View Full Version : 2010 Convention Poll

Ok, a few questions to all of you planning on attending the '10 convention. It will have been 8 long years since the last '02 convention...which Alex did a phenomenal job of putting together. This upcoming year we want to allow people a chance to plan ahead and save their cash to come to the event. With the economy the way it is right now, Sam, Kevin and I would like to ask your opinion on the tickets.
The '02 convention was 3 days.
1-SpeedZone, meet and greet/lunch/fun on the tracks
2-Nissan HQ raffle and basically 'show'
3-Track event at Willow
The tickets were available for all 3 days if desired, or you could cut out the track day to make it a bit cheaper.
This is the pricing that the '02 convention had:
Convention package:
Before May 31st:
$165 if paying by check/money order
$170 if paying by Paypal/credit card payment (to cover the 3% fee that Paypal charges)
After May 31st:
$180
Speedzone:
$30/person if paid by June 15th
$40/person if paid after June 15th
· Price includes all-you-can-eat pizza/lasagna dinner, $23 game credit (towards arcade games or grand prix tracks), and one round of minigolf.
Saturday convention:
$25/person if paid by May 31st
$30/person if paid after May 31st
· Price of convention registration includes one convention t-shirt, one raffle ticket, official convention souvenir program, convention lanyard and nametag, and catered lunch.
· Additional raffle tickets can be purchased for $2 each at the event.
· T-Shirts are $12 each, lanyards are $3 each if purchased separately.
· Additional meal tickets are available at $10 each, on a first come first serve basis.
Sunday Track Event:
$110/person if paid by May 31st
$120/person if paid by June 30th
· Price of track event is for one day of hot-lapping at Streets of Willow on Sunday July 28th, 2002. *This price is PER DRIVER, not per vehicle. *
· A 50% deposit must be paid by May 31st in order to secure your spot for the track event. *This deposit is non-refundable.
· Regular track admission rate is $120/person.
This upcoming convention, we would like to know if you all would rather go the cheaper route (especially since a lot of you will be driving from long distances) and not have as many frills...or would you like to keep it in the "all the bells and whistles" tradition that Alex set up?
Obviously, there will be T-shirts, name tags, stickers, raffle ticket ect with the ticket purchase price...but What we want is an honest feed back about how much you would all be willing to pay.
If you want it cheaper and less extravagant then we can work that...or if you want bigger and better...we need to know.
Thanks for taking our poll!

do you have an approx date, say the month or season in 2010 for this event?
is there any way you can join if you just do the track event?
with the track event, it would be appreciated if you can give more details.
how many run groups, how many cars per run group, how many runs can each run grp expect to get, availability of instructors, timing eqipment, rules, etc.
I know it might sound tedious, but the organization & safety of such events are important.
With Speedzone, is it correct to assume this is a Friday event?
Is it in the evening or all-day?

Ron,
If you wish to just do the track date that can be a possibility. That is not finalized yet as there is no way to set a reservation for '10 quite yet.
As for dates, we are looking at spring break of 2010. This will avoid a lot of heat that good ol Cali has in the summer time.
The track day will most probably be a road course. It would suck to have someone from FL show up, drift, crash, and then not be able to get their car home.

Yes, spring break would be a good time i agree.
When you say the track even will probably be a road course,
do you mean this will be a grip event? (as opposed to drift).
Also, when you said Willow, I am assuming this is Willow Springs (in Rosamond, CA) and not Button-willow correct?
If it's Willow Springs, do you plan to do the big track, or 'Streets of Willow', or Horse-thief Mile?
Thank you for your assistance!

Speedzone is in City of Industry, CA close to Los Angeles.

As far as Nissan HQ,
I was under the impression their main US hq moved from Gardena to some town TN in '05 or '06.
Maybe there is another facility operated by Nissan in socal somewhere.
Willow Springs track is in Rosamond. It's approx 2 hrs north-east of los angeles.

