L16, L18, L20B, L24, L24E, L26, L28E, L28ET, LD28... ??????
You question is fairly unspecific and not well thought out.
In the end, damn near ANY engine can be put in ANY chassis with enough work/money.

Yup. If an Rb26DETT can fit...inline 6...I don't see why a L28 wouldn't fit. My question is Why swap with an older motor? Seems back asswards. I see quite a few people with 510's and 240, 260, and 280Z's swapping newer SR's and RB's but no so much old motors into "newer" cars (s14). But hey, to each their own. :)

exactly
(BTW, you forgot the Lizzy, L22/LZ22 ;) , had one in one of my 510 coupes )
If you look through austrainian forums, I am sure you can find plenty of S13's running extremely built up L18's.
I think thats the engine that must work the best.
but as a straight drop in, the power wouldnt be there.
If your looking for a track car, a SR, RB20 or CA all produce about the same power and are around the same price and amount of work.
All three of those engines act completely differently though, so you should research exactly what you would want to match the motor sport of your choice and your driving style.
Though I love the old L series engines, they are over 30 years old and need to be built to compete against todays engines.
Fully built L18 with ITB's would be the only engine I could think might be a good transplant.

Why? Why would you want to do that?

If you have to ask this question you almost certainly shouldn't be attempting to do the swap anyways.

sell your car to someone who knows that answer,
they stopped making datsun-branded cars in what like 86? even if the s14 is an 95 it still isnt something you should do

Try a L28, the inline 6 motors. Maybe you can cut the firewall back a little to make it fit. lol
i keep see'n these post. zilvia keeps growing.....

Many of the Datsun motors that have been brought up were barely rated over 100hp. Aside from some heavy boring and aggressive cams, some people turbo their L series motors. But then you'd want to upgrade it to fuel injection. But at that point, why the FUCK would you want to do it?
I love the sound of dual SU's on a good, strong L motor... But I swapped a KA in my 510 for a reason, and I think Ray can attest that there's a reason he has an SR in his, too....

Why would you want to downgrade?
Quite pointless if you ask me.
While you're at it, why don't you just purchase a horse and have it pull you instead?

i'm getting rid of my L28 asap, I picked up a LS1 which after the swap puts only 30 additional pounds on to the car. i think most L-series are iron block and head, or atleast the block is. there are some bad ass L28's out there but definitly not worth putting in a 240. i saw a guy on another forum was attempting it... i think he scraped the project.

Its cool to be unique but not in this form ..
im not lookign to motorsport my car out just be different and unique
building up a car is what i like and besides i have another car for track use and whatever else i decide to put it through
and the whole datsun with ITB's is what i was gonna do lol
and the motor i have come to buy is perfect checked everything even heard it and drove it in the datsun before he pulled it to drop a V-8 lol in it
i just need to kow if itll fit in an S-14 shell with some/little or no fabbing
i know it seems liek a long shot but im not lookign to race this out my other S-14 is for that cause lol
this is just somethign i figure would be fun/unique/and different
like TheChad said "to each his own"

You COULD just build a Datsun with a Datsun motor in it...
To answer your questions, the amount of work needed to put an L motor into an S chassis depends a lot on what motor you choose. Motor mounts, tranny mount, radiator, fuel delivery, drive shaft, wiring, exhaust would all have to be done, as well as pedal assembly and god knows what else.
In the end, it'd be a lot of work to essentially "dumb down" the car you already have. It's like saying "I could add 1000lbs of useless crap to my car, so I will!"
You're different because you went through with adding 1000lbs of extra weight, but it doesn't make your car any better...

I'd be down to put a l28 in my s13. I think just because I think it would be pretty neat to hear a l28 coming from a 240's exhaust.
that sounded sexy lol
i just wanna do it i can afford to so why not

why itb's why not a carb setup?
yeah im looking around i love itbs too just as much as carbs lol
i just saw a rally spec datsun formthe uk
had like a big valve race head fully balanced crank and 3 carbs 210hp
all motor like wtf lol more then enough to get sideways in a gutted car
carbs are easy to work on too
ericcastro
02-25-2009, 01:49 AM
a set of carbs may run you more than doing your own ITB's.
you would have to check the datsun forums. regular top mount webbers would be a few hundred to several hundred probably, but a good set of large mikuni sidedrafts are still gonna cost alot I would think.
so why not ask your question earlier with the ingine you would be putting in since you know what it is??
well its the 1973 datsun the 2.4L like 151hp and 146 lbs torque
yeah carbs are kinda pricey and itbs are pretty cheap i know a few people that could get me some
but if i did get carbs mikunis would be the ones i would get and a griffin radiator

