Sounds like the inner valve cover gasket died. Replace and try again. Make sure you get BOTH the gaskets for the valve cover from wherever. One is the cover, and the other rings around the spark plugs.

does it sound like a blown head gasket

Nope... Were you doing something that could lead to the headgasket blowing? Drain your oil. If it's milky, you blew a headgasket. If not, it's the center valve-cover gasket.

all right, took the valve cover off, all the plugs are out, looking down the plug shaft nothing but oil, seals around valve cover, outer and the inner on the spark plug shafts are ok, go deeper?

doesn't really look like too much off a gasket, just like a rubber, circular, seal

a blown head gasket does not make oil go into the sparkplug hole. The only thing that does is a blown valve cover gasket. If you think you have a blown headgasket do a leak-down or compression test, that's how you know. Jeff's test works too, but you can have a BHG without having coolant in your oil. Another test is to see if you have white smoke coming out of your exhaust.

yea if you are you just talking about the hole above the spark plugs then no biggie its a valve cover gasket plug ring not sealing. if its on the other end of the spark plugs where the tip is then you have problems. if thats the case then headgasket, valve guides, and rings are the first suspects...
