what the thread says and offer not much more than "get a Mac" as their response, even though you're decently specific with what you want. They're usually so persistent that they will fuck your thread until one of us just has to lock it, so I suggest you familiarize yourself with the report post button, as I am now done with this thread until my email tells me otherwise.

lol i wonder who he could be talking about

Wow. The 4870 is CHEAP now.

I wouldn't get the 1GB unless you plan on running crazy high resolutions or multiple monitors. 512 is sufficient enough for anything 1280 and below.

Hell, that's so cheap, just get two and run them in crossfire for fun.

the 4870x2 (the 2gig card) isn't bad either for the $, @ 380-ish.
cheaper than comparative Nvidia cards at least.
I'm using one (w/a i920 chip) and it's not bad for running games like Fallout.

wonder if it would be safe to run a sli setup with dual 4870x2's, on a 1000w ps.

8gb of ram............................... a bit excessive, no?

Not really anymore, dvd ripping/encoding, photoshop and games will eat as much ram as you throw at them, going to have to run a 64 bit OS, unfortunately, and that means more compatibility problems, although they seem to get ironed out quite quickly

going with a gaming pc, i can understand some use for ram.. but still i dont know how many games need that much. games typically require 2 things: fast video card #1, and fast cpu #2

this really hasn't been true for a while, esp since most of the new GPU's do physics calculations on-card, instead of through the CPU. The bottleneck for most games is the GPU, since all the heavy lifting the CPU has to run is ai, game code, etc. Pretty much any 2.5+ghz dual core and any quad core is more than enough to play games these days ( you can thank the fixed hardware of the xbox 360 and ps3 for this). Then again with dvd ripping/encoding, the more you have the better. Some GPU's also assist with this, but at the bottom of it, its just hardcore number crunching, and the more speed and pipelines you have, the better

Vision Garage

2 what? I think I would opt for a slower CPU and get more ram than to chintz out on the RAM. You can always overclock a CPU to run faster but RAM is RAM. Once all the resources are used up, then stuff starts slowing down. It seems that this will mainly be a gaming PC. So what you should be worried about are the Graphix card, sound, card monitor and whatever house/keyboard best fits the game.

Buying a prebuilt and then dyi is the route I went. I just finished installing my corsiar 620w and a different fan on this computer I am on now. Runs my radeon 4850 like a champ.

Keep in mind that while all this stuff you are thinkinb about is cool, putting all that shit in is a different story, someone will tell you that it is a piece of cake, well if you haven't done it before, you will most likely run into some problems.

It just took me the time of a movie to do my power supply.

Also don't forget to add fans to your list of parts. Heat and PC are like fire and gas.

he's actually being very honest.

depending on your skills, you really should be careful when it comes to building your own PC. not that its impossible, but its much like building a car. i've seen plenty of cars that are slapped together and run, but they dont run right. it takes years of experience to really know how to build a proper car or computer, because its easy to make mistakes that will be quite bothersome later down the road

if you have any friends that can lend you some help/advice, it will make the transition easier.. but doing it on your own can be difficult. at least you have you tube and forums nowadays, that sure makes life easier.

I would go with Nvidia cards if I were you. A lot of games these days are optimized for Nvidia cards. You should run a couple of gtx285 in sli. You mentioned you want to play crysis on decent settings. Well crysis is optimized for nvidia cards. Plus nvidia drivers have a more support for linux than ati drivers - just to let you know even though you're not going to use linux :P

i made another build which comes out to 1200 shipped.Yet again i am still unsure. From what i've read the triple core would be cheaper and there wouldnt be a noticeable difference in performance. I upgrades the case, psu, and graphics card instead.

Ok well im either choosing a barebone or this set up. Now i cant decide on whether i should get the 2 4870 1gb or just one. I also dont know if i would need a cooler to replace the stock one, along with deciding on either buying 64 vista home premuim with a coupon for a free windows 7, or just get windows 7 beta, and buy it later. How much will windows 7 be if i upgrade from beta? i dont windows is doing that and if they arent will it be 300+?

