View Full Version : Popping speakers after bypassing factory S14 amps WTF!?

What's up guys! After owning my car for 10 years I've finally decided to bypass the factory amps. I've been living with the problem of the front and rear speakers deciding when they want to work for long enough! So yesterday with the help of the FAQ section and using the search feature afterwards, I was able to bypass the factory amps with four wires left. The two blue acc wires and the two green/red onn/off wires. I left these wires disconnected. Turned on the head unit and it was a success! Only thing is now my speakers are popping if I use too much volume but here is something weirder... if use the fader control so that I have equal power going to the front and rear speakers, I hear popping from all speakers (front, tweets, rear) if the volume is anything over 10 of 30. If I fade it so that it is all rear speakers, I hear popping from the rears. If I fade it so that it is all front speakers, no popping at all! Even at max volume! WTF?!

My speakers never had popped before bypassing the factory amps so I don't think they are dead. Only real problem I had with them were that the front and rear speakers would have a mind of their own and chose when and when not to work. This is the reason why we all bypass the factory amps right? I triple checked my bypass work and I'm sure that I've done everything right according to this:

http://zilvia.net/f/archive-faqs/10025-bypassing-factory-amps.html

and searched to see if anyone had my problem after bypassing their factory amp. Nothing.

The head unit is a Pioneer DEH-P8000R MOSFET 45wx4 (10 years old but still works!) and the speakers are Pioneers all around. I haven't checked the wiring behind the head unit yet but plan to today and wanted to see what everyone else thought it could be. Thanks in advance guys and sorry for the book of a post!

Popping to me usually meant something is touching the chassis and grounding out.

Thanks man... looks like I'll have to check behind the deck and check all the speaker wires

Bad ground or bare wire rubbing somewhere. Make sure you taped off the wires you snipped with some electrical tape.

Bad ground in general or for the head unit? I just did the home made grounding kit but didn't take an Ohm meter to it... will have to do that. I used heat shrink wire crimps on the wires I spliced but just left the remaining 4 wires dangling so I'll put some electrical tape on them and see what happens. Thanks for the heads up

Are the speakers blown? You'd hear noise from them if they were, similar to the sound of a grounded lead. Plus, a high power radio *should* cut out completely if a lead is grounded anyway.

yup definitely sounds like a short somewhere, double check your wiring and make sure none of it is touching the chassis or any of the other wiring.

did you solder the connections or crimp? a weak connection might cause this also.

yes I crimped.... looks like time to solder upside down

Soldered the bypass work and now managed to disable the driverside rear speaker.... f my life... gotta re do that connection. Speakers still poppin though. Would anybody know if the rear speakers are bad would it make the front speakers sound bad too? Beacause the popping only happens when I use the rear speakers but if I fade the control to use just front the popping disappears from the front.

Why don't you try this, swap the rear/front speakers.
Just to test, not install.
If the rear speakers continue to pop in the front and the front speakers sound clear in the rear, you have bad speakers.
But if you find the rear speakers, now in front, sound clear,
you have another problem, radio/wires etc..
