Hey I'm a 240 newb. So humor me. Is it possible to drop a 300zx engine (either turbo or n/a) into a s14? If so... which one would be easier and howmuch would it cost? Thanx.

Anything is possible with $$$$$$$$ and time.

I suggest using the search...

But I'll save you a bunch of time and say that if you're new to cars in any way shape or form it's probably not a good idea to attempt this sort of engine swap.

Im a newb too. The best swap you can do for the best bang for the buck is a s-13 sr20det. I wanna save for a 214.

for the $$$ you spend on the 300zx conversion you could turbo the KA or get an SR and many extras too. Why 300zx motor? If you want that motor you could sell the 240sx and buy a 300zx turbo for 8-10k or N/A for 5-7k.

If you really want to swap in a 300zx motor check out http://www.unstable-hybrids.com/

But I would recommend doing an RB2x Inline6 swap WAAAY b4 I would try to do a VG. The RB swap is somthing that quite a few people have done, and I don't believe it's as much of a pain in the ass...at least that's the impression that I've gotten...

. . .Don't be so harsh guys. Woulda been nice if he searched first, but :P

It's not a commonly done swap so nobody will be able to spit out numbers for you. Regardless, you're looking at the motor (I've seen typically ~2k for it) plus custom pieces (I'd imagine motor mount, driveshaft, nuts and bolts), labor, and "oh ****" items. Can't give you any guess on what any of those aside from the motor will run :P

Needless to say, it's a very custom job. If you aren't looking at doing the labor yourself, you would be MUCH better off asking your local shop what they would charge rather than us. If you think you can do the labor yourself, you may be able to do it for under two or three grand, but that assumes you really know your ****.

It's a possible swap, it's been done once or twice in the past, just very uncommon.

It's possible and both of them would be a bitch to install and cost ALOT.

The engine itself is expensive to take care of.

eh.....go with the RB.....

edit: BTW.....I'm being sarcastic and just kidding on the RB comment

it should be possible to fit in with a lot of custom work. as far as i know, noone has done it before on an s14. heinekenns is actually going to do this swap, as he already has the vg30 in his possession. you could contact him if you really wanna know more about this.

(I've seen typically ~2k for it) Hmm, yes, but I also see around $1000-1500, for the VG30DETT. If you went with the VG30ET, you're talking $100-300.

But I would recommend doing an RB2x Inline6 swap WAAAY b4 I would try to do a VG. Yeah, JDM. ???

I don't see that coming anywhere near the cost of a KA or SR. Why not a 300zx? Weight, handling.

The engine itself is expensive to take care of. Not true...labor is expensive, if you've ever looked in the engine bay you know why.

eh.....go with the RB..... This following your first comment is rather contradicting. Which do you think is going to be expensive to repair?

I think your goals are what is important here...
if you want 500 hp and an engine you can get parts for from autozone, the vg30 might start to make sense, especially if you already had one and could part with your car for a while.

If you want less than 500 hp, then it would probably be easier to do an sr20det stroker.

If you want more than 500 or 600 HP the RB26dett is going to be your best bet, but that takes the rb25 det tranny, and at that power level you are probably gonna need a new, stronger gearset. Its going to be expensive as hell for the engine, the fabrication, the performance aftermarket parts (all have to be imported and the support isn't there like it is for the sr20), and you can't get new parts from your auto store.

Any of them would be an awesome swap!

However, look around at some of the KA24DE turbo swaps a few of the guys have here on zilvia.. a few of them are making an awful lot of power, and if you have an healthy ka24de, that option would start to make a lot more sense.
Its not as exotic as a jdm swap, but its street legal and parts would be easier to find.

I didn't mention the many other swaps I've seen, RB20det, RB25det... they fall in between the sr20 and the rb26det, as in parts are gonna be hard to find, and with the smaller engine power might be hard to make.

For the record, I have seen a few silvia's with the vg30dett fairlady engine, but I don't have links to them, it was a while ago and I saw one online. I think it was an s13 coupe though.

For the amount of work its gonna take to drop the vg30dett hell you might want to look into other engines too, j2zgte, 20b, f20c??? who knows.

300zx engines are a pile of sh*t. If you've owned one and haven't blown it you haven't driven it hard enough!:) :)

What??? I know people with VGs that have over 200K on them the VG is a strong motor that can handle a lot of boost. A VG30ET can handle 14 psi on stock internals and with 8 psi people are getting approx. 250 hp out of them. That's a pretty good hp gain for only 4 psi over stock. The only downside to these the VG30 is the fact that its a V6 and if you upgrade anything you almost always have to get 2 of everything.
