Does anyone here meditate?
I used to think it was super weird and gay because I just couldn't understand how it could possibly help or do anything.
Recently I started taking a world music class and discovered that the Indian music is deeply calming. Whenever I was in class listening to it everything that was bothering me before I went into class kind of didn't matter at least for the time spent in class.
This brought me to the conclusion that maybe trying out meditation in conjunction with the music could be really interesting to say the least. Well I put on some Ravi and just sat in the middle of my pitch black room freshly out of the shower. Focusing at first on the interloping beats of the music and then my mind started doing it's own thing. Visualizing flying through what I can only describe as Aladdin esque landscapes. Coming out of it I felt like I had residual effects of whacky tobacky but I hadn't smoked. My body and mind felt completely lucid and aligned it was really strange.
Now, I don't subscribe to the religous or spiritual aspect of it all (Epicurus kind of sums up my thoughts on all of that ethereal stuff). I'm also not some new wave hippie idealist or anything. I was just kind of left in amazement how when one drifts away and leaves the brain and body to it's own devices it seems to sync you back up with... yourself. I don't do it very often but when I have I was both blown away and weirded out by how right everything felt coming out of the weird trance like state.
Now I often find myself at the computer listening to random raga and mantra mixes and just spacing out.
If you have never done it just try it, and don't go into it with any expectations. Just see if it does anything for you. Most of you are broke and jobless so what else do you have to do?
In any event I thought it was interesting.
