So i got the low baller thought of buying a broken as-is 360 on ebay and fixing it.. i.e. red ring of death and taking it apart to reseat/mod heatsinks on the chips... *I like taking things apart and tinkering with em*
being on a budget, i know ebay auctions dont really say which revision it is.. but can a base plain 360 be modded to be just as good as a premium with HDD and HDMI??
I got a 40gb sata laptop hdd thats out of my ps3, can that be adapted to teh 360? what is needed to be done to play legal back ups?

OH BOY GET A PEN AND PAPER FOR THIS ONE.....
Flashing the Firmware of your Xbox 360 DVD-Drive
NOTE: this firmware modification will only allow you to boot Back-ups, no other programs or emulators can be installed using this firmware modification
First lets check which DVD-drive your Xbox 360 contains, eject the drive tray and compare against the photo below to determine which DVD-drive you have. Compare the drive tray against your own drive to determine which model you drive is and proceed accordingly. The Phillips is also referred to as the benq model and the lite on is the most recent. (remove faceplate to see wire colour) All models are flashable but require different processes.
Please note these tutorial are the most recent tutorials and software downloads. In the case of the samsung and benq the ck3 is only used for power you can also just use the power from the pc if you want to save a few bucks. (of course run a wire between 360 and pc chassis, to ground) and leave the video cable plugged in the 360. If your drive doesn't look like these take the face of as noted below:

Instructions for opening your Xbox 360
You will need a few tools to perform this operation:
Torx 7,10 and 12 screwdrivers
Small flat head screw driver
long thin object (less than 1mm thick)
If you take apart your Xbox 360 it will void your warranty immediately
Start by disconnecting all the cables and lay the Xbox 360 on it's side.
http://sitemembers.org/Images/a360.jpg
Here we have the Xbox 360 waiting to be 'cracked' open The first step is to remove the 'Faceplate'
Take a look at the front of the Xbox 360 and insert your thumb into the door that covers the two USB ports on the right of the unit. With your other hand squeezing the upper and lower sides of the face plate, pull out the face plate with your thumb. With not much force, the face plate should pop right off.
http://sitemembers.org/Images/b360.jpg
After the face plate has been pulled off you will see a silver Microsoft sticker covering a gap; remove this. You will also see four small clips locking the top half of the plastic shell to the bottom half. Do not attempt to wedge the clips out at this point.
With some care, gently bend outwards, the right gray ventilation shield on the right side of the unit so that you can see a bit inside. You will notice that the gray side piece attaches to both the bottom and top white chassis. Now look through the holes on top of the unit to locate the areas where the gray side pieces attaches to the white body. What you need to do is take a long thin object and push down through the white holes (located on both the top and bottom of the Xbox 360) where the clips of the gray side pieces connect. Slowly pull out the gray pieces away from the unit while unlocking the clips and eventually the gray piece will release itself.
http://sitemembers.org/Images/c360.jpg
To remove the left gray piece, you must first remove the hard drive unit by pressing the button located on the unit itself. Then apply the same procedure used to remove the right gray ventilation piece but when you reach the bottom clip of the piece, you must remove the rubber feet located directly below, to reveal a hole where you can insert a long thin object as you did in the last step.
http://sitemembers.org/Images/d360.jpg
For this next step you have two options the first is to ignore the references to the plastic keys and just use a small thin screwdriver to release the snaps holding the shell or follow the preferred method which requires a couple of pieces of plastic that is stiff enough to act as a key to release the snaps. The plastic dome cover that comes with most CD's/DVD's is a perfect choice.
http://sitemembers.org/Images/e360.jpg
Take the cover from your spindle of CD's /DVD's and cut a bit from the side of it and put it over area shown in the photo below and mark out where the holes will need to be cut. Or press into these areas with a small screwdriver to release the snap and use anything handy to wedge the area open so that the snaps won't snap back into the locked position while attempting to release the others
http://sitemembers.org/Images/f360.jpg
Cut the plastic so that the tabs that stick up are about 1cm (less than 1/2 inch) long The finished key should look something like the one in the photo below.
http://sitemembers.org/Images/g360.jpg
Now repeat and create another key for the remaining slots near the bottom of the Xbox 360 Again mark your plastic and keep the tabs about 1cm in length this key will have 5 tabs total versus the 2 tabs for the first key we made.
Once the key is made simply push it firmly into the slots until you hear the snaps release now separate the case halves slightly and use the key as a wedge to prevent them from reattaching while working on the top of the Xbox 360.
http://sitemembers.org/Images/h360.jpg
Repeat the procedure with the remaining key and all 7 snaps should now be released.
http://sitemembers.org/Images/i360.jpg
Lift the case shell carefully making sure no snaps are remaining while trying
to avoid any latches from reattaching.
http://sitemembers.org/Images/j360.jpg
To get access to the DVD Drive all you need to remove is the six long screws circled in RED
Don't remove the heat-sink screws circled in Green or the screws circled in Blue unless you want to completely dissemble the Xbox 360, we only need access to the DVD-drive
http://sitemembers.org/Images/k360.jpg
Once you have the 6 screws removed, flip the Xbox 360 right side up and lift up the top plastic shell. You should now be greeted with the internals of the Xbox 360
http://sitemembers.org/Images/l360.jpg
Last step removal of the DVD-drive, simply hold the drive and lift up. You will notice that the Xbox 360's DVD drive uses a Serial ATA (SATA) interface and we will need to connect the PC's SATA cable to the drive while leaving the Xbox 360 power cable attached.

