o.k., if the answer to this question is anything close to the following,
"your gonna need to pull the motor/upper oil pan/ oil pan etc" shoot me in the face with a shotgun.
jumped in my 95 auto obd1, crunk that bitch up. it started fine... for a sec. then it started banging like fuck and died. then i restarted it, and it would run as long as i had a foot on the gas. got pissed/sad/scared, and left. came back w/ some tools, took the valve cover off. not really on purpose, i had taken out the spark plugs, and when i turned the key, it was turning without any banging, plug the wires back in and it just bangs like hell and wont start. the timing chain is intact, its turning the cams. is it possible that the teeth jumped just from starting it? it has no issues in the past besides a broken timing chain guide last may that was promptly replaced. have had nothing wrong since i replaced it until today....
any ideas? its raining here so i would like to have suggestions before i stand in the rain staring at an engine bay.

can you have a friend (or yourself) locate where about the banging is coming from?
also what kind of banging? like metal on metal or misfire/detonation banging?
oh and i have a shotgun ready.

i would get the thing where you can work on it and first pull the chain and reset it on the cams and time it all.. then go from there.

does that fall under the "shoot me in the face with a shotgun" category?

Nah if the chain has the tensioner on it, there is probably no way it can jump with you cracking on it. So dun worry about that... You need to drain your oil and take off your oil filter and check for material or debris. Also get a new set of cheap spark plugs that fit your car and put everything back and crank your motor. Check for smell or any weird looking silver stuff on it....
Did you move your distributor cap or somehow changed your timing?

all i did was get in and turn the key. be more specific about smells and silver stuff. on the plugs or in the filter? what type of smell?

On the plugs, if you look closely, there could be silver stuff like very tiny specs of silver, that means something is contacting something in your combustion chamber. You should look at your old ones and maybe see if there is anything crazy going on.... But drain your oil and check.... See if the oil smells like gas or any other smell other than oil....
Check your timing just in case....

Crank the motor like you are trying to start it and unplug one wire at a time, when the noise goes away, you've found the faulty cyl.

ok, ill check that out. just a couple of things.
1. if the timing chain is broke, the upper chain will not turn. correct?
2. it only makes the racket when spark is put to the cylinders. also, how bad would the car be bucking due to say a fouled plug or two?
3. there is no fluids coming out anywhere
is there a consensus that if the guides/ tensioners are intact, it is highly unlikely that the chain jumped teeth?
how do you check the timing without running the engine or tearing everything out?
