Can someone clarify this for me? (KA24DE)

I had a pretty interesting conversation with my dad (a certified machinist) about this. The topic popped up when he asked me what size pistons I was going to replace the stock ones with. "Im goin with .020 over" I told him. I also said that I will take the block to a machine shop and get it bored and honed to the tolerances specified by the FSM. He didn't agree with my decision because he says that "I do not know how much material the stock pistons removed from wear and tear on the cyliner walls"

So the question is...approximately how much material can a stock piston remove from a cylinder wall after 175k miles has been put on the engine? Given the engine never overheated and had it's oil replaced every 3k miles.

Im stomped now....because I want to take my block in next week to have it worked on....

Was buying .020 over pistons before boring and honing a bad idea?

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

what i would do i would measure each cylinder wall just to have a idea and go from there. I don't think a good running engine would have such an extreme engine wear that it would be a bad idea to go .20. Ether way a good machine shop would measure and make sure its ok to do .20 just let them know what size piston your using and im pretty sure they would let you know if you need to go bigger.

you need to take it to a machine shop so they can Mic the cylinders, over time the cylinder wall be come uneven such as / \ or \ / so you need to bore them out to straight to get them | | a machine shop will tell you how much they need to bore to get the wall straight again so then you can order the pistions accordingly

when they tell you which size pistons you should order, buy the psitons and bring the block and the pistons to the Machine shop so they can bore and hone the cylinder to the closet tolerance of the pistons for the best seal
