Hey everyone Im very sorry for starting a new thread, but I did a lot of searches and couldn't find the answer.
So could anyone chime in or direct me to a link on how to disable the vvt on a blacktop sr20det?
Reason is because it is awfully noisy, and I wanted to try to disconnect it to make sure that it is the source of the noise.
Thank you

You tried disconnecting the plug off the sensor?

Could you tell me or show a picture where it is located?

272 cams
that is the best way
no but really, there is a big, huge sensor that plugs into the side of the head, right next to the intake manifold.

This completely overpasses vvt?
Ill definitely consider this option, but I can't afford that at the moment, and I also need to know how to temporarly disable the vvt to rule out the noise Im hearing.
cheers

why do you want to disconnet it?
it works great,
btw its VCT
Variable CAM timing
anyway, it gives better low to mid range power for easier driveability.
however id rip it out if your going to tune your car with big fu-k off cams :D

Define the noise please. If the noise is a continous rattle, then unplugging the VTC solenoid will do nothing. Your problem could be the VTC Sprocket, which will need to be replaced with a new one. They are known to go due to many reason, one could be low oil pressure, 2nd could be just basic wear and tear. If you want to completely elimnate this VTC while upgrading cams you'll have to install S13 cam (on the intake side) along with a S13 Sprocket w/bolt. Some cams are NVCS safe which allows you to retain the VTC, HKS, GReddy, and Tomei offer cams that allows you to keep the VTC. Quite honestly driving the car without the VTC sucks balls especially on the streets. If you want crazy top end and mainly for drag racing then VTC isn't really required. Fliprayzin240sx will always bash how bad the VTC and how useless it is, as i've seen from his previous posts, but everyone has their own opinion especially when it comes to driveability.

It's actually VTC and it is Valve Timing Control.
I wouldn't disconnect/disable the VTC unless you're upgrading to cams that are incompatible with the system. It helps low end torque and continues out to over 5000 RPM, so this will be a big chunk of your torque throughout that RPM. This also would increase the RPM at where you reach full boost.
I have no 'noise' coming from my VTC and I have chosen to wire it in an use it with my Standalone as well. The noise could very easily be coming from your upper timing guide underneath the valve cover.

Hey everyone, so I disabled it and took the car for a test drive, the noise is still there, so I connected it back.
The noise im experiencing is kind of like a high pitched rattle that sounds pretty random, and it happends between about 4800-7000 rpm.
I was thinking it could be a rattle coming from inside the dash at that certain rpm? but I definitly not know that for sure.
I'd appreciate if someone could try to help me out, the noise kind of comes on and off very quickly for random lenghts of time, is that what it would sound like if it was a vct problem? or would it be continious?

have some one stand out side, and drive by them in that rpm range.
also, does it only do it under load, or will it do it free revving. If it makes the sounds free reving, stand there and rev the motor off the throttle body and see if you can pin point the location.

So clarify this, I have a set of s13 272's sitting and I have a s15 sr in the car, if I drop the s13 cams in I'll lose the VTC ? I've read on this forum that I need to cam gears ?
Z33dori
02-10-2009, 02:17 AM
you will need the s13 intake cam gear.
tho i'm not 100% sure if S13 cams fit s14/15... but i don't see why they wouldn't

For Tomei, they have different part numbers for S13 and S14 cams. However, there is only one part number for the cam sprocket.

s13 cam gear fits, correct.

Excuse me? How did I bash it on this thread, hell, did you even read what I typed up?!?! :mepoke:
Well since you brought it up, i hate on it due to a couple of things. Most of them go bad. If you have one in the states, have you looked at how much these fuckers are to replace? Thats if you can even find them...
For as much money you'd spend to fix the fucking thing, your better off spending that money on upgrading something else.
I dont go around telling people to get rid of it when they work perfectly fine now do I?!?!
you will need the s13 intake cam gear.

You can use S13 cams, most aftermarket VTC cams made for S14/15s have lower lift than their S13 counterparts. That would be the main advantage of going with S13 aftermarket cams, gives you the option to run more aggressive cam setups.

