Probly a noob question, but I've seen a lot of conflicting info on this.
Is there a USDM counterpart for the S13 Silvia 5-spd trans? Will a 240sx unit work? What are the differences?

I have heard that too, but is a 240 trans the same trans? Will it turn a silvia driveshaft?

the KA and SR tranny are two peice trannys......once you have swapped the bell housing they will match up directly....both the S13/S14 SR tranny will work with the KA(USDM 240SX) driveshaft.....but the S15 tranny requires the front driveshaft from a S15....the S15 has different splines that the S13/S14 SR

So you can use a KA tranny with a S13/14 SR?

Yes.
Is the JDM SR tranny better than the USDM cause I'm not happy with mine or are they exactly the same

I believe that the silvia tranny has double synchomesh also.
Ok if it does have double synchromesh does that mean that shifting will be much smoother everytime my gear grinds I remeber my freinds VR4 ahhh that was a sweet tranny

No the gear ratios are the same. CA18 has different gear ratios though.
Kind of weird actually, the USDM 240sx had silvia/180sx gear ratios before the silvia/180sx got them.

ratios are the same EXCEPT 5th gear (uiuc will correct me cuz he's a nerd like that) but the KA is like .752 and the SR is like .856
different front bellhousings as said before but both work quite well

The transmission core's or gear sets are the same. Now whether or not the transmission housings, when you start to swap them in and out will match up I can't say. With mine I had to keep the entire housing to get things to work. Otherwise I'd have to make some changes to my driveshaft. But there are differences in the gears. Both SR and CA from what I have learned are different from the KA transmissions. The differences come into play in the top end or final gears. After changing out my CA transmission core, I haven't been too happy with the KA gear set I am using. I am in the process of acuiring the CA gears and bearings I need to rebuild my original gear set. Back to the subject though, the main differences are in the final gears. As far as mounting, changing out the bell housings should work.

if you swap the bellhousings it will fit
IIRC the first three gears on SR trans have double synchros
i am not aware of any other i don't know gear ratios so i am not saying for sure on that
