take the fuel pump and sending unit out of the tank and see what's up

i tried that..i just looked at it, and seemed fine. guess i should test it with a voltmeter.

How low is your car? It's possible that you're rubbing on the wiring harness that rest just above the driver's side wheel. Behind the splash guard. Check the wheel well for rubbing.
Doesn't take long for the tire to rub one out.... heh...rub...

Common for other electrical problems, but highly unprobably for fuel gauge problem being how the fuel gauge sensor wire runs from the back of the car to the body harness that goes INSIDE the car and up to the cluster.
Common problem with S cars.
Like said above, remove the fuel pump and check the float.

Ah, good catch.
It was early when I posted that. Dont know what I was thinking.
Wierd you say it's a common S chassis problem. I never had any problems with my fuel gauges, and this is my 6th 240.
Oh well, must be coincidence with the suspension work.

actually its very likely that if he was rubbing through the harness that some wires grounded out and blew fuses to cause the gauge not to work...so his pump and float could be working perfectly fine but it wouldnt matter if the fuse is blown to the gauge...and it only makes sense thats why it happened since he said it was right after he got done installing coilovers
check the harness, repair any wires that may be exposed or touching each other (get ur minds out of the gutter), then tuck the harness up and secure it, so it doesnt rub....then check all ur fuses in the kick panel and in the engine bay by the battery

I would use a Multi-meter and use the Ohmmeter function and measure the resitance on the two wire input.
It is a 0~70 Ohm gauge. I bet you have a short or open somewhere. I can't recall if 0 Ohms is full or empty. I want to say it is full but I am not sure.
You'll need to check continuity through the wires from the back of the cluster to the plug at the tank if you cant find the problem through other methods.
Good luck.

For S13, the fuel gauge shares power and ground with the tach, speedo, and temp gauge.
If you blow a fuse, none of those things would work.
If the tach, speed, and temp work, then the power and ground to the fuel gauge are good.
The only thing left would be the signal wire, float, or the actual gauge cluster itself.

I had the same problem and still do. But I fixed it twice and im not touching it again and its still broke. Take your pump out and you will see that a contact moves with the float. It presses against a pad that has contacts. Bend the contact so it puts more pressure against the pad. That will fix the problem but for how long is the question. Mine lasted a week until I went drifting and it stopped working again.

ill def check everything out tomorrow since i have all day.
going to check the floater again & check fuses.
i did rub 2 wires under the fender. im guessin thats what caused a short somewhere.
before this problem, the only thing that worked was the fuel, temp, and speedo (which i dont think was accurate at all). tach didnt work because its still sohc cluster. (Sr swap) ..but now the only one that works is the temp.
