Anyone know if this knob fits 240sx without any problems? I mean, I'm sure the threading would be correct... but what about height? I have a Nismo sold shift, if that matters (shouldn't)

Hmm, Im not sure you could find one that would fit unless you get factory. All of the guys that take theres off usually have to beat them to a pulp to get them loose :P I forget what they use, but most Z owners that take them end up screing them over :(

Yeah I was referring to a new 300zx shift knob.

I think it'd fit, but wonder if anyone here has done it. I'm considering the black-thread knob, the red is nice but won't match my new shift boot.

Huh?
That'd be kinda cool too, 'cept for the 6 speed markings on top and the way it flares out at the base.

Also, to me anyway, the 350z knob sorta looks... well, like a "full sac" ... that's all I'm sayin' :)

It's too funny. The problem is that a lot of early Z owners used threadlock or loctite to secure their shift knobs, only to find out later that they had fux0red themselves over when it came time to replace a shift boot or bushing, or anything else that required removal of the knob. Sometimes the knob just oxidizes a little bit and so it can be a b*tch to remove. When I first got my Z, the leather wrap on the knob was in terrible condition and so I bought a j-spec (red-stitched) knob off of another forum member (since Courtesy was selling them for about $80 at the time  ).

I recently field stripped what I could from the carcass of a Z that was used as a donor to replace my rear passenger quarter panel (lady driver didn't think to look before pulling out of a sidestreet = t-boned Z  ) and I really wanted to swipe the shifter, but needed to remove the knob to get it out. The previous owner of that car must have used a bottle of loctite, and after I had finally manhandled it free and nearly given myself a hernia, I was amazed by how much loctite had been used.

Some neat tricks to keep in mind if you get the leather stock 300ZX knob:
1. - do not use loctite or threadlocker! <- very important
2. - to get the knob aimed correctly and set firm, take some paper or paper towels and wad it up and stuff it all the way into the very top of the shift knob. this will provide some pressure on the threads to hold it firmly in place, but it also wont "lock" it in place. it is also handy to line it up since you can just add more or less paper.
3. - if you can't get the knob off for some reason (loctite anyone?), take a towel or a thick rag to wrap around the knob and use a pair of vice grips or channel locks to get a good grip and leverage on the knob without digging into it and tearing it apart. this doesnt guarantee that you cant still possibly damage the knob, but it should minimize any possible damage.

I'll check tomorrow to see if it will fit. I have one for my Z that I haven't installed yet and I was wondering the same thing. Should only take 5 mins to find out.

It'll fit. I have had one on my S13 for a couple of years now.

You'll need to do something for the boot to make it look right. The base on the Z knob is a lot thicker than that on the S13/S14 knob.

What I did is as follows. I just cut a little bit of the boot, at the top, so it could fit around the bottom of the Z knob. Then, I folded that inside, under itself, so only the facing of the boot is facing out. I just pulled that up above the base of the Z knob. It looks pretty good.

If that doesn't make any sense now, you'll figure it out when you get to it.
