Hey guys first post. WOOhoo. So i finally got a 92 RPS13 dual cam and the whole top end was torn apart. The owner told me that the timing chain had broken and that he replaced the top timing chain but not the bottom one. Anyhow. I spun the crank 3 or four times to check and see if the chain would fall off. I mean if a timing chain breaks then it physically falls off the cog and a link breaks correct?? Why is it that my chain stays on if it's broken? Also I was looking at the plugs and they have dark black on them and fresh oil. But I moved the car around alot so that's my theory of how oil go there. any help would be great. I just need to get this bad boy running so I can start saving up for the sr20 swap. Thank you!
the timing chain you're turning is the upper timing chain.. the one he said he replaced.
if he just replaced it.. why would it be broken? :bash:
from what you said the bottom one is the broken one just taking the valve cover off you won't be able to see the lower one well.
I think your a bit confused on the timing chains.. hopefully this picture will help you out.

as for the spark plugs.. where is the oil? on the tip or where it connects to the spark plug wires?

My spark plugs were submerged in oil b4 too. My solution was to get a new vlave cover gasket including the middle spark plug gasket. They are two speratley sold gaskets. Use a turkey baster http://faculty.ccp.edu/faculty/dreed/campingart/jettatech/bleeder/ist2_1078991_turkey_baster.jpg syphon the oil out. If the baster is too big add a vacuum line to it to reach to the oil. once all oil is out take your valve cover off and put in the new vlave cover gaskets. Hope this helps you out.

Thanks for the help guys I will definitely try the turkey baster thing. Although if it's a gasket what do I need a turkey baster for???
Ok and an update on the chain.
I spoke with the owner. What happened exactly was the top chain broke, so he decided to replace the top chain but not the bottom one. SO his explanation is that once he put it all back together the top chain was tight and it being brand new wore out the bottom chain so now I need to replace the bottom chain. My question is. If i replace the bottom chain should I go through the trouble of replacing the top one again??

turkey baster = to get the oil
spark plug gasket = to seal the spark plug hole from letting more oil enter.
I don't see why you would replace the upper if it's new, just replace the lower timing chain.

But if the oil is in the chamber doesn't it go down into the pistons and back into the pan???

Holy crap...no...you do not want oil in your combustion chambers. It won't drain down from on top of the pistons and cause you more problems than you want to know. Get that oil out of the spark plug bores ASAP. Replace your valve cover gaskets.

^^^WORD! It can cause massive problems. It's super easy to do as well. dont forget to put silicone on the new gasket before you put it on.

Wait wait wait wait... You say you bought an RPS13 with a KA?
That doesn't make any sense...

Well a hatch style. I thought that's what it meant. I think it's a RHS13?? anyways. we started to take off the chain and couldn't get the front cover off. My friends said that there is some sort of oil pickup there that won't let it off. Well we started to take the pan off by loosening up the motor mounts but it didn't want to come off. anyways we decided that the motor has 160,000 miles and if we are already here we might as well do a whole tear down. So I'm ordering the gasket kit from thenismoshop.com, and some piston rings, and possibly a clutch depending on what it looks like when we get there. I didn't really want to go through this because I wanted to do an sr swap in a couple of months when I could finally save up some cash but oh well if it saves me from constantly breaking down then I guess it's worth it maybe I'll just go KA-T now. my question to you guys is is there something else I should take care of that's not uber expensive. Unfortunately I wasn't planning on doing this but I'm here now. Any info would be great. Thanks!!

make sure you RTV the lower timing cover correctly, and wait for the RTV to dry properly for that particular area. Get the "ultra grey" RTV, it has a tensile strength of 377 psi and hardness (shore A) 45. It is the strongest stuff out of all the Permatex shit out there.
The rest is easy if you have a FSM.

Question. THe motor has 160,000 miles can I get away with using the stock bearings?