Okay so I took a pretty extensive test drive and here is what happens:
The noise only appears in 1st and 2nd gear with heavy load, so if I only give it just over half throttle the engine will rev up through the rev range with no noise, so it only happens with heavy load, and when going through the other gears no noise either.
When free revving in neutral no noise either.
I am extremely puzzled, any help would be very appreciated.

Knock??
I had a friend with a similar issue
around 3.5-4K around crusing throttle he would get audiable knock until he pulled 5* timing
ukyo01
02-10-2009, 04:42 PM
It is not a knock, its more of a very rapid rattle almost a buzz?
Z33dori
02-10-2009, 08:05 PM
it could still be knock, just light amount really fast.
but the buzzing makes me think diff. you might just have a loss stud/nut or something. it's really hard to say. u think u can make a vid?

If you have a noise and its coming from the head doesnt that mean maybe bad valvetrain? Guides, Seats, seal idk. You usually hear tapping form lack of oil. But if its really loud, im not sure what it could be.

Its really hard to explain this noise, ill make a video and post it as soon as I can
ukyo01
02-15-2009, 11:25 PM
okay so I still dont have my camera so I wasnt able to make a video.
But I was thinking, the noise only appears under full throttle, so I was wondering if it could be the turbo?
There is absolutely no noise unless I don't give it a WOT.
So I guess my question is, if there was too much play in the turbo or whatever other problem it could have, would it be possible that the noise would only be audible under full boost?

take your car to a dyno. Whatever it is, it isn't your VTC.

What kind of diagnosis can be done on a dyno? since I know it can be a little pricey
DJ_Sunrise
02-16-2009, 03:48 PM
Nah, not expensive at all. What state do you live in? I recommend going to a shop that has a dyno and seeing what they charge. When they strap that car on, you can play with the gas and see where the noise is coming from, since the dyno will simulate load. It has to spin a giant cylinder after all. Think about that for a sec. Since you can't have anyone sitting in your engine bay while you are driving down the street...
For example, RT Tuning in PA charges $60 for 3 runs w their wideband O2. So how much can a shop charge for diagnosing a noise? Only take a few minutes. If you're a customer at a shop, most will do it free. None should charge you more than $50 for playing with the throttle on a dyno..
You could also put the ass in the air, car in gear, and play with it while it's in the air, but I really don'y recommend it.

Okay so I did some diagnosing, and I found the source of the noise, I listened to it with a stethoscope and its definitely coming from the circled area.

So what can it be? I was thinking maybe the chain is hitting the chain guide?
Anyone have any idea? and how would I go about fixing this.
Thanks for any input you have.

Yea, very very likely.
Remove valve cover, remove two 12mm bolts and it comes off. Re-install Valve Cover. Done.

are you saying the chain guide is unnecessary?
ukyo01
02-21-2009, 10:08 AM
Is it safe to remove the chain guide on the very top? or perhaps a new tentioner will make the chain tighter and will prevent the chain from hitting the guide?
Thanks for the input

Safe to remove the one on the top between the cams. If the chain hits the valve cover after this you need a new tensioner and possibly a timing chain job/kit.

Okay I'll remove that tentioner and see if it the noise goes away, and if it does ill keep a close ear to hear if it starts hitting the valve cover after a while.
Thanks everyone for your help, ill be back with updates.

No, remove the guide on top between the cams, not the tensioner.

no no dont worry im not gonna take no tentioner off :P
I was told by someone its not safe to remove the guide because it keep the chain from skipping?
anyone can confirm this?

If it helps you any the KA and SR from the MCS14(Kouki) do not have them on the engines exactly because of this problem.

Good to know, because when I took off the valve cover and removed the chain guide to take a look at it you could see the lines that the chain embedded into the guide, I ordered a new tentioner and Ill see if it fixes the problem, if it doesnt then Ill probably take it off.
Thanks so much for the info, and I'll be back with updates.
Cheers
