i myself remember when i ate the nastiest=cheapest food for months at a time in order to afford certain parts. (mac and cheese wasnt so bad, but try eating it for a month straight:smash:)
lets hear some other action of sacrifice you have made for your car....

Yah I work on it 4 nights a week after work for 6 hours.... Usually up until midnight wrench on it....
Its a great sense of accomplishment when its done, now for paint and a little more fabbing.... I am just more addicted to fabbing up something for the car now rather than just buying parts. THat is way more fun....
If that works, pretty addicted...

This is the absolute truth. I noticed that everyone who is "Addicted" to their car is younger, not saying that it's a bad thing. But as I have gotten older the car is not worth missing out on other things in life, like vacation, my wife, time with family & friends.
I love working on the car, but I just want to get it done so I can spend more money on the track then on the car itself. The car should have been done a year ago but vacations with the wife and other expenses kept it from getting completed. Hell if I could sell the car for what I've put into it, I probably would and build something else more reliable and not needing as much work.

i've been working on 240's since i was about 10 or 11....i am now about to be 19 and was super addicted back when i was 12-17ish. now, i don't daily my car anymore and it's pretty much a straight track car now. i've kinda grown out of the addicted to the car thing and am now addicted to the track.
money for events and tires is where it's at.

^^ NOLA peep
So... Addicted... NO.
Obsessed is closer to truth... I am 32... I build Racing Boats (56' Race Cats, etc...).
My mother taught me how to work on cars when I was 8.
Re-built a old CJ Jeep, chassis up when I was 10.
Drawing and designing vehicles from birth... honestly I can't remember when I started drawing.
The S14 has been down for over 5 years... my GF of 7 years has supported my every decision and even purchased some high dollar parts as gifts.
Friends and people around me always ask "when is the car going to be done"... truthfully... I dont have a deadline and I am in no rush to finish.
I am returning to college.
Finnishing my Masters in Industrial Design
and starting to build my very own supercar... from scratch.
^^ this is my life goal... everything in-between... is just life.

Toyo R888s... top two are 245 width, and i'd say the bottoms are 275s!
And oyeah... so addicted, I've spent over 16k, lost two girlfriends, killed a ton of brain cells, killed 4 engines, bought and sold a truck and trailer just to haul it when it didn't run, and I still love it. :)

another S14 that I'm taking my time getting ready

so yeah, I still have a lot of love for the s-chassis

instead of throwing my paychecks at the car
I now try to get as much overtime and develop parts
to support my car habit.

No matter how much I love my car, nothing can ever make me touch hydraulics again. I have learned my lesson, and as much as I will love and cherish my 300zx swap, I will never be touching the hydraulic lines again. Basically, I learned that things are either 100% or 0%, there is no in between in stopping power :(. but my calipers are fancy so yay :) (there may be some pics after i get my car back from the brake place I have checking it out)
Basically: 240sx>many things but the love does not extend to doing my own brakes.
p.s. importnut is silly/ not that helpful when you are actually doing the install on 300zx brakes. Lacks a list of required tools and suggested methods that I thought were pretty vital
and in Conclusion:
Brake Hydraulic Hate> my 240sx love > many things
final edit: I guess I should really say that I hate 12 years of seized aluminium hard line flare nuts and everything. I know, brakes arent that hard, but stupid hard lines were a bitch to loosen :( and I think my bmc was faulty :( so the damn thing hemorrhaged fluid out the back :( Mostly just bad luck but still, I will never touch hydraulics again but I guess I dont really need to now that I have the 300zx on all 4 corners. On the bright side the e-brake works really well and got me safely down the block to a brake place to sort out my issues :)
mondojackal
03-20-2009, 02:56 AM
How did you have issues? Brakes are not that complicated. I'm not trying to be a dick, but as long as the BMC has fluid and isn't sucking air, you really can't mess up too bad.
I spend waaayyyy too much money on my car. I literally work just to buy stuff for my car. I keep a bunch of money in savings just so that I can jump on parts that are more expensive than what I'd normally be able to afford. For example some wheels that are a complete steal and are gonna sell fast, I'll have the cash for it.
Difficult to do when you're a college student.
And I totally use my school money to pay for car stuff.
DataXUnknown
03-20-2009, 03:15 AM
Honestly, I'm addicted. Everyday I work, I just think of how much money is going to be left for me to buy something for my car. My ultimate dream is to completely rebuild a 240sx from bottom to top. 100% from nothing on the chassis, to everything plus more on the chassis. Girls have always prevented me from going insane on my car. Always bringing up the good ol' "You love your car more than me, no really you do, I'm always going to be 2nd best in your life". She didn't understand if she would have supported me more, she would most definitely be first.
But yeah, I work on other peoples cars to learn for my own car, grasping different concepts and such and apply them later on. I don't have enough for a dd and never will because I just spend it all on my current 240. It's gotten to the point where I need to have it sit for a couple days at a time, but I have to drive to work everyday so I pretty much put my car half-ass back together to just make it barely drivable so I can get to work, come back and take it apart again.