Just keep the KA and do this to it....It will be cheaper, more reliable and faster than to go the old Datsun motor route..[IMG]http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r224/1five10/JCCS2006033-1.jpg[IMG]
My KA is already gone someone bought it and everyone else is selling theres for way too much like 1500 or 2000 out here its ridiculous
and like i said in a post up above im not looking to race this car already have one for it

The cost of what you want to do is going to add up real fast. The motormounts alone is going to be expensive. Also, I don't think you'll be able to mount a KA tranny on the Datsun motor. KA's sell for about 500-600 bucks out here with tranny. Good luck...
if i could get another Ka i would but im not in cali =(
haha
and if i do get a KA all i need is the motor itself my tranny is still good it just has to be for a 96

if your s14's a 96 then it's obd2 anyways. you would NEVER pass emissions with an L series motor because it isn't obd2.
KA's are not expensive or hard to find motors. if it's really that hard to find a KA then call the shop tomorrow and we'll ship one to you for many many doll-hairs, but i think if you take the time to search you'll find one no problem

You're a moron. In 14 years of working on nothing but 240s I have never seen anyone sell a KA for more than $750. And that was in 1998 on a 6k mile engine.
if i could get another Ka i would but im not in cali =(
haha
They sold KAs outside of California. A lot in fact. I can find a dozen in one phone call.
and if i do get a KA all i need is the motor itself my tranny is still good it just has to be for a 96
Adapting a old ass engine into an OBD-II chassis really is stupid. But you've proven your intelligence already, have at it. It's not like you're the first kid on here to completely ruin a decent car.
Well to solve all problems i ordered a RB26 that will be here in july so =P
but now i need a good cheap Ka to throw in for now hahah and maybe ill juat make it a KA-T

So.... Hold on a sec. You wanted a car to put-put around town in because you already have a track car. To fill the requirement, you wanted an old crappy motor that many of the Datsun guys are swapping out for KA's and SR's... But when that fell through you decided on a RB26..?
But you want to put a KA in it in the mean time.....
Why not just put a KA in it and dump money into your "track car?"
Track car is finished lol and i cant leave my daily sitting in the driveway for its my only street legal car and it didnt fall through i got a deal on an RB from a friend so why not deal was motor harness tranny and everythign else i would need + labor for a good price

The RB still won't pass OBD-II inspection. But have at it.
lol itll pass when you know people lol

That's my car in the picture of the engine install. The car handles very well but I don't race much. I take more satisfaction in building what I want as a personal challange.
For those of you who talk bad about a strong, powerful, reliable, cheap to build, easy to work on, easy to find parts for just about anywhere in the USA, and simple HP engine like the "L", you have no clue what you're talking about. I've built a few "L"s, repaired and modded many so I know what I'm talking about. The name "PALLNET" is known in the first and second generation Z world, my turbo S30 that I sold a few years back didn't have a nice paint job but it was a monster to say the least.
http://album.hybridz.org/data/500/PASS_SIDE_VIEW.jpg
I had most of my $$ invested in suspension and bolt on's but the engine was built for cheap and powerful.
http://album.hybridz.org/data/500/medium/ENGINE_DR.JPG
So I had plenty of spare engine goods laying around the garage and I picked up a very nice S13 2 toned coupe for $500.00 with a horrible rod knock in the stock KA. In my spare time I put the engine together with very little custom fab, the engine sat on stock mounts on a stock RB X-member. Sure my situation was a little different then some who would wonder about installing this engine in the S13, I put it in because I had everything to do the job and I know for a fact that the "L" is a damn good motor. Yes, the "L" turbo sounds FUCKIN AWESOME coming out of my SS N1 3" exhaust.
Not everyone is replacing the "L" with it's younger brother the "RB" and trust me when I tell you that the KA is a damn good motor but no where near the torque as the "L" so that swap don't happen too often.
At the moment the car is running but kinda running flakeing on me because of a failing AFM intake air temp sensor. It's not a big deal though because the EFI and the engine is coming out of the car soon. I have a turbo stroker "L" going into the car with SDS, a nice custom turbo and a Z32 5speed conversion. This car is quick right now and fun but the engine is stock. I'm not sure if it is as quick as my Z used to be but I can tell you it's all the fun of my Z but a nicer ride on our rough shitty streets.
To the guy who wants to put an "L" in your car, just do what you want cause it's your car and you need to make you happy not you trying to make others happy with your car. Below is a few pics and links for you to look at. Email me if you have any questions about the swap I will be more then happy to help you but don't be upset if I don't write back right away cause I have 2 jobs.
