View Full Version : Pillar gauge pod mounting... how'd u do yours?

I spent the past few hours wiring my car and running lines for my gauges this evening. i have an dual gauge pillar mount pod from autometer (rice yeah yeah). Anyways, the only thing i have left to do is mount the actual pod to the pillar.
My question is:
How did you stick it there?
The obvious answer was screws, but I want it to look nice and neat, professional even, with no exposed screws. I thought maybe doublesided tape, but the gauges are heavier than you'd expect. I have several ideals, but I can only choose one... if I don't like it, it means buying a new pod (screw that).
Suggestions?

Mine came with black pop-rivet things. Plastic, has a post with plastic fins comming off it. I don't think it looks that bad.

flat black push pins. it held 2 guages before. the pos is long gone now. but yeah black push pins on the 4 corners and if you dont want to use it anymore you can barely see the small holes. use double side tape with it and its pretty strong.

What about button head allen screws with the black oxide finish? The key is also making sure that the screws are neatly and symmetrically placed.

I haven't put mine on yet so I don't know....but I thought it just kinda gripped on there...held on by tension or something...either that or some mysterious mystical force *~*~*~*~
OK, after looking I discovered that both of my assumptions were wrong - how surprising...

I don't really now how you'd attach it without anything showing. Couldn't you just bondo it or something? I saw one page where a guy tried to do it....I personaly think that it looked like crap though.

I never correctly installed mine, but couldn't you use a heat gun to mold the pillar in place better? I'm thinking some glue or epoxy could be your friend also. Either way I feel ya on that double sided tape, it doesn't hold up anything :(

Thanks for the responses so far guys, I've gotten some good ideas from them...
I came to the conclusion that Summit jacked me up with this pod. I got the trademark yellow autometer box with the gauge pod inside and thats it. No hardware, none of these plastic push pin things everyone seems to talk about (including the tutorial, thanks Sil80girlie!), no instructions, NOTHING.
Rat Bastages.
I think the best idea so far is the black oxide allen screws (props AllMotorKA), combined with servo tape (like double sided tape but WAY stickier and doesn't shred like foam doublestick tape).
I'll get some pix when i'm done, but keep the suggestions coming if you think of something else! Thanks everyone!

What guages are you gonna put in it? I have a boost and oil pressure. Reason I ask if you had an oil pressure gauge what did you put the sending unit into?

Sorry guy, I haven't done the oil pressure thing yet, I only have boost and A/F so far. If you figure it out tho, let me know, cuz I'll be getting addition gauges in the next month or 2, EGT, oil pressure and fuel pressure.

Thanks anyways. That is my project for this weekend.
By the way to answer your question I have the Black rivet things too. Looks very clean.

After spending entirely too long figuring out wire lengths and such, I got my gauges in, here's how they look. Can't wait til I have the $ to ditch my autometers and get Blitz BL gauges :D

Thats an Autometer dual gauge pod for a s13 240sx. Direct fit from Jegs.com online, and other places, but you'll usually have to call them.
Anyway.. here's what I have Yoshi. I know it's a little late. I had to get replacement pop-rivets, and got them from AutoZone. They are 1/8" diameter.
Heres a pic of my s14 gauge pod. I hate my gauge, and am getting a new one.

mixedwell - like Jeff said, I have the autometer s13 dual pod, I was very impressed with the fitment, almost flawless... the one gap is at the bottom which may or may not be intentional, for those who need to run lines, and don't want to drill holes.
Jeff - like posted earlier, Summit jacked me. I didn't get any of the plastic rivet things, but if I do say so myself, I like the carbon steel screws I got from the hardware store better anyhow, at first I thought they'd be too beefy, but as it turns out, I really like how they look! :)

if u dont want anythin exposed like screws or hte edges of hte pillar u could always bondo and repaint your pillar to make it look nice...it takes a lot of work but in the end it comes out lookin good...heres a pic of my friends 240 in which he used bondo and repainted: http://www.digitalpose.com/mbr/1/17339/p/266570_8567485056552794715_vl.jpg

if you wanna give double-sided tape a try, try 3M Molding tape or something like that, its for door moldings and such, very strong. held my molding on as well as anything else i feel like sticking anywhere!