I would stay to stay away from piecing together the computer seperately. Barebones are put together to give you the best value. They give major discounts if you buy them and at usually better put together.

you sound like a woman right now >: (

shit's like legos. there is no "better put together". get the best deal on the parts you actually want and assemble like voltron

haha I HATE YOU BUSTED! Well crap you put together a system and im pretty sure I can find a barebone system which can top it! Its the hard truth. See how the OP is piecing together a system costing him near 1300. I can take a barebone with better gear for 500 less. Add in the other stuff he wanted and still be 300 short of where the OP would be!

well, i would rather just spout off about stuff without backing it up with fact. so i'm not going to lay out a system on newegg or anything. but maybe you're right, i dunno, i haven't built a desktop in 3 years.

I told you a while ago to go with the 4890. Make sure the company who makes it is worth a damn. HIS is a good brand to go with radeon.

that list you have is pretty solid. As far as cooling, more than likely you will. Differs per setup. Even if you don't "need" it, better to have it anyways.

I mean would you rather a small smic or a big ass front mount? Putting it all together isn't super hard like it used to be, but it isn't super easy either. Everything is pretty much plug and play.

The hard part for me was what to plug in. and getting everything to fit.

That is a pretty solid set up though the monitor You are probably going to want to upgrade. I have a 19 inch Acer and I am trying to sell it to upgrade to a 23.6 Asus, but that is just me,

graphics card wise check this one out

Newegg.com - HIS H487QT1GP Radeon HD 4870 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFire Supported IceQ 4+ Turbo Video Card - Desktop Graphics / Video Cards (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814161265)

or if you don't mind the extra cash

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814161278

The one you listed seems to be okay specs wise, just read that it runs a bit hot. The one i listed. The 4850 version is so good at cooling, that it actually lowered my temps.

Double life time warranty- xfx radeon hd 4870 1gb 149.99, probably 158.00 shipped.
Newegg.com - XFX HD-487A-ZHFC Radeon HD 4870 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFire Supported Video Card - Desktop Graphics / Video Cards (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150394)

faster, better cooling sapphire radeon hd 4870 1gb- 159.99 free shipping
(this might get hotter than the non vapor-x verson )
Newegg.com - SAPPHIRE Vapor-X Radeon HD 4870 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFire Supported Video Card - Desktop Graphics / Video Cards (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102825)

good, but not as fast as the vapor-x, sapphire radeon hd 4870 1gb 149.99 free shipping
Newegg.com - SAPPHIRE 100259-1GL Radeon HD 4870 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFire Supported Video Card - Desktop Graphics / Video Cards (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102801)

Newegg.com - Hanns·G Hi-221DPB Black 22" 5ms Widescreen LCD Monitor 300 cd/m2 1000:1 Built in Speakers - LCD Monitors (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824254035)

im not using the speakers on the monitor so they dont really matter. all i can think of atm is the video card, i really dont want to bother with cooling besides the stock cooling so i cant get anything better or that gets hotter than the 4870. I might consider the 4850 if it can keep up with crysis at 1680 x 1050 resolution sinc ei nkow the 4870 can. I choose ati because i have always had nvidia, but if there are any nvidia suggestions then i can go with that too, i think its compatible with my mobo.processors right?

Newegg.com - SAPPHIRE Vapor-X Radeon HD 4870 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFire Supported Video Card - Desktop Graphics / Video Cards (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102825)

do i have to overclock it, or could i just install it, install the drivers, and not bother overclocking it.I'm just not sure if buying it and not overclocking it is worth the 10. From what i've been reading this card is good for overclocking due to it being cooler than the other 4870's. Since this card is only 10$ more, i figure i should just buy this since its cooler. Now i can just plug it in, install the drivers and leave it as is correct? If i want to i can also manually increase the fans to 40% at all times so it stays even cooler. any thoughts on this?

and should i buy artic silver 5 thermal compound paste? the processor/mobo combo doesnt specify if it comes with any, but im guessing it does.

Future240
07-01-2009, 05:42 AM
You are going the same thing I went through, all these GPU's to choose from. What I did is I went and read reviews about each card. I looked for card makers that had consistently good reviews. There is a reason the HIS 4870 is more expensive than the other 4870's. Not all GPu's run hot. Mine had such good cooling it lowered the temps on my case.

Cooling as I said before can depend on a lot of things. I am running a corsair 620 modular, an HIS Radeon 4850 4gbs of ram, A TB of HD space(three hd's) all of a mircro atx MB and my case(Acer AM5100) runs cool aS fuck on max power.
