View Full Version : Killing that speed limiter...

QOUTE: (user: orange-grey) It involved disconnecting the 5th gear sensor on the trans and cutting a yellow ECU wire with a green stripe and two silver dots every inch or so....

Thats the text every one recognizes on killing the speedo limiter. Now I have done the 'green stripe wire cut', as well as putting a kill switch on it, but I'm alittle weary of doing the tranny sensor. First if I kill the sensor is my RPM meter going to work in 5th? ...if not then I can just wire up a kill switch on it so that it's only 'disconnected' when I want it to be, but I'm not sure of which wire to splice into.

I'm asking about this now because I'm about ready to change my tranny oil, and I figure while I'm under there I might as well see about the sensor as well.

As usual, any help you guys can throw my way would be great.

The 5th gear sensor just reports to the ECU that the car is in 5th to activate the speed limiter. It has no other function. Don't worry about disconnecting it.

hey I've been wondering this for a while... my car hits the speed limiter hard in 4th and 5th, but I have a sohc ka24e, and I haven't seen any info on how to get rid of the rev limiter. Is it the same as for the later dohc cars?

In the SOHC, you're not hitting the speed limiter in 4th, you're hitting the rev limiter! The way the stock electronics are calibrated, the rev limiter in 4th comes on at exactly 112mph. It's the same rev limiter as 1st, 2nd, and 3rd.

The procedure for removing the top speed limiter should be the same, but unlike the DOHC you're not going to get any extra range out of 4th gear from it.

i duno man, i have a 93' and i DEFINATLY hit my speed limiter in 4th.. no rev limiting there. it goes all the way to 120+ and then that annoying BRRRRUUUUUUUHHHHH kicks in, exactly the same as in 5th when i do ~123mph

id be very interested on knowing how to actually remove it as i ALWAYS hit it on 495 atleast 4 or 5 times every time i drive to MD. =[

YOU HAVE A '93!

I was talking about the SOHC ONLY. The DOHC has 4th and 5th gear sensors and the limiter works in both 4th and 5th thanks to the higher redline. The SOHC has only a 5th gear sensor.

I have a 1990 240sx HB with the new APEXI REV/Speed meter. I've taken it off but have not driven past 100mph... havn't had time.

no, mine doesn't hit the rev limiter in 4th, its not even close.
It hits the speed limiter.

he said it hits the rev limiter in 4th at 112 mph. it doesnt matter where ur rpms are u just can go past 112 in 4th.

he said its the same rev limiter as 1-3rd gear its lower in 4th.

So you're saying that if I do disconnect the transmission sensors (and yellow wire), the only thing that will happen will my speed and rev limiter will be removed? My RPMs will still show up on my tach? There's NO other drawbacks?