Yes, Nissan HQ moved.....The current venue is tentatively decided but not released for sure yet.
And yes, grip driving...not drifting. Willow Springs is the track we are planning on using as of right now...and more than likely "streets of willow" for the track.

It is in Cali for a few reasons..
#1) The organizers are here
#2) The business support is here
#3) The tracks are here
#4) It is easier to set up contact and get things organized from here for here, than from here for say....FL

250 - 300 for me.
Although this will be nothing short of an epic event, times are tough right now with and the possibility of getting laid off from my job of 9 years... TOMORROW.
No excuse, I will make this event regardless.

i would be willing to spend 300$, im not sure if im going to be doing the track day tho since im driving all the way down from calgary or saskatoon (this is canada) because i need this to get me back home.
however i would like this to have alot of stuff going on.
Maybe get Dorkidori to design the shirts? lennon does amazing shirts.
Maybe even a sweet sticker for the 2010 convention?

Well,
The reason we are leaning away from a drift event is to prevent accidents for people that have a long drive. The possibility of a drift event is doable, but, there would need to be waivers signed and such. We are just trying to look out for the people making a long drive, and keeping them from being screwed should an accident on the track occur.

I'm cool with 350. I figure that since this wont be a for profit thing, the more I give the more I could get in return.

why not have different sessions? that way some people can participate in the drift part of the event, and others can compete in the grip session.
or maybe people can compete in both (extra wheels, adjust their setup) and have fun with both sessions!

I think the half drift/half grip idea is great for the track portion. With SRT Trackdays, what we did was run a drift group for a certain amount of time, and have the grip group lined up ready to go, and send them on their way for a set time and rotate. Eventually it ended up with "go do whatever you want", but I mean if there is a lot of people and it is well organized, I think it would be perfect. I wouldn't mind paying $300-$350, as long as it lives up to it's price and hopefully be able to drift at the track. Sorry but I really don't like hot lapping when there are cars with a huge variety of different HP ratings and such. Makes me feel embarrased.
On a side note***
*** I lost $48 on the game "stacker" at speedzone. Don't even play that game. With groups of people around, it encourages you to play more because everyone cheers you on, even though it's easy as hell to get to the last block.

Personally, I'm completely against drifting except from people who can be readily towed home (IE bringing their own trailers / having AAA and living within a couple hundred miles). I don't want to see someone from FL or TX come out. smash their car and be unable to get home.
As it is, I'm probably going to see if I can find a couple of spare KA's in case someone blows theirs up on the track.

ya he's got alot of spare 240.
oh and alot of spare parts including front and rear suspension arms etc..
here's the truth about drifting.
the socal track owners don't like drifters so only a few will allow drifting,
the tracks that allow drifting are usually small so not really fun for time attack.
depend on the sponsors and budget, there are possibility of doing both, but I'm sure it'll be 2 different track.

for the out of state guys:
don't think of it as a negative experience.
ever watch national lampoon where they take a road trip across america and
experience different things on the way here?
think of it as a experience of a life time.
there will be regional contact available as soon as possible and people can contact
them to arrange travel and caravan arrangements.
for example, people from Florida can meet somewhere early drive to Texas meet up
with the Texas group, stay a day or two, party, hang out with them then travel together to the next stop(AZ, NM, or maybe vegas group).
what I'm trying to say is it'll be a fun if you know how to arrange it.
as for you guys driving on the track I sugget you share cost for a truck and trailer with fellow locals and if one of you break down atleast you can get the car home.
another way is to pre-arrange with a local shop here to have things fix if things do happen.
anyone got better ideas feel free to add, please be positive

