Every time i shift i hear a *bump* noise and feel it too. Its like something in the in trunk hitting the back of my car. I have taken the car to a mechanic but they weren't sure what it was said something about the rear cross bar member or something is busted and said to fix the problem its going to cost me $900. I never trusted mechanics so has anyone else experienced this problem? thanks.

could be.

subframe shifting because of worn out bushings or the diff shifting as well. but id bet its dead bushings. and they arent the most fun thing to do on a car.

yeah most likely subframe bushings, jack up your car and take a look at them.

i think these threads go over similar issues:

i'm also having the same issue, i'm hoping that spl subframe bushing collars combined with the new rpsport subframe support brace would handle the issue.

O and another thing is the mechanic said something about the bushing being welded into the cross bar member and it would be impossible to replace just the bushings itself... i ono if he's serious or just bullshitting to make the job more expensive.

The bushings in question are in the rear subframe. I am not sure what you mean about cross bar member.

There are right ups for changing the subframe bushings. Basically drop subframe, burn out old bushings, replace with new, re-install subframe.

Or you could just go with the slotted inserts if you don't feel like changing the bushings.

The reason you are feeling and hearing this bump is because when you shift gears, torque is unapplied, then reapplied to the driveline. When it is reapplied, it jolts the drive line and that motion travels into the subframe, which then moves because of the worn out bushings.

edit** Just re-read your original post. Don't let anyone charge you $900 to change your bushings or subframe or whatever they want to do. It is pretty involved, but it isn't hard to do yourself.

If you have an s14 may aswell check the diff bushings aswell

To find out wich bushing it is ...while going down the road take the car out of gear and repeaditly press the brake , if you hear that same bump its the subframe bushings but if it only does it when you shift its the diff bushings
