i dont know how much paint to get for my car. Im not needing a full detailed list of materials, but more of how much.
how much base coat is needed to cover a stock s14? Door jambs, under hood, and under trunk. Will one gallon mixed be enough?
Since this is my first paint job, will one gallon of clear be enough? Im sure im going to get orange peel like crazy, and im thinking ill be wet sanding the clear to get rid of the orange peel. So should i get a little more than a gallon?
my question seems pretty vague to me, so if there is any more specifics thats needed to help you guys help me then lmk.

That depends on a lot of things, are you doing a color change, what brand of paint used, are you doing the inside/engine bay/ door jambs etc, what color etc.
If you can anwser these questions i can give you a general idea as i just painted my s14, also check my thread theres alot of good info there.

The car is originally red, then painted rustoleum white on the outside and doorjambs for temporary because of an accident that happened where the guy didn’t have insurance. Now its going back red. Basically I want to paint the out side till it reaches a point where you cant tell I stopped at, so just the door jambs ( till it reached under the interior panels/carpet), under the hood ( new hood is different color) and under the trunk ( trunk is a different color),
All products are Southern Polyurethanes, inc.
Strip to metal>black epoxy primer>fill dents> 2k high build grey primer> reduced white epoxy for sealer> Spi red or ppg redline red> Spi Universal clear
Everything is mixed 1:1 except the 2k primer 4:1
I think ill end up using the chromabase basecoat if they have redline red. I would rather have reline red (350z), but the SPI red is kinda close, but not quite.
Anymore information needed? I know you didn’t need all of what I said, but I just thought id try and be a little more specific.
gsracer: im reading your thread and their is alot of information that answered some of my questions that i wont need to ask. thanks for taking the time to make it.

A gallon would be more than enough, half gallon at the most unreduced. Depending on color....

Well this is what i would do..
First off skip going to bare metal its a waste of time and materials.
1. guide coat and Block the car with 80 grit to flatten it and remove all the rustoleum crap
2. Fill dents
3. 2k high fill primer blocked with 180 grit, then reprime block with 320 and finish off with 500
4. reduced epoxy for a sealer ( lightest color avialable so your red base will cover well)
5. B/C then C/C
As for the spi stuff, dont believe all the hype you read, Dont get me wrong its a decent product and I havent personally used it but i have been told by numerous people who have used it, not to mention unless you can get it locally I wouldnt for go it because Nothing sucks more then realizing in the middle of something you need a quart more of said product and you have to order it from somewhere.
I am very extremly happy with my dupont paint job.
I would go with
Nason Ful poxy ( dupont shopline epoxy primer) i think it was like 50 for a half gallon which is more than you need.
Nason 2k primer surfacer is like 32 and change per quart with the hardner, youd probably need close to 2 quarts
Dupont activated chromabase is probably gonna run you close to 400 for the gallon and activator
And Chromaclear, the g27779s which is what i used is 140 for the gallon and hardner which makes 1.25 gallons sprayable.
Now for your s14 it will probably take about a gallon to a gallon and a quart sprayable to have just a bit left over. Always buy more incase you have to make repairs.
My only advice is dont waste your time priming things that done need to be primed. For example If the fenders are in good shape skip the heavy grit stuff and just block the factory finish and epoxy over it when you paint. Its a waste of time and material. Your never gonna get better adhesion then factory coatings IMO.
Well thats what i would do.