The only thing with me right now would be that you are saying it will be "around spring break." I don't have a problem with that I just really hope it is on my spring break or else I probably won't be able to go.
touge dreamer
03-19-2009, 01:44 PM
^^^ true, cus people do have different spring breaks, but the exact times will be figured out later with additional input. I think spring break would be perfect:hsdance:, especially here in socal, to get away from the crazy heat in the summer:down:.
I think two sessions for the track event would be great. Maybe use the Streets of Willow for grip and Balcony for a drift event:2f2f::2f2f: all on the same day... And if people plan on coming long distances, they should plan for the worst at a track event, and bring spare parts or a trailer( even rent one).
Also maybe give people choices if they want to just pay for one day, two days, or all three days, in case some people dont wanna do a track event, but wanna join in the other two days, that way it gives those out of state people choices and a better reason to come..:w00t: party, three nights straight!
Also having a huge caravan/road trip across America and partying at every stop.... makes me wanna drive to FL just to drive back and join the road trip.:rawk:

Me and Dave will have a deathmatch to see who is first in line! LOL!
IF there is going to be a track event, it SHOULD ideally be a grip/drift event. Let's be honest:
1- If you want the attendance you have to have drift sessions.
2- If there is a track event it is almost certainly going to be at the streets of willow or horsethief mile, either of which will allow drifting.
3- It would be pretty rad to get everyone together at the track to have a good time (drifters and grip guys).
I would personally like to do some drifting, if I have my e-brake attached by then that is! IMO if we should lose anything it should be the speedzone crap. I would be happier at a big ass park, with all the 240's lined up out front, just chillin with everyone (barbecue is mandatory...) then I would be at speedzone. I would much rather go out on a REAL track with my REAL car and have some REAL fun then piddle around on go-karts at speedzone if I had to choose between the two.

have the Texans meet us in Amarillo, and we can just cruise Route 66 the whole way. and going the southern route is DEFINITELY necessary when we're talking about spring. i got stuck in a blizzard in Utah one time going to SF in april.

i'm down with that, each region needs to coordinate a rendezvous point and go in a group from there. I'm still debating driving vs trailoring my car...
I'll help organize the DFW crowd to meet in amarillo but we need to lock down some hard dates and times, so we can request days off of work and what not.
Also everyone needs to budget extra for unexpected costs and repairs. Spend lots of time prepping the car, good alignment, good tires, de-ghetto important stuff like suspension and electronic shit. Make sure the car wont over-heat and will actually make the journey! its not likely that ALL 40+ 15yr old cars owned by broke asses are going to make the trek all the way.

i think they stand a better chance than most people think. it's all highway miles... as long as the cars are properly maintained (LOL) they should be fine.

If I am able to make this trip, I will probably just spectate the track events. I voted to = or <$300.00. If I can't have my hatch ready, I will just drive the Z out there. Hopefully things will pan out or the best.

It doesn't look like this has any official organizers. So I would say this convention has died, unless I am proven wrong and there actually has been progress. People need to plan for it so it should have been up what is going on and such.

If I do make it down to this, there's no way I'll be tracking it. I don't want to break anything on the track then have to drive a billion miles back. I'll just watch and take pictures.
Anyone making an East Coast cruise to this?
i know there is a few of us up in the toronto area of ontario that may be making this trip, is it actually happens. this convention is all up on are forums up here

Speedzone is in City of Industry, CA close to Los Angeles.
17871 Castleton Street
City of Industry, CA 91748
Speed Zone (http://www.speedzone.com/losangeles/hours.html)
As far as Nissan HQ,
I was under the impression their main US hq moved from Gardena to some town TN in '05 or '06.
Maybe there is another facility operated by Nissan in socal somewhere.
Willow Springs track is in Rosamond. It's approx 2 hrs north-east of los angeles.
3500 75th Street West
Rosamond, CA 93560

why not have it in tn!!! the new headquarters is not even an hour outta downtown nashville!

