so im getting a really good deal on a redtop sr20 from a friend.
he got the motor with a trade for some wheels by his good friend who rebuilt the motor. it has ( as he says) hks cams, hks rocker arm stoppers, a fresh head and block, new timing chain, fresh turbo side, ported intake manifold and a megan turbo elbow. so i want to ask what can i look at to make sure its been built right. motor has 0 miles. no oil in the motor and its never been tunred on.

you wont till u can start it up, because if your asking, internet wont tell you exactly how . unless you pull it and measure stuff, u wont know.

i wouldnt risk it, personally, unless you REALY trust the person!

Yeah I 2nd that. It's risky stuff if your not best buds with the guy. You could drop it in and find out it's knocking on start up or only got 100 miles before it's ready to die. Ask for receipts if he had machine work done to it. I know I save all that stuff.

he has receipts for everything. and i know the dude thats selling it to me not the one who built the motor. and my friend knows the dude who built the motor personally and says its good. but thats all talk.

It's a gamble and you might win or lose you never really know. Feeling lucky?

not really. it was either this or a ka-t setup on my existing motor. i did a comp check on it and i have 160 psi down the line. it runs good just has a couple bolts on the vc stripped and a broken distributor bolt and a 3rd gear grind. i just want something reliable to daily drive and occasionally beat at drift events.

I wouldn't buy it. Every time I get something that is "rebuilt" it usually isn't and grenades on me. In fact the last one I bought is going to earn the seller an ass kicking if he doesn't come through with a replacement.

In case anyone is searching for this topic...don't ever buy someone else's rebuild. You never know how your engine/trans is put together unless you do it yourself. An expensive lesson to learn.

first ask him which hks cams are in there, then call up hks and ask them what markings are on those cams, then open the valve cover, and look at them to see if they match up. also if you can take a pic with a digi cam, a good one, and post it up here, and we'll tell you what we think

also if there is no oil in it, and has no miles on it, you will know as soon as you pop the valve cover cause all that stuff on the valvetrain side would look clean and new

check all seals, drop the oil pan and check the bottom end of the block for burned on or caked on oil, pull valve cover and check for burned on oil. when rebuilding they should hot tank it, so it should look really clean, lastly spin the motor by hand to make sure it spins
