I am trying to fix the A/C in my girlfriend's truck. There is a crack in the metal end of the low pressure line. The issue is that I am unsure the name of this piece or if if it can be replaced without replacing the whole line Believe me I have searched

It can be welded if the crack is small, otherwise you have to replace the entire line or have a new line made by a competent A/C shop.

would a simple tack weld work?

Not if the crack is through the line. It will leak.

It is aluminum so you'll want to have it tig welded anyways to get a good seal. That would be cheaper than replacing the line itself, but an AC shop could probably do it fairly cheap especially for a simple maintenance item. Or find the line online, order it, and install it. Charge it yourself or bring it to a shop. Not too big of a deal.