As stated before, the organizers are in socal. The tracks are in socal. The manufacturer support is in....oh yeah socal.
There is no debate as to where it is going to be held. We are not going to keep nitpicking all day "oh it should be here" ... "no no it should be there" it will never end.
Plain and simple, all other attempts at national conventions OUTSIDE of Cali have failed miserably. One never even got off the ground. The other had poor attendance (nothing against the organizers, it just didn't pan out as expected).
When there is more to update on the convention (early feb.) then it will be posted :)

There IS a team that is working on it, but much like everyone else, we all have personal lives, jobs, family and our cars as well.
I seriously wish people would STOP ASSUMING and making assumptions that are FALSE.
If you are not apart of the convention planning committee, then no, you guys won't know what is going on behind the scenes. Yes, we understand that everyone else needs to plan as well, but in this economy things are taking a bit longer than expected.

It's a sunny day here in California at 65 degrees fahrenheit, as it always is throughout most of the year. There are many car shows today here, like the Grand National Roadster Show in Fairplex/Pomona.
What car events are happening today in Tennesse? Oh, and what's the wheather like there?
Wheather Channel says it's near freezing at 37 degrees fahrenheit.

I have four seasons, its nice. Ive seen snow too! And If everyone in SOCAL is ganna be a jackass, ill stay home. I though we are all on the same team?
Anyway, I think what ppl are saying is that if it not happening at all, we will organize a midwest meet. SO info on that is nice to have.
Since there is a "committee" maybe you guys should appoint a public relations individual. Because the communication is poor at best. I am very glad to see some progress.
But it seems a little secretive and this regional high horse shit needs to stop. Its happening in So-Cal because majority rules, not because its the best place on earth. To only see cars from so-cal would be kinda lame. Maybe you should be more respectful to everyone willing travel from across the country (and Canada!) to make this meet worth a shit. Without diversity this meet will be nothing special.

Dont get so fired up man.
Most of us arent even from SoCal or living here wither.
We have all seen snow too, lmao!
The "Comitee" is being a bit secretive so that mis-information doesnt run rampant, like it will do.
It is happening this summer.
That has been stated.
It is also much bigger than just Zilvia.
This is all the Forums together.
Its gonna cost thousands, let alone the man hours.
Please dont bring negativity in here and discourage and disrespect the hard work and sacrifice that is going on for everyones benifits.
The best place for this is CA.
Where its sunny everyday.
where all the major car and entertainment for the country comes from.
Multiple tracks.
Highest density of members/attendees (who will be the majority of the people coming to this meet and paying to have it.)
Highest number of people with couches for out of towners to sleep on!! :)
Highest number of local "tour guides" available.
Highest number of non car related things to do.
From the proposed area, some things that are within an hour drive-
Disneyland,
venice beach

willow springs.

Thank you..
Trust me im not trying to be negative at all.Communicated via text can kinda be misleading. I understand not telling use everything as it happens, that would indeed be catistrophic. I think most ppl completly understand that socal is the meca of 240s and there is a lot of 240 guys saturated in the general area.
I think we all just want to be informed when possible and in a clear and organized manner. And without any hate! Im SO glad to see everyone wanting this to happen, from all the states and all the forums.

I think within this month there may be some solids.
Cant say for sure, but from what i hear 2nd hand.
I think it was Lisa that made the statement a couple weeks ago that its gonna be in the summer in SoCal, so start saving everyone. :boink:

As far as this goes, it is going to be held, end of summer. WE are still waiting on venues to get back to us. It isn't all just us sitting on our thumbs. The "committee" working on it has to keep things to themselves, as Eric said, false information will ensue. Trust me when I say there is still PLENTY of time to plan for this on your parts. Just because I am not updating you everyday does not mean that there is not stuff in the works. As far as "public relations" that is ME, I was the one appointed to put info out...AS Determined by the group as a whole.
Now if you think that all the Cali members are going to be jackasses...trust me when I say that any douchebaggery will not be tolerated...from any attendee from any state. If anyone does not act in a respectful manner, you can and will be escorted from the event.
Again, as stated, we will be putting out a good portion of info here shortly. Everyone is in a RUSH to get this going, but if you have NEVER put an event on of this size and proportion, then I do not expect you to understand the magnitude of what is going on behind the scenes and what the committee is doing...this is not just "some meet up" that is being half assed thrown together.
