I just ordered my first set of 595s for and event last week and had a bit of an issue with my 595s, I only did three runs with them and by the end of three runs there where chunks missing from everywhere, I have an NA KA and cant really understand why they were chunking so bad. I kept my rear tire pressure at 38 before going out and when I was finished with a run they would be between 43-44. Anyone have any idea or input on why they were chunking so bad? by the way my alignment in the rear is 0 camber and .05 toe in, if that matters

Were they 17" or 18"?

From what I've heard, Federals need cool down time, if you don't cool them down they chunk real bad, real quick.

yeah feds are bithc tires
gotta heat cycle them first
i do like 2 laps chill out for a while
do 2 more chill out
and then rest of day they rae fine

i had the most problems with 245 18

i did 265 18 and they didnt chunk at all

They are actually 195/50/15's on a 15X8, so dousan you say to slide or a grip two sets of laps with cooling in between? and after two sets they should be fine to go out as much as you want?

with 17s, I NEVER had a problem.
I hear that with 18s, people star having problems.

...I have 18s now. :(

Federals don't like high pressures either. I run mine at less than 36psi hot, do a heat cycle lap, let them cool and your good to go.

245/40/18's love to chunk. 235/40/17's don't chunk as easily.

I think it's because the 245s were too "small" for your power levels Dousan.

By too small, I mean like, there's not enough rubber there to keep the rubber at a decent heat level, and they get too hot, thus chunking like a mofo.

Once you threw the 265s on there, there's more rubber and the tires are now handling the heat better, and so no problems.

At least that's my theory.

PS - anyone have input on 235/40/18 Federals 595s?

run them reverse tread, seems to keep them from chunking

I ran my 235/40/17's for two and a half events this way.

How much grip do you lose in doing this?

235/40/18's like to chunk too if you don't take care of them right. I've been hearing good things about the 255's and 265's though.

I used to run the 235/40/17 595ss. Good tire for drifting.
Just like others have mentioned, I've heard bad things about fed 18's tires being shit.

On the other hand, right now, I run the WanLi tires. Its a lot cheaper. And hold up better than 595ss.

At the SoCal drift round 2, the 1st place winner was using WanLi 17" tires.

Wanli last about the same as Nexens but don't grip well.

Feds grip well, but in 18's they chunk like a mofo.

Some of the JD guys go with 255/35R18 and have no chunking issues.

I have chunking issues all day at 235/40R18 and also 245/40R18. I don't heat cycle them because I just want to keep on running and that's my fault.

I just cut off the chunked part of the thread and keep running on them till that blow.

That works too. I don't recommend it, but whatever.

have you tried the WanLi's?
Personally, I did try both 595ss and the Wanlis, they are about the same, IMO, I actually prefer the Wanli, cuz do give slight better performance.

Nexen is shit for grip, lets not even get started on that. And its more expensive than the Federals. Bad choice for tires if looking for grip.

wanlis are pretty legit, they grip well and are comparable tires to the 595ss. nexens are lame, they dont grip for shit.
