Decide what you use the car for most (street, drag, autocross, track, drift). Decide on a budget.
Then SEARCH... the merits of different limited slip types have been discussed here many times.
It doesn't matter that you have an automatic, the diffs are all the same.

your SOL
haha
you pay for quality.
you want agressive? VLSD IS NOT THE LSD!! VLSD sucks donkey dong. vlsd blows, espeically for drifting!!
aggressive? VLSD is as agressive as a snail.
get 2 way clutch lsd
req. oil change every 3K (cost 40 bucks each time for fluids)
rebuild after a few yeras or heavy use
noisy and kills tires
you want to be serious at drifting? you go balls out. imho.

ok then you are contradicting yourself
nismo is:
noisy
kills tires
very aggressive
requires FREQUENT oil change (every 3k)
it is a clutch 2 way LSD
also direct install is used LIGHTLY. it is NOT direct install. you need 2 new output shafts (135 EACH) or get the nismo kit (900+ dollars) you still need to shim and such to spec, and if you dont know how to do it (as one past board member did-used open diff shafts) you destroy the LSD.
professional install is HIGHLY suggested.
it is not VLSD. it is not friendly.

Isn't the r200 LSD from quaife a good option?? It is the most expensive but no need to rebuild ever or break it in. Lifetime warranty on it as well. And it's not as harsh as a 2-way clutch lsd. It sounds like just what your looking for but you're gonna pay alot up front. retails at like 1250$!! That's what I'm going with in my '97 and I've heard you don't need new flanges or anything to install it as long as you have an open diff to begin with.
And I second the notion on the VLSD sucking balls, it does.

quiafe (helical, iirc) is NOT good if he wants to drift
its how it transfers power
for drag or grip, QUAIFE rocks. go for it.
but drift..no no. you want equal power to both wheels CONSTANTLY.

i say, just start out with a VLSD first and if u like it then upgrade. thats what im doing. of coure ull be spending a lot more money but hey, if u dont like drifting then u just didnt waste a lot of money on a Nismo. but wth am i talkin about..u wanna do drifting and street racing [thumbs down], Note that i DO NOT have my VLSD installed yet, and im contempting whether i should already sell it and buy a Nismo SSS already. but i know nothing about drifting and if i go straight to SSS im afraid to mess it up. i can take out all my mistakes on the VLSD. even with its snail like engagement
but like dousan said..if ur serious go all out. i know dousan showed me the light. im gonna go all out. and get a nismo SSS, yes i will give up the comfortible of daily driving. but its an opportunity cost. one or the other. nice ride or killer on the track? and i decided to go with the track. and bare with the roughness on daily driving.
can u change the oil while the LSD is ON the car already?

Touche.....I forgot about that. I myself am more into the autocross events where the Quaife is ideal.

wait wait wait... you go out drifting?
i thought you had a 96 open diff automatic?
does this mean my car can drift too? o.O this is news to me~

its not HORRIBLY rough, but its far from stock. anyways. you'll love it. mine arrives May 6th in the USA (estimated date) and should have on car by end of may. expect to see a full writeup and maybe some video ;) :D
oil changing, yes you can do it when LSD is on car. its easy, just need a breaker bar and some eblow grease and paitience. pump too is easiest!!! :)

crap im past due to change mine. and I'm hoping I have enough redline left....how much does that silly thing take?
Dousan_PG
04-11-2003, 03:08 PM
about 2 quarts (iirc)
2 bottles of redline does it for me :) 90w140 is what i use right now...

:D Okay I'm being a dork.
Basically, you cannot get an LSD that is both aggressive and easy to maintain, unless you have craploads of money to buy a helical- (such as quaife) which still requires relatively frequent (though not as frequent as clutch type) fluid changes. Expect to pay over $1000 for the unit itslef!
Drift - you want 2 way clutch type.
Road Race (track) - Helical or clutch type 1.5 way
Daily driven slightly harder than most - VLSD
Granny where there's no snow/rain - open diff
Drag - 1way clutch type.

thats a HUUUUUGE snail!
granny, damn no wonder it too me so long to upgrade.
southern california..no snow to battle, tad bit of rain to worry about...all these are symtoms of OSD syndrome.

Sorry to hijack but who makes a mechanical 1.5 way lsd? I know the Nismo SSS is but are there any other companies that do?

Where can someone in SoCal buy a Nismo SSS? How is the maintenance on one? I am serious, if I make one investment, I might as well go for it.
[sits back and prepares for the flames]
when you say mechanical, I assume you mean helical... is that right? gear-type LSD is helical. Clutch type is... wel, clutch type. Nismo SSS is 1.5-way and 2-way adjustable (choose your way! ) clutch type, not helical.
I think helical LSDs are by definition 1.5 way, although someone may have to clarify that for me/you.

that thick huh? Im using Redline HD shockproof, but I only have one and a half bottles left! crap I hope the have some at the store. I had to specail order a case  whenI did my swap to have enough for the Tranny and the oil change in the diff. craps expensive. Hey dousan I saw that redline makes a posi additive, is that stuff usefull on clutch types at all?

YES it is VERY useful and makes it quieter too! :D
my friend uses MOPAR works great too (and cheaper? not sure)
the best way is to order a case. some friends and i are doing that...we use it so much and all have LSDs so might as well have it at once so when you get that late night urge to work on the car or change fluids, you can do it :D
i use 90w140 because lots of track use. 3 events in 3 weeks and heavy abuse on the car..good piece of mind! and no problems at all, feels great and runs well.

cool now what to do with the rest of this HD? lol off to find thicker gear oil. guess what I'll be doing tomorrow! hehe shes been making lots of noise lately, im overdue I know it shes not happy with me.
Probably 80% of LSD people are happy running 75w-90 or 80w-120 (?). 90w-140 is a little heavy, and fewer people run it for whatever reason (not sure). That is to say, if you can't find 90w-140, don't worry about it. :) It's not that important, I don't think, unless maybe you're running lonts of events like dousan where the Diff will see heavy, HEAVY use and much higher than normal temperatures.

hehe my car is likely to be thrashed at any given moment.. I'm pretty abusive with my car on a daily basis. but I do alot of highway driving too. (half hour commute too and from work) tires dont like me, i chirp second when Im taking it easy. I've done it with a cop next to me he looked at me funny I shrugged and mouthed "it always does that" too him. wasnt much he could say I accelerated from the light slower than he did and wasnt speeding. :)

yeah i use 90w140 because i drift often. also Mike (VRT) suggested it to me when i was asking him what would be best for heavy track use. he uses it on his nismo 2 way and no complaints.
its nice to have that extra protection. just this friday (coming) at the track so 20 mins non stop drifting (6 times in the day i hope) on the track its a good piece of mind :)

Another option is the S15 Helical LSD.. they go on ebay for about $150 all the time.. ($120 shipping though)
things to make it work:
1. S15 Output shafts
2. Custom spacers so that you don't have slack b/w the 12mm ring gear bolts and the lsd's 13 mm bolt holes.

my research shows that the new sentra se-r uses the r200 also. however will it wortk? it would be nice to have a readily available torsen in the states.

a FWD LSD will not work in a RWD car.
