when setting timing with piston 1 at TDC on compresion stroke...what does the compression stroke mean???

It means when both valves are closed and your spark plug is actually igniting the gases in your cyl.

Just put your 1st cyl at TDC, and make sure that the crank mark is at the second from the left.

thanks for the info...newbee question i know...just wanna make sure ive got it right...i havnt put on main pully yet but the crank mark matched chain link and the top notch on crank is at 12 o-clock
