Question: Can a Neck tie be comfortable or more comfortable than another?

Alright so I'm currently having a little discussion/debate with my co-workers about neck ties. I feel that I can say the tie I'm currently wearing is the most comfortable tie I own.
Now, a few of my co-workers are saying that a neck tie cannot be comfortable simply because they'd rather not wear it to begin with. I know wearing ties sucks ass to begin with, but I do feel there are certain ties that I wear that I feel are comfortable.
I've giving them a few different examples to back up my way of thinking like for example; Police handcuffs VS kinky handcuffs, yeah I'd rather not wear handcuffs, but wouldn't you say the kinky ones are comfortable?
What do you guys think?

I'd say it's all preference. There's different materials ties are made of. I myself prefer a softer fabric. Some people even prefer clip-ons.

Fun fact: Did you know there are over 100 ways to tie a tie? I know one haha.

i think the uncomfortable factor comes more from the fully buttoned shirt than the neck tie, which goes over the shirt and can be tied as loose as you want it.

I am agreeing with the consensus here, in that the wearing of the tie in the first place is the cause of discomfort.
Wearing a tie you like, one that is pleasing to you may ease this, but I do not think that one tie would be more comfortable than another, ties are pretty much standard once you get past quality of materials used (for the record, I prefer woven silk, usually made by Format).
The shirt, on the other hand, makes ALL the difference.

considering the tie doesnt actually touch you, since it is on the outside of your shirt, i'm going to go with NO.

its all in the shirt and how you tie the tie..

i have to wear a tie every day at work. all ties, to me, feel the same no matter what brand and/or material. i think it's only uncomfortable if you're not used to wearing ties. kind of like when you first get eyeglasses and can feel them on your face all day. after a while, you barely notice they're there.

That's a very solid point. BUT, if it is pleasing to you isn't that comfort? If you had a tie that was too stiff or too thick wouldn't you consider it uncomfortable? If you can consider it uncomfortable then, vice versa, you should be able to consider it comfortable.

Now that I think about it, I realize it's more of the fit of the collar more than the tie. You can adjust the tie all you want, but if you're collar is too tight/loose, you just feel wierd haha.

Yeah, what he said.
Only idiots who don't know how to properly tie their tie complain about neckties being to tight.
There, fixed that for you.

If I wear a tie to an event, you better be sure that event is awesome.

I hate wearing ties.

I could care less what its made of as far as fabric goes.

I just feel "tie" downed when I wear one.

Ok let me ask you this. Would you rather wear that tie you have that does not co-operate with you? The one that is just a hassle to get the knot right, the one that is always going off to the side because it’s undoing itself? Or would you rather wear the tie you’re wearing now? (if you're wearing one).
Even if it’s not physical comfort like that of a warm blanket, there’s still a certain comfort level that comes with wearing a tie. One that doesn’t cause you to wonder weather or not the knot looks good in front of your boss and you can’t reach and check it because that’ll show a sign of insecurity… Mental comfort, physical comfort… it’s still comfort...

yup. unless your uncomfortable tie is made out of razor wire...

well actually... i guess a really skinny tie might be more comfortable than a big fat one. i dunno, all my ties are the same skinniness.

I always wear a Double Windsor (http://www.ehow.com/how_15994_tie-double-windsor.html) (that's a link, you know you wanna click it), not a four-in-hand because I hate the asymmetrical "lower-case y" look.
That being said, though, I am EXTRA pissed about the dimple in the tie just under the knot not being right, and yes that bugs me endlessly, I have often adjusted dozens of times in a short period, and not having it JUST right can be offputting to the point of discomfort.

I like neck ties. I wish I had to dress up more often to wear one.

I do notice a difference in the shirts though. They can make the tie so uncomfortable sometimes.

I wear the same knot as well... There's the days where I dont care about the dimple but when it comes to meetings and interviews, it's very important.
For those who work in an office, you know we all have that tie we received as a gift that is just so uncomfortable to wear but you're forced to wear it because it brings a smile to the face of that co-worker who gave it to you.