... so I have two S-chassis cars, and no bike right now. It's killing me.
I really have taken to my JefeS14 though... it's definitely "mine", since I built it from the frame up... and it's just so damned well-behaved. Everything I do to it makes it better.
Oh, and it's sexy as SHIT now with some nice wheels and wide, wide, WIDE body.
So yeah, it's enough to keep me away from bikes for a year :)

Awesome Thread!! Now I can come clean about my HORRIBLE addiction.
Hello, My name is Scott. I am addicted to modifying my cars, especially the 240sx chassis. I havent been sober for 3 years now but with a little help, I think I can stop buying shit for my car.
Here is an example of hitting "rock bottom" for our cars:
NEW Moldings
NEW Hood Hinges
NEW Door Hinges
NEW Sheetmetal Trunk
$200 worth of SFI Cage Padding
Powdercoated ALL Suspension Parts <-- Im serious
MEDIA BLASTED my chassis <---- Like sucking **** for coke
Origin Lab FPR Doors.... wasnt good enough.... made custom backing plates of 6061 Aluminum for strength.
And of course the usual mods:
Fuel Cell, 10 pt Cage, Tubbed Front End, Custom Seat Rails, LS2 Swap
I just became a preferred customer of Summit Racing apparently.
Hopefully we all can use each other for support :bowrofl:

I was addicted to the chassis and the scene hardcore.
Up until I lost a job/apartment and a relationship for it.
Thankfully it only took a month of hardwork to get my feet back on the ground with the job/living space problem. The relationship is fucked obviously:)
I've switched my goals from having a fully built chassis/motor
to rebuilding the sr20 that I've owned for years, getting some body work done, rebuilding my JICs and getting the car painted.
Clean car that will perform loads better over stock, that's my goal.
I almost want a new bed more than my SR though honestly.

... so I have two S-chassis cars, and no bike right now. It's killing me.
I'll stand up with you buddy, I had to sell my Ducati last Fall; to pay for my engine build. At the end of the day, this is my passion, I've done more in my 6 years with cars and bikes then many, proclaimed, enthusiasts will ever do. I live cars and bikes, they stand out to me as marvels of engineering and all I can think of is making my own version of the 240sx. I have lost many g/f's and a few friends, but at the end of the day my determination and commitment have taken me a further.
The only problem I see, is that people need to understand thought is required for this passion. Don't compromise your life to satisfy your need, upgrade it. Strive to do more with your self and realize that a better life brings a better car. Get your shit straight, THEN build the car. you'll be much happier when you don't have to sweat about buying a part.

have my s14 and an evo.
I like tracking my evo a lot.
took it did 3 track events within the first month i got the car last year.
I racked up $4k cc debt last year between track events, tires, pads, & misc repairs.
that's about the worst.
will do more tracking when the cc is paid off.
with my 240, i'll be glad if it doesn't blow another tranny. :(
i'm addicted to driving it around town.
if i don't get to drive it for a week, i get antsy.
i'm also terribly depressed over selling my pos crx sometime ago.
i guess you don't find out how much you appreciate something until it's gone.

i also live with my parents. but ive had s14's for years now. ive given up driving twice now. this time for 6 months so far and still counting.. the time before was 7 months..
i drove my for a bit, then took it off the road this past fall. and have been doing my molded widebody overfenders, paint, stitch welding, fixing rust/dents, sr swap with a big turbo etc etc etc. my parents rarely let me take their cars. they say i make enough to buy myself a nice car but i continue to put money into my "shitbox" instead. i work for my dad so i dont have to drive anywhere for work, im not in school yet but will bein the fall. so im busting ass cuz i knowwhen i get to schoool i wont be able to dump money into it weekly.
i refuse to buy a dd cuz i dont want to spend money for another car and insurance for it when i could be putting it into my s14.
and after i pay my bills. i usually spend about 90% of the money left over on the car :)
but i love her and dont want ot let her go

worked everyday to buy parts. maxed out the cc ( we will always be in debt so eff it ) quit the job to go to school so i can earn more money to buy more parts when i grad. lost the gf. car still has a ka now not like my previous sr'ed 240s. focusing more on suspension for track. finally started this year on autox and drifting will be this year too. so after 4 other s13 chassis finally bought my 5th. i cant get away from it.

I am so addicted to parts that I have made friends all over the world Japan, Germany, middle east, to AUS. I made them through searching and buying parts haha. Plus I think its okay to spend hundreds of dollars on just shipping parts only........but I complain when I have to pay for shipping on items that has nothing to do on my car. Like a couple days ago I was pissed to pay $10 to ship a pair of shoe.

I'm addicted enough to be more worried about getting it back out of the shop than going to court for my DUI.

