I'm already an At&t customer, current I have Sony Ericsson and going to get an Iphone soon.

The question is, if I just buy a Iphone without the contract is it ok to plug the sim card (At&t) I have into Iphone and use all the function such as texting, calls, and browse through internet with 3g.

Also, I just got a very good deal on a Itouch (2nd Gen with 16 Gb for $200, barely use)

Should I buy the Itouch or the Iphone?

My cousin did this. He had a LG Shine with unlimited text and data usage, and bought an unlocked iPhone. He just
put in his SIM card and it worked fine. The bill was the same.

you should wait until the next iphone comes out

which is during the summer.. hold out a little longer

anyways

yes it will work as long as you have the data plan with at&t

otherwise make sure you get a data block because the iphone uses data silently in the background and can rack up some serious charges

If your current AT&T has a data plan you'll be fine by swapping sims to the iPhone.

That's what I did. I had originally bought a Blackjack w/data then later bought an iPhone 3G off craigslist for cheap and just switched sims. I just don't get 3G all the time when browsing...

No problem

LOL If you don't have a data plan you will get a bunch of charges. You do not have to call them and tell them you have an Iphone you just need to let them know you want a Data plan.

You just love scaring people don't you? LOL

If I were you, I'd keep what you already have.
I have the the i-phone 3g myself.

Appeal of the i-phone imo, really is in all the fun apps and integrating the phone into a fun Mp-3 player.
As an actual phone, it sucks.
Reception is bad.
Phone reception is terrible for the i-phone for here in Los Angeles.
Even worse than my prior Sony Ericsson/Nokia/Dingleberry phones w/ AT&T/Cingular.
My calls get dropped a lot (doesn't help that I live in the hills), and noise intereference is severe.
texting is not that great (relative to a QWERTY and/or regular blackberry-esque phone).
Actually, as a music player, the i-phone (& the i-touch/i-pod) suck too given the limited compressed audio formats they can use, but thats another can of worms.

The i-touch pretty much has all the desirable functions that the I-phone has.
Also, If you're going to get an i-phone, it would pretty much render the i-touch as a redundant device.

To me, the a good combo would be to have a good blackberry or QWERTY phone & an i-touch as a media device.
It would be kinda bulky to carry all that around, but it would be great.
that's what I would have done if I had to do things all over again.
To be honest, though, the apps on the i-phone are something I could do without.

That has nothing to do with the phone its the service, i have my iphone unlocked on tmobile and i get service everywhere in LA where as my friend with a legit iphone from att does not get signal i get full bars=]
And why are people hating on the iphones keyboard so bad i cant type faster on my iphone then on any other phone that ive owned including sidekick 3 with a keyboard THE IPHONE OWNS!

Typing on the iPhone also depends on if you have a grip/case around it, as that changes the way your fingers
are wrapped around the phone, and makes it easier to type with.

The damn thing's like a bar of soap without any sort of case on it, I think they designed it that way so you'd drop it and have to buy more iPhones. I have a cheap rubber sheath (lawl) and it works great.

Love the phone though. No reception problems.

Can you confirm this is the case? OS 3.0 is coming out this summer and I've heard vague rumors of new hardware, but nothing even remotely concrete or reliable.

whyrun?

i did what the OP was asking. just switch in the sim. yes it works. if you dont want data, call them and tell them to block it. dont tell them you have a iphone though, they will make you pay for it.

as far as the phone, i have two problems with it.

1. hearing on it sucks. as loud as it goes and you still have a hard time.
2. speakerphone sucks.
3. it sometimes just exits out of progs on its own. (think it needs to be restored. i have a unlocked one. )

yes i can confirm this

apple already put in the order with the companies for a couple millions in parts for the new iphone

they usually wait until 1-2 months before they're going to release it to order parts

it will be released this summer or in september

About the phone reception, there are a couple of factors to consider.
I did mention that I had AT&T prior.
I used several other phones with AT&T.
They all had considerably better reception & less dropped calls.
Maybe the reception quality differs drastically depending on area.
where I use the phone, (west la, sfv, dowtown la, azusa, etc), it's clearly not that great.

about the i-phone keyboard, i guess it either works for you well or not so well.
I can only attest that for myself, that it's 'ok', but not optimal.
I prefer typing on a QWERTY setup.
It's more a matter of personal preference, rather than one device being superior over another.

Since everyone isn't even commenting on the situation at hand...

It won't work unless you unlock the phone or get an iphone account/plan.

Looks like people have been commenting on it. You don't need the iPhone plan for it to work, if he already
has the data plan active on his account.

QWERTY?

arguing for the sake of arguing?

it's still a touchscreen setup.
different from a conventional button based QWERTY setup.

as i said, it's a matter of preference.

unlock it and you're good to go with or without data plan.

if you currently have an iphone with the data plan, unlock it and cancel the data plan for cheaper monthly bills, but you will only get internet where there is wifi (obviously).

really though, i really dont get these fancy new phones and shit, i got my gf one, she loves it but i cant figure that shit out for shit.

None of you guys have actually done this, have you?

I swapped SIMs back and forth between my Blackberry Curve (signed on my personal account, with unlim everything) and my 3G Iphone (signed on my biz account, with unlim everything), and although most of the services work, VISUAL VOICEMAIL DOES NOT.

Also, AT&T sends me emails every week or so telling me that I need to call them and swap shit to get all my features to work. Bill has not changed.

Get bigger pants

Nobody likes guys in skin tight ass pants..

Also, the keyboard takes some getting used to. Let the auto correct do it's job, it's pretty good.

Like what people has said it will work. I'm using a unlocked iPhone and my friend has a reg iPhone. I don't know why but I think my iPhone is better it doesn't lag like his and it out performs his. Don't get the g1, my sister has one and she is regreting it.

last two posts are unbelievably retarded

i had a 3g iphone for a total of two weeks and then sold it

i got it right when the 3g unlock came out on new years and turned around and sold it for a lot more than i paid

things i did do with it while i had it

unlocked and jailbreaked, called at&t canceled data plan (have to know how to do this too) but continued to use the iphone, and got all the apps from itunes for free (very illegal lol don't ask me how to do it)

still even with all that jazz i got rid of it

all i need to do is make calls and text and not have to worry about a phone if i drop it
