sounds like there is a monkey in your trunk.
go under your car...check the support for the drive shaft. towars the middle of the driveshaft there should be the support held with 2 blots...mine was loose and it was making that rumbling sound. hope this helps

What year is your car?? How many miles on it?? Stock suspension or aftermarket?? Under heavy acceleration & braking, do you hear thumping?? It's possible it could be your rear subframe bushings going out. This usually affects S14 models...not sure about S13's though...

PS:
How are your tires?? Are they properly inflated?? Balanced?? Properly tightened to the hub...Rear wheel bearings could be going out also but the noise would be more constant, that is, if it's not your drive shaft or differential...

hmm i would sheck out the carrier bearing. i would start there and work your way back to the diff, and or subframe bushings checking for looseness of soemthing

So when you mash on the gas pedal you hear the noise eh? Is it constant or is it just for a second or two?? If it was your driveshaft, you would hear it all the time and the noise would get louder as you accelerated. The differential would do the same. When was the last time you serviced your differential?? Maybe you're low on oil in your diff or the oil needs to be changed on your diff. You the original owner?? How well do you maintain the car??
A way to test for bad subframe bushings is to take the car to a long empty street with NO potholes somewhere in the middle of the night. Slowly accelerate your car to about 25-30 miles. While keeping your speed constant, oscillate / modulate your gas pedal several times in rapid succession. If your car starts jerking & thumping then chances are it's your subframe bushings. Fixing the problem is pretty easy.....
