View Full Version : Brake Questions

Here's the deal: I plan on upgrading my brakes on the '89 fastback to 300zx 26mm fronts and the q45 rears, (for ease of e-brake function). My questions is: What master cylinder should I run? The non-turbo Z one? The turbo Z?
Also, will there be any issues with running the 300zx/q45 combo, as far as brake bias is concerned?
Thanks,
Ben

just get the mastercyliner from a 90 NA.. it should be 1 and 1/16 in size...

Ease of e-brake function in what way? Y32 (Q45) e-brake = Z32 e-brake. Same drum setup and all.

AKA,
Really? I could have swore that I read somewhere that the q45 was not the drum set-up, and that the stock 240sx cable, etc, would work with it?
If this is not correct, then what rears should I run?
jdmrice,
Thanks for the m/c info! Now if I can just figure out the rear brake situation.

If you want to keep the stock-style e-brake, I don't think there even are any real rear upgrades.
The S14 Silvia K's used the 30mm Z32 style brakes up front and the same rear calipers as an S14 240SX... it's not an unbalanced setup. You might consider switching to the S14 rear calipers if you go this route, they use the same pads and rotors as the S13 rear calipers, but the piston is larger, which should correct the balance problems some people notice.
With this setup I'd go for a 15/16", or 1" M/C.. depending on what sort of pedal feel you prefer. 15/16" can come from a Z31 or an S12 with a VG30. 1" comes from later Z32s.

I imagine they would have modified/changed brake bias to compensate for the rather large difference between a USDM S14 single pot caliper and the JDM K's 4-pot...
I don't suppose there's any way for us to adjust brake bias on our stock MCs, is there?

AKA,
Thanks for the info once again! I think after researching all yesterday afternoon that I'm gonna go q45's front and rear. This is mainly due to the fact that my wheels are a 15x7 0 offset, and I don't wanna have to run a spacer, because they are already borderline on sticking out too much.
What m/c should I run with the q45's front and rear? (I'm not concerned about the e-brake set-up, (besides, aren't you working on that now,) but I wanna make sure I get the proper m/c. Would the 15/16th z31 work? If so, does it bolt right in, or am I gonna have to get something modded?
Thanks again,
Ben
