View Full Version : SR20DET won't start

So, I recently did a headgasket on my SR20DET. I finished up, and the engine started on the first crank. It ran for a bit, then I noticed oil leaking around the spark plug gaskets. I shut it down, pulled the coilpacks and the plugs. Unfortunately, this caused the oil that had collected around the spark plugs to run down into the cylinders.

I got new gaskets, and installed them, but the engine won't start now. The 7.5A EGI fuse was blow, I replaced it with a 10A fuse that isn't blowing anymore.

The engine cranks and cranks, and will occasionally make a loud POP sound, like a backfire, but the engine never catches.

Flooded with gas?
Flooded with oil?

ideas?

Take out the EGI Fuse and crank the engine for a id say for 2 sets of 10 turns.

Replace the EGI Fuse and try again.

Tried this, it'll fire once maybe each set of 10 seconds of cranking. It's a really loud pop when it does fire, like it's backfiring.

It'll fire about once every 3-4 cranking sessions. I've tried EGI fuse in, out, injectors unplugged, etc.

I've checked the relevant fuses under the dashboard. The fuel pump primes, and teh exhaust pipes smell of fuel.

How do I pull codes?

Pull a plug and check it.

Pull a plug and check it.

Done, looks fine, no oil or gas. Color is black though, like extreme soot build up.

My check engine light never comes on, even with the engine off and key on.

How can I pull codes without a working engine light?

I hate the previous owner. So much.

Do you have a DVOM? Hook up the 10A ammeter to the EGI fuse slot and try starting. If you blew a 7.5A and not a 10A fuse, your ammeter will be ok. If you read anything higher than 7.5A, then you can trace that down (you might have a short somewhere). Also, I wouldn't recommend using a 10A fuse. If you don't have a DVOM, just hook up another 7.5A fuse and if that blows, you have a short.

Theres a forum here on "how to's" look for the code reading with your ECU. You have to turn the dial all the way to the left then all the way to the right. but the thread is under SR20DET faq's. might help you out a bit.

MAn all these threads about SRs not starting. Kinda getting me worried about mine. Once the fuses are switched, crank the engine with the pedal to the floor. Its called clear flood mode and its just incase you flooded the engine.

Replaced ignitor, coil packs, and spark plugs. Same symptoms, no start, occasional backfire.

Ideas? Am I missing anything besides the ECU? The coilpacks have ground and power.

Replaced coilpack subharness, no change. Also, if i unplug the ignitor and crank, I get code 21. Otherwise, I get code 55 (no issues).

This is driving me crazy.

Its probably the code for when you unplug it. If you are positive you have fuel, and your positive you have spark; which both are pulsing. Then maybe you cam timing is off? or you have a big leak somwhere, but i doubt its these two.

I don't have spark, that is the problem... but I don't know why.

ok, now I have spark, at least on cylinder 1, but still no start. ideas?

I rotated the CAS by hand, and I get spark and I hear the injectors clicking. In fact, it fired once while I was rotating the CAS by hand.

CAS was set 180 degrees off, on TDC exhaust stroke. Swapped it to TDC compression, problem solved.