On the Wii I swapped the white case for a black one put a led fan and change the led front light the gate light from blue to green.

Sorry man I don't mod other people xbox I don't wanna be held responsible for it the only mod I will do would be to fix your red ring that's about it but doing the whole flashing of the firmware I dont really do unless I get a broken or three ring xbox off Clist or ebay for dirty chip,.
If your really worried about messing it up but you REALLY wanna have a flashed 360 then buy this
The Llamma's Game Console Parts and Accessories (http://secure.llamma.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=73_86&products_id=661&osCsid=2bad0082eb913cbf9db5a2de3ab1f992)
It's basically a second dvd drive and flash that one but there's is some work involed you will need to hook up you old dvd drive to a pc and retrive the lock code. But if you look online you can find people that do it for you and stuff
Or just get a mod chip then all you have to do is know how to solider or they also have a eternal mod chip which works just the same
damn... that is tempting
I think its worth it I mean why spend 60 bucks on one game when for 30 bucks you can get a stack of 20 DVD-R DL and burn yourselfself 20 games and I can still play online so thats always a plus

haha you guys are funny.. thanks leftnut
im a pc nut /built watercooled my rig so i figure this should be easy.. Ill look at it as quest.. buy a cheap system on ebay fix it on a budget.
Saw a few vids on youtube about how to cure the rrod, basically the best way was to mod/make the heatsinks sit better on the chips.
So my understanding tho was that the early models dont have hdmi... and i play my ps3 thru my pc monitor with a hdmi-dvi chorde,.. could i do something simular on the 360 and get hd gaming out of it still?

Western Digital BEVS hard drive

Boot to DOS
Profit.
Saves you 100 bucks!
And if you want cheap wifi instead of buying the adapter for it, look into the router mod.

You can get a XBOX360 cable that goes to VGA which can be adapted to DVI if need be so you can use it on your monitor. I used to do this before I got an HDTV.

Yes, you open the 360 and take off the old X-Clips which is kind of scary as they are very high tension OEM. You replace the thermal paste and apply the X-Clamp and voila...most are fixed.
I even put mine in a towel and turned it on and let it over heat itself to fix it! Haha worked twice.

This really depends on what error your getting. There are some error codes that are basically unfixable. But before you go and tear into your RROD box check the EC. I've bought 3 broken boxes only to have 2 of them have EC74, which most of the time is the AV cable just being bad. Also IMO the X-Clamp is what causes the majority of the problems. It applies uneven pressure to the GPU and should be replaced. Otherwise your just bandaiding the problem rather than solving it. And the towel trick is the easiest way to completely fry an xbox that I know of, I would NEVER do this even with a CL box.
As far as upgrading the HDDVD drive its fairly straight forward and not all that difficult. Leftnut posted a pretty awesome walkthrough, probably a little too thorough hah.

Anyone know anything about the "open tray" error? My 360 quit reading discs altogether. When I put in a disc I hear 2 buzzing sounds like the drive spinning then it stops and it says open tray on the dashboard. This slowly started to happen about a few months I put in a disc it wouldn't read so I take it out and put it back in and it reads. It kept doing it more and more until it just stopped reading anything. I am in Iraq right now and really don't feel like sending it to microsoft so if anyone has any repair info please post it up.
Thanks

Looks like your going to have to send it to Microsoft or open it yourself and following this tutorial
Xbox DVD repair If your Xbox is freezing during games or returning the dreaded Dirty Disc Error you have a DVD drive problem.
If this all sounds like too much work you can always buy a replacement drive (http://secure.llamma.com/catalog/index.php?cPath=22)
First off, DO NOT BLOW CANNED AIR INTO THE DRIVE WITHOUT OPENING IT!
This will almost certainly make things worse, you just assure that the dust will be redistributed evenly inside the drive and this includes a coating on the optics you are trying to clean.
Steps to take in order to resolve Dirty Disk Errors-
1. Use a standard CD/DVD Cleaner (http://secure.llamma.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=24&products_id=97), they look like a normal CD but with two miniature brushes on them. This will only clean the lens. Sometimes this is all you need to be up and running.
2.Use this information to figure out what drive you are working with and what must be done to clean the lens in the next step.
Determine the manufacturer of your Xbox DVD drive (http://www.llamma.com/xbox/Repairs/xbox_dvd_version_comparison.htm).

