Can someone tell me what this is called and what it does...please? Thank you in advanced.

looks like an intake solenoid / valve

well, first off where did it come from on the engine? Secondly.. which engine do you have? blacktop s13?

1998 sr20det blacktop

I think it's the electric solenoid for the VVT or whatever it's called, but I'm not sure. Insert on the passenger side, right below the valve cover. You can see the hole where it belongs in that picture I posted. Thanks.

Lol....notice the hole in the picture...it probably came from there.

Anyhow its the VTC(Valve Timing Control) solenoid that changes the duration of the intake cam in the low-end for torque and emissions.

Why did you pull it out?

Ok great thanks for the help guys.

Im just trying to narrow down the cause of the infamous vvt rattle since there seems to be many different explanations for it. Thanks again guys.
