View Full Version : reusing piston rings?

I blew piston 2&3 in my SR but 1&4 are fine. Do you think it will be fine for me to reuse the piston rings with new OEM pistons since I am going to be running all stock? Because I am on a budget.
lmk what you think.

Why would you do that?
Honestly.
Think about it.

Is reusing pistons ok?

If the pistons are with in spec, I'd reuse them. As far as the rings, the question is since you blew 2 & 3, I dont think 1 & 4 is that far behind. You were probably knocking hard so im willing to bet your rod bearings are done too. You might as well do a full rebuild or else, you'll probably end up doing it again.
Full rebuild: Fresh piston rings, new rod bearings, main bearings, machine crank, re-hone block, new headgasket. This is the right way of doing it.
Youre cheaper option would be, get another engine block or a good bottom end.

go new or go home! if you are gonna replace something internal go new for everything i learned the hard way

yup learn from ppl that have already been through it, wouldnt doubt your other pistons are far behind and if your on a budget hold of a little save money and get a full rebuild it will save you in the long run

If you blew something in the motor, chances are the cylinders will need a slight over bore - to 86.5mm more than likely.
The stock bottom end has a tendency to be problematic with ring lands on the pistons.
If i can help you figure it out, let me know.

DONT MACHINE THE CRANK! if you dont have to. If its not scored or warped then leave it be and get new oem berings from nissan. If you turn the crank there will no longer be a "special" coating on it.

WAT?
They're just micro polished, there's no special coating....
There's a lot of shitty responses in here.
HOWEVER, "IF" you plan on keeping the car for awhile and want to put some miles on it without taking the engine back out again do all rings and you CAN just replace the pistons that are damaged.
But if you have 2 damaged pistons already I'm sure the other 2 aren't that far behind. As a rule of thumb, when you take out pistons the rings should automatically be replaced if you want to drive the vehicle for awhile. New rings automatically means you also need to put a fresh hone in the bores for the new rings to seat. New rings need to be gapped.
Also don't forget these engines are small liter high output. They need the attention to detail to go another lap.
Honestly, no offense, but it sounds like you shouldn't be digging into the engine just by posting these questions. You'll save time and money just getting a new longblock and parting your engine out.

True jakerps13, that I should not be messing around with the engine but I want to learn and I am not about to spend $1000 + for labor on the engine at a machine shop.

I wasnt trying to give a shitty response, I had special in"" because that is what i hear people call it all the time. Getting the oem quality of honing probably isnt going to happen and if the berings did not spin there is usually 0 reason to turn it or replace it.
I think its safe to say our shop has probably built lots more nissan engines than the people in this thread put together. I was just adding my $0.02 from my professional opinion.

why would you want to re use your piston rings after 2&3 have already gone. just suck it and do a full oem rebuild thats the only way to do it.

and dont cheap out on reusing the headgasket. hhahaha

vouch, dont get cheap in the wrong places
if u wanna cut cost, dont degrease stuff, no paint, no lunch.
never say no to new piston rings!

True, you don't want cheap stuff in the wrong place. I just ordered some brand new pistons and a rings set. I am going to get the cylinders honed sometime this week.

If you dont have the engine disassembled yet, i would hold off on ordering pistons until
you can verify that the cylinders do not need an overbore.
More times than not in the SR motors if they "blow" a piston per say, there will more than likely be scarring on the cylinder walls.
Rather easy to clean up with a 020 over bore to 86.5mm.
Let me know if you need any help with rebuild info/parts.
Thanks,
Robert

True, I just got some new piston rings and put them on. It's in the block now.
