View Full Version : Rolling Odometer (forward not backward)

Ok, here's the deal. I'm thinking I want to swap the guage cluster from my new front clip to my car, and the odometer reading is going to be wrong when I do. What I need to know, is if it's possible to (legally) roll forward the odometer until it's at the exact number that mine is now. Anyone know anything about this? My major priority is staying legal (besides the obvious illegal motor swap), so if I can't do it that way then I need some other options, but i'm going to need that 9000 RPM tachometer from the new gauge cluster if nothing else. Thanks in advance

Better to just swap the 9k tach into your old cluster, keeping your original odometer and reading.
The JDM odometer reads in kilometers.

I was going to do that....forget it. Dude, the little gear that attaches to the odometer makes the numbers go up soooo slowly. But if you want, it's pretty simple to just take it all apart and find out for yourself. I tried rolling it forward with a drill...at 900 rpm it took 15 minutes to click off 5000 miles. Blah.

What milage do you need? I have an extra gauge cluster with 78,000 miles on it but the speedo doesn't work. I could try to find you a working one close to your milage though if you want (and the speedo would be in miles not kilometers)

Well, my mileage right now is about 126K. So you think it would be easier to just get the tach swapped? I can live with the 110 speedo I guess.

I know a clock doc who will set the odometer at what ever you want for a small fee. You would have to ship the cluster to him. e-mail for more info.

i'm in a simular situation, i have the odo. sitting there, i did about 100 miles forward by hand and it took me like and hour! did the math, i'd have to do that non stop for 250 days to add the mileage i needed, ha... i'm gunna try a drill or power screwdriver. :o

Sweet, that sounds like the right way to go. What about the legality of it though? Do I have to go to the DMV and let them know that I did this? I wanna be totally up and up.

You have an S14. It could be totally different.
But in my S13, I took it all apart, and took out one of the gears that goes from the speedo to the odometer. I put that in the drill (it has a shaft on the gear) and touched it to the gear that actuall moves the odometer. If you take it apart, you'll see what I mean. It's all common sense, really, once you have all the pieces in front of you.

Why don't you swap both tach and speedometer... It's pretty easy. I did it with mine. :)

do you guys get your needles recalibrated after doing all this? or are you guys close enough? how would the gear attch to the drill? thru a socket? a bit?? ...
I want to swap cluster styles so just putting in gauges would be out of the question.

You don't need to use a drill, the numbers can be advanced individually. It's a little tricky, but possible.

they are linked together with little pins. if you know how to take them apart, you are a odo-hack.
