View Full Version : Q45 brake upgrade

Sup guys. Tagged along with my friend to the local salvage yard, and scored a set of Q45 front calipers (they had a TON of Q45s with good calipers, BTW) and rotors. Took the rotors to be resurfaced cause they showed NO signs of wear... just a little surface rust... So I'm gonna rebuild them and try to install them tonight. I got to thinking, though... what about rear brakes? Are there any bigger brakes (other than Z32) I can use? I didn't look much at the Q45s cause I was busy trying to find a 6 bolt J30 VLSD.

Thanks

Most people say if you upgrade the fronts you must upgrade the rears to keep the bias

correct, i read in another thread about this ill try to find it and post it up.

Edit: here is the thread look at the 4th post!

hope this helped!!

I've always heard keep the rear brakes stock. If you have an S13, I would suggest using a Z31 BMC, it really balances the bias out.

Apparently, if you read into it, the bias is controlled independently of the volume of the caliper cylinders so you retain stock bias no matter what.

I don`t think that`s the case though. My rear wheels with stock brakes lock up faster than the fronts with q45 brakes. Or so it seems, anyway..

This is because you have more braking power up front, creating a greater amount of forward weight distribution. Without that weight on the rears, your tires have less traction and thus they lock up easier.

Either way, a heavy S14 needs bigger brakes, so either I gotta find better rears or just bite the bullet and go Z32.

it doesn't "need" bigger brakes unless you're on the track

and even then, s14 stock brakes with aggressive pads and new rotors and fluid and good tires will do a decent job

amen to that. exactly what he said. i only upgraded to some j30's fronts but the q45's aren't that much bigger and unless you go z32 or have a lot of power..you'll be fine..i mean usually you wana keep your ratio to what its supposed to be..im pretty sure 80% up front and 20% in the rear for disk brakes anyone correct me if im wrong..but just get some ceramic pads, some good rotors and tires and you'll be fine homie. :D