4. Adjust the Potentiometer (pot) on the laser. Thompson Tutorial (http://www.llamma.com/xbox/Repairs/thompson_potentiometer.htm)
5. Replace the Laser in the DVD drive, purchase replacement Samsung (http://secure.llamma.com/catalog/advanced_search_result.php?keywords=laser&x=0&y=0) Phillips (http://secure.llamma.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=22&products_id=106) and Thompson (http://secure.llamma.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=105) lasers.
6. If none of the above options revive your drive you can rest assured you have tried it all... Get a new drive, they do go dead and its probably not your fault or the fault of your younger sibling-relative-friend that was messing with your xbox without your permission (yes I hear that a lot). You may notice that some of your games play fine while others do not. This is usually because some games are on DVD media and some are on CD media. CD's are single layer media while DVD's are multi layer media. This means it is easier to read a CD than it is to read a DVD. The concept of a DVD is to have several semi transparent layers of data. It is sort of like taking a few CD's stacking them together and smooshing them into a single disc. To read the 2-4 layers of data you must ignore the previous layers and pay attention to ones deeper in the disc. Obviously this is a more complex task and more subject to read errors. My description is not entirely accurate to keep the concepts easy to understand (if anyone would like to reference a technical explanation send me a link)
For instance the double disk of Jet Set Radio Future and Sega GT 2003 is a CD while Munch's Oddysee/Halo is on a DVD. Most often you will notice the bottom of the media is one of two colors, gold DVD's and Silver CD's. It is not 100% that gold=DVD and silver=CD so if you find this rule of thumb to not be true in every case... that's life.
If you know you have a DVD problem because the drive will not open or close, stay opened or closed or makes grinding and popping noises...
The number one quick fix for the DVD drive is to re-align the tray. This is common with CD players, CD changers as well. Many times just from normal use a gear will skip or something will jump track, unless all the pieces are in the right place at the time it powers up it will not work. So by removing the tray, aligning the internal parts to their starting position and re-inserting the tray you can often bring a drive back from the dead Thompson DVD Drive Tray Alignment Procedure (http://www.llamma.com/xbox/Repairs/thompson_dvd_tray.htm)

Hope it helps

the 360 needs a Bootloader disc, seriously.
Copy all your backup games onto the HD.
Insert Bootloader CD.
Win.
Something like HDAdvanced/HDLoader. That'd be cool.

PS3 may be alittle more expensive but will last you in the long run. Ive had mine since about 2 months after it came out and i have not had one problem with it. it seems as if its right out of the box ever time i play on it. and plus.. Blue ray disk is better than what x box can cover. they both have there qualities. but almost every one i know with x box has experianced the 3 ring death. and now they regret ever buying x box.

I was skeptical about XBOX too, but after owning it (Thanks bro!), i'm sold.
The network is amazing as hell.
And game selection is rad.
And Netflix.

XBOX LIVE cannot compare to PS network and who cares if its free, I keep in touch with a couple of buddys that live out of town over XBOX LIVE(bash on some noobs),And I do own a PS3, Anyways I own two 360's one was a gift and I had to get me the Elite just cuz of the HDMI output at the time.I figure after the three year warrenty runs out Im going to mod the hell out of it so I know what your trying to do and I do recomend it cuz you can buy one for like 100 bucks and fix it and your good to go(thats what one of my friend does, hes a computer geek). Theres alot of help and info online so you wont have trouble with the HOW TO info. You might find good info on youtube too.

I keep thinking about getting a PS3 I had one when they first came out but I was so disappointed with the online value I just returned it. I mean yeah its free but the connection sucks and at the time I was deep into Rainbow six vegas and every time I played NO ONE AND I MEAN NO ONE had a mic. So basically I had to watch out for myself. I seriously belive if the PS3 didn't support blueray the 360 would destroy it.

It is indeed soooooo worth it I bought a pack of 20 blank dvd disc so I can burn some games and I got them on Monday and now I'm left with only 3 disc lol I been burning shit left and right hahaha

baka! my dumbass bid on a 360 premium with 4 minutes left.. 85 bucks.. had everything the wireless controller, cables, power source, box, manual, just rrod... and at the alst minute someone bid 100.. i should have waited til the last minute because im sure it was the guy who was originally bidding on it.. he probably saw my bid and jumped it.. i shoulda waited grrrrrrrrrr...
figured id try for a system that at least has the bare essentials since piecing a bare broken console will probably cost more since id need a controller, hdd, cables power source etc..
