View Full Version : I have smoke inside my car

Hey guys. My '91 240 started smoking inside. Its very faint smoke that can only be seen with the windows up and the sunroof open a tad. It comes out around the shifter somewhere. I heard something about something dirpping on the exhaust and vaporizing? I took it to a mechanic i know and he was clueless. Even after putting it up on a lift and walking under it?  Any ideas?

Hey.  It sounds like hydraulic clutch fluid dripping on the exhaust pipe.  You can check that yourself by jacking the car up, and the grey exhaust pipe should have a brownish splatter on it.  It happened in my old corvette, and a softline (rubber hydraulic hose) had some cracks in it.

I had a head gasket problem on an old volvo many years back.  It began to drip onto the exhaust pipe.  Didn't seem like a big problem, until one day there was so much smoke, it looked like I was doing a burnout in a Top Fuel dragster.  Get it fixed.

i get the same thing in my 95 240, same smoke coming from the gearbox with the sunroof cracked.... if you get it fixed, can you let me know what it is and how much it costs?

dude all i can say is stop tokkin up in the car... lol j/k
yea its most likely a hydraulic leak, happened to my friends rustang...
or maybe even an oil leak, cause that happened to my other friend, his main seals in the front were shot, and all the oil kept baking on the exhaust pipe, smells like shit... those are the only 2 things i can come up with also... good luck my friend <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=';)'>

Take out your shift knob and boot, check the outer and inner rubber boot by remove the boot plate inside. I have the same problem as you because the inner boot was cracked. And that makes the transmission fuild vaporize when it is hot, , so you see the smoke. You can get the boot from dealer like around $20, and it should fixed your problem.