Ok so PHLIP, if a tie has the ability to bring you to discomfort, wouldn't you agree that a tie CAN be comfortable?

Actually, Chris, the discomfort that comes with that "gift tie" is usually because we feel forced to wear it, or the fact that we do not find the tie attractive, but must wear it in the face of this.
While it CAN bring you discomfort, I am more saying that the "comfort" as you describe it is really not much more than simply being natural, as in not having to think about "that fucking tie."

Fair...
Although I feel the discomfort of the "gift tie" coming from the tie not being of your liking. Nobody knows exactly what you look for in a tie when you buy one. They just think "oh, this one looks nice." Specially women.
And for those who don't wear ties on a daily basis...you wouldn't understand.

do people actually buy suits off the rack and just wear them? I've only had 2 full suits, but they were all tailored to ME. A good fitting light summer suit makes EVERYONE look good.

Ties don't bother me a bit, and it doesn't matter which one I have on. It's the shirt that bugs me. I hate anything that is
tight on my neck, whether it be a button-up dress shirt or regular t-shirt.

the trick is wearing properly sized shirts

also learning how to tie it properly

if a collar is too tight on me i will leave the top unbottoned but since my tie looks so good you can't notice its not buttoned at the top

bam

Tell them to wear a cheap walmart polyester tie one day, and then a nice silk designer tie the next. Then they will understand.

I agree with almost everyone here, its the shirt, not the tie. Over starched shirt or a tough material and it will drive you fucking bananas all day long.

Actually, yes.
I most often buy a suit off the rack, a size too large and have mama bring it down to where I prefer it to be. Beats the hell out of buying one that JUST fits and has pants with thighs that don't quite work right.
Instant tailored suit for less than half what one would cost you, but you MUST have a GREAT seamstress for this to work right, otherwise they will fuck it up.

100% cotton, I am still in love with end-over-end and I hate starch. I know how to iron a shirt, it seems that starching minimizes the life of it. I go to the cleaners with VERY specific instructions - "DO NOT starch, or even press, this shirt. Just clean it and I got it from there."
They look at me like some kind of weirdo, but I am really funny about how my clothes are handled.

I never starch my shirts. Starched collar might look better but I hate how it feels when it rubs on my neck. Floppy collar + tie = no problem.

decent shoes, good pair of jeans, black button up top button undone, and a loose tie that brings out my eyes. never underestimate the power that a tie has over a woman. i catch women watchin me tie my shit on my way to work all the time. its a classy addition to any wardrobe that can be used for some seriously naughty sexy time. up ur game and up ur average gentlemen.

1. Women love the ties.
2. Polyester is your enemy. It doesn't breathe.
3. Buy shirts that are 100% cotton or mostly cotton.
4. 100% Wool Suit and 100% Wool pants. No argument.
5. The top button is what will choke you, not the tie.
6. If the shirt's neck doesn't fit comfortably at the neck, go up a 1/2 size or just buy a different one.
7. Always take your your suits to get tailored.
8. Don't over dry clean. Use a dryclearner that won't leave your stuff super shiny. Usually ones in rich business areas are good. ;) Drycleaners work miracles with white shirts!
9. Don't wear a wifebeater under a shirt. It makes you look like ass when people see the outline.
10. Don't starch.

Speaking of see-through shirts, I really like light-color dress shirts, but I don't like people seeing my nipples. However, I think it looks dumb to wear a shirt underneath, especially when you can see where the sleeves end.
Do you guys wear anything under dress shirts?

What you can do is wear a sleevless under shirt (sometimes called muscle shirt on package) that's heavy cotton. The shirt's seams usually match up to where it ends.

i had to wear a tie everyday to work and i noticed a difference in comfort based on the shirt i wore and the material of the tie that i wore.. my personal preference is softer shirts and softer ties..when i wore a starchy shirt and a tie sometimes it would chaff my neck so that really sucked