So does that make ur gf knockoff? LOL I'm pretty addicted and when I finally found a girl that could not only deal with my obsession, but also is willing to help, I decided to marry her. So the wedding is in two months and I'm still pouring cash into the busted ass S13 to try to make it a replica of the one I had when her and I first met. :P

WOW have u guys noticed how many relationships went wrong because of our car addiction?
I spend alot of time workin on my car because there is and always will be somethin to do on it. The girl i was seeing ended up cheating on me with her ex, it was time for that bitch to go anyways she was taking valuable time away from me lol. A week later her best friend calls me to see how im doin, and now im dating the best friend. The ex bitch ended up moving to indiana because she couldnt believe what just happened. The new girl doesent lie, swear, complain, goes to church every sunday, and prays for my unholy ass lol. and to top that off shes into cars and helps me out alot.
So to all of you guys out there that lost that girl you thought was the one, dont worry about it there will be better hell maby even the best friend lol. You cant always have cheereos for breakfast sometimes u got to try captain crunch or coco puffs lol

I have to say I've calmed down from my car addiction alot. I'm trying to focus more on school these days and my woman. we've gone through some tough times over my car, believe me. but I think though in the end I could never give her up over the car though, which I have to honestly say I could never do awhile ago. I've come to learn that more things are more important then a car. and if I had to sell it I could always get another later in life. I plan on doing some events coming up and potentially taking a break once fulfilled, or just pulling out all together. my parents just recently got a divorce, so I'm gonna have to help my mom pay morgage since she took a second for my dad to get a ferrari. which was kinda a waste now that they're splitting up. I'm also paying for my tacoma but my mom is helping me with that too. she respects my hobby and does what she can to help me fullfill my goals. but over all I have to say i've calmed down from my addiction alot. I've spent so much money on my car this past year that I am now flat broke. I still have myself having car fits though over parts I wish I could have but could not afford.

i come to zilvia to look for parts for my s13.

but if i was in INeedNewTires shoe's i'd do the same! haha
but either then that everyday i have that battle of
should i waste more money on this or more money on
parts with my car(legit brand rims or body kits etc.)....

I really try not to place too much focus, time, & resources on any 1 recreation.
Not so obssesed with cars as I once was.
trying to maintain some healthy balance between social life, arts, food, education, boozing, trying to a read at least 1 book per month, and discovering new hobbies.
as far as car stuff goes, I'm just messing w/ my 240 at a more leisurely rate this yr.
already did a 300zx tranny swap, got a nicer seat & working on a car audio setup so far.
with track events, only did 2 modest autoX events.
going to focus on tuning my suspension for autoX.
also trying to get the audio setup done right.
then there's also the matter of repairing on the dents & new tires for my lancer.
when you get to your 30's, too much the car stuff (as a hobby at least) begins to get a little depressing.

I used to be pretty hooked on my car, spending every damn paycheck on it, but now I have really calmed down from that and have saved up alot of money to invest it into stocks and such.
The last girl I was going out with said I spent way too much time with my car than her but that wasn't as bad as I was before but w/e she was crazy.
But even than I still never spent EVERYTHING I had in my bank account for my cars, I always kept plenty incase something happened to my dd and I needed money for it, or an emergency.

definately addicted. like a few guys have said, im addicted to the sport not so much the chassis. however the s chassis i what im most familiar with.
i dont let a single moment pass in my day without pondering on how things work. always been fascinated with the actual mechanics of things, how to make something work or make it work better etc. my biggest issue is planning ahead. ill plan a setup to solve a certain situation down to the exact number of hose clamps, length of hose, screws/zipties or custom brackets i need to accomplish the job nearly a week or two in advance.
also have a 2 year serious relationship that sprouted off of a 5 year friendship. she doesn't outright mind cars and actual encourages me to invest myself into something i love and have total passion for. she just hates when i confuse "our" time with "the cars" time. if anything she doesn't care what i spend as long as the bills get paid. she wants me to focus more on the NOW aspect of life than always building for the future.
i/e enjoy your car as it is not instead of always looking for what else can be done.
this thought process caused me to come to a dead hault on my now 2+ year old ls1 s14 to build a sr20 daily s13 that i finished last night.

Not sure if I would call it an addiction. In order to be addicted, that would mean that you are doing whatever it takes to get, use, etc, etc. Infatuated maybe??? I don't have a good term for it, but when I am around my 13, I always want to do something to it. I am always looking for parts online for some reason. Either upgrades or regular maintenance items. Everytime I start her up I smile. Every chance I get, I find a nice curvy road and get on it a bit. Damn I miss Europe................

bought my first 240 just not too long ago
away at college when i bought it, but the car is at home right now
had a intern that i turned down at the college to come home and work on the 240 just the 240
the grilfriend came to visit from michigan, said it was pointless to work on a car, blah blah blah blah
i told her you dont understand anything "its like customizing your body like for example you pick a top swim suit and a different bottom swim suit to make yourself all sexy"
she doesnt get it how it relates to building a car....
we didnt talk for couple days.... she comes back to me and says "its like building your own skateboard like picking your own deck, truck and wheels?"
YES!!!!!!
now she thinks 240's are hot and says ugly ugly ugly ugly ugly to any member's ride on this forum hahaha
