View Full Version : Skull And Bones KA Oil Adaptor Block - Introductory Group Buy
ManoNegra
01-24-2009, 02:33 PM
WHAT IS IT?
The first oil block for the DOHC KA that allows for a proper oil cooler/relocation set up.
These pieces have been in development for a couple of months
by myself and Mike, my close friend who runs the machine shop where we both work at.
He's the guy that actually did the tough work designing, programming and developing these pieces,
I just helped where I could (There, happy Mike?).
We worked late hours and weekends, sweated blood (true story) trying to make
something that we personally would want to have in our cars.
Hope that we've succeed.

Looking at the pics won't the 3 1/8 NPT ports be blocked when the -8 fittings are screwed in?

Looking at the pics won't the 3 1/8 NPT ports be blocked when the -8 fittings are screwed in?
They don't actually, that's just one of the details we
had to find solutions to while developing these
if I get a close up pic I'll post it
a picture of the port with the -8 fitting would clear this concern up
ManoNegra
01-24-2009, 05:35 PM
More pictures showing fittings and ports relation
plus installed fitment have been added as requested
The first handful of units have been sold
giving us some cash to buy more material and parts
another batch will be ready is about a month's time
anyone that wants one either PM me or post to this thread
and I'll get a list started

It looks like 1/3 of the 1/8 NPT fittings gets covered up. I'm not sure the inner diameter of the 1/8 NPT but, wouldn't that restriction cause less oil to go into the turbo? Also, wouldn't it read oil pressure incorrectly since the sender would be located after the restriction?
SoBay240guy
01-25-2009, 11:10 AM
A 1/8 NPT (national pipe thread) port is designed to be used with 1/8" Pipe or equivalent sized hose, as you can see far more than a 1/8" diameter is left uncovered. It's also worth noting most turbo feed lines get a .060" diameter restrictor in them to limit pressure, atleast all of mine have.
As far as the sender goes there will be no pressure difference either since there will be no flow through that port regardless.

do you have a picture of this installed in the bay? im curious to see how & where you ran the lines. Im just trying to see if it will look right in my bay, since im doing a full tuck right now. Also this could be used in conjunction with the Greddy Sr oil filter relocation kit correct? i mean if we wanted to make it a little easier for doing oil changes lol, not that the filter is that hard to change.

These sort of things are not very difficult to make
the real question is whether enough people would want
them to make it worth the time to make them
machine time is pretty expensive and we already have
a couple of other cool things we want to make next
but, like I told fromxtor, I'll run it by Mike and if time allows who knows...

Update:
- Cut about half the stock before the blade on the saw decided it had enough
- Finished final details on CAD program
- Got tooling and CNC set up sorted out
- Only had to adjust the depth of a chamfer and spindle speed for a tap operation that resulted in a broken tap
- have 5 pieces ran (and running the 6th as I type) through the first phase

We both put in 40 "extra" hours this week (we already work 40-50 hour weeks) All after 6PM and on the weekend. This should have taken much longer, We are both feeling it this morning.
I can see that our work is appreciated, Thanks to everyone who shared kind words (and all the pre-payers) <---they kept us full of Monsters and paid for materials and tooling.
We will finish de-burring today and send to anodize today or tomorrow. and i'll slip the guy an extra $20 so he hurrys them through.

parts are pretty much done - de-burred, re-tapped, veritexed, ultrasonic cleaned and

they're pretty expensive
we aren't completely happy with the finish on them
they're expensive
they came with the wrong hex pattern
they're expensive
so
we're going to try to make them
going to spend a few days on them (we're still ahead of schedule)

various ways to do it, some lines are made specifically for turbos and will have it built in
there are restrictors that bolt to the turbo itself

got mine today! just about to install it right after this post.
ty Juan & Mike!
General pointers for installation.
Be sure to coat the o-rings within the center bore of the adapter with eng. oil prior to installation so that they are not damaged.
When using existing oil adapter bolts, make sure flat washers are used between the adapter and lock washer on the bolt. This is to ensure no damage to the aluminum occurs while tightening the bolts/lock washer against the adapter.
Use your favorite thread sealer when screwing :boink: the oil pressure sending unit or other components in the adapter.
Base gaskets (adapter to engine gasket) are okay but I prefer using hi-temp silicone for sealing most surfaces. If using no gasket, be sure not to over/under apply the amount of hi-temp sealer. A 1/8" (approx. 3mm) bead is plenty (note to Juan/Mike: a thin shallow groove machined into the base of the adapter will promote sealer stability.)

3mm) bead is plenty (note to Juan/Mike: a thin shallow groove machined into the base of the adapter will promote sealer stability.)
yeah, we thought about putting a small groove there
but decided at the end to leave the same as the oem design
got it today
thanks
looks awesome
now i need another 240

I'm interested in acquiring one of these.
Are all 3 sensor ports NPT? I noticed on the SOHC picture they had the OEM bspt psi sensor in the center port.

hmmm.... ok from now on packages are to be opened only
if a KMFM or Mindless Self Indulgence album is playing in the background.
ok, this will probably be the final update since the GB is about to end
currently we have 15 anodized and 3 bare pieces left
with about 8 guys saying they want one
we will make more but it will depend on work schedule
or whether we're busy with another project
so we can't say for sure when or in what quantities
so PM Mano if you want one
since it may be a while till more are made once these are gone
lastly we want to say thanks to all of the people that bought one
after a brief sabbatical (we need to build a KA)
we will start working on the next project
keep an eye out for it, we think some of you will find it interesting

I PMed ManoNegra about it a few weeks ago. The KA and RB filter tree looks similar but concluded that the RB mounting "tabs" are positioned differently. So I would think it would be very easy to modify the original design for an RB25/26 application. :bigok:

It's easy, the 1/8 ports are on the oil return to the block which is sealed with o-rings.
that and the block will only bolt on one way.

??? What ???
I meant which -8an has the oil comin out to the filter, and which goes back into the block

look at the way the port for that AN fitting flows. One side will flow out towards the oil filter and one will flow in towards the motor.
Silverstreek
04-24-2009, 10:43 AM
yeah, i'm sorta confused on this as well.
is the out to the filter port the one with the extra ports for sensors/lines or is it the other one thats below it? maybe in future one's, little arrows or an "o" for out and and "i" for in or something to make it really really simple. not that this is rocket science....
Adikt
04-24-2009, 01:05 PM
I'd take it off and look but its bolted to the motor
atown 240
04-24-2009, 01:55 PM
u dont need to take it off. Just look at it with ur oil filter off. U'll see a port coming from either the top or bottom and u can tell which way it flows.
SoBay240guy
04-24-2009, 08:31 PM
didn't think it'd be too hard to tell...
let's try it again
the AN fitting on the side the 1/8 npt ports are is the return to the block
car takes pressure/temp readings from the "clean" oil returning to the block from the filter/cooler.
hope that clears it up.

i finally got around to gathering up the parts to install this thing. i'm putting an autometer oil temp gauge also. the sender on the temp gauge has a long probe that hits the fitting. any suggestions from the experts here? i could cut back or turn down the fitting so it clears but then the sender would be right in the oil flow path. what about a different fitting, or a 1/8th to 1/8 extension like this. but i'll likely have to drill that out.
