torque spec on arp head bolts sr20

im going to rebuild my motor and use arp head studs and i was wondering if anybody knows what the torque specs would be and also does anyone have a link for the torque specs or helms of the sr20 det that would help out alot

also i will be replacing my headgasket and i want to know which head gasket do you guys think will work great and what size mm should i use
and is there anything else that you guys would recommend i change or replace since im gonna be in there. i want a reliable sr for dd. im kinda new to the scene so any help is appreciated thanx

I have never seen a problem with the Cometic Head Gaskets

But I use a Cosworth Gasket

ARP head studs @ 85flbs with the ARP lube

Stay away from Cometic on the SR. I have heard so many bad things about them having issues sealing and what not on the SR. Perhaps it's people not taking the correct preparation steps for it or what not.

Apexi, Cosworth, Search...

As for ARP's 4-steps to 80lbs... all to 20, then to 40 and so on.

Do not go cometic! Apex 1.1 will be fine. I dont kno how much experience you have with head gasket replacements but make sure ur engines timing is set back properly and label every thing.

In my opinion, Power Enterprise makes the best head gaskets - but Apexi/HKS/Tomei/Greddy all make good products. Since they're all about the same price, I say go for the best one, PE.

As far as stuff to watch out for, it's always nice to replace the intake and exhaust mani gaskets - especially the exhaust mani->head gasket with a 7-layer from Nissan. You should have a valve job done, replace the seals, set lash, and have the head milled a tiny bit to ensure that it's flat.

If the block's out of the car, consider having it milled a tiny bit also... otherwise, you'll have to settle with just scuffing the surface and praying for a good seal lol.

The new ARPs are shipping with instructions to torque to 105ft/lbs.

ARP tells you to go to 105 when you call them too, but half the time it'll break the stud.

We do 1/2in L19 studs to 110 so there was no way I was gonna do that, and 85 seems to work for everyone.

on my arp instruction said to torque to 80ft/lbs in 3 equal steps with arp lube and 85ft/lbs with motor oil.

I have a Tomei hg love it, as for the studs do steps of 20lbs each till 80... for the studs into the head, just tighten them by hand and the nuts tight to 80lbs... with the arp lube...

quick question when you guys say cosmetic...is that the factory one that comes in oem gasket kit???

Go with whatever instructions are included with the studs. Old ARPs were ~80, new ones are 105. The new ones are a harder metal, so to be stretched enough to hold properly, they need to be torqued higher. If you torque the older ARPs to that spec it will overstretch or break them.

McRussel, you've had the new ones break on you? Mine were fine at that, but it is a little scary pulling that hard on them. Were you using the ARP lube?

i never torqued a headstud on a sr to 105 - especially a arp - they arent preloaded into the block (see golden eagle ones or greddy/cosworth/tomei ones - they have a dogpoint end that loads it in the block).

Yeah pulling 100lb on anything that goes into aluminum is scary as shit, even if you go with the 1/2" ones.
