View Full Version : Turbo Smoking

Was at Drift Nirvana this weekend and my turbo was smoking more then usual. Originally I thought this was a possible seal issue because it only smokes (blue) when I'm idling. Once I'm on throttles it goes away.

But when I was waiting for my turn to run I noticed the turbo only smokes at idle, and while on inclines. The steeper the incline the worse the smoke. Does this indicate a different issue beyond seals that I should be looking at? Or am I just thinking too much.

Thanks :P

Do you have an EGT?

it will smoke worse on inclines because theres more load on the engine. There fore more load no the turbo. So whe it's working harder, it smokes more. I don't know.

Possible oil drain issue.

is the smoke coming directly from the turbo?

Check to make sure rear main seals are not going out. At idle, the vaccum is higher than at open throttle, so you pressure is lower. When the engine is idling, the turbo's seals are naturally prone to heavier load, though no boost is relevant. When in throttle, your turbo is pushing that settling oil through, so of course no obvious "blue" smoke kicking or billowing out from the turbo, also check any loose bolts around the snell bolts at the turbine, not the compressor. are you having any boost creep issues when entering boost ranges?
