View Full Version : Intercooler help
Is there any ruling on where it must be placed?
does it need cool air?
does it need high air pressure?
so theres smic and fmic, from what i understand.. the ARC sidemount (i have) is like the beast of all sidemounts.. but what does it top off at as far as boosting.. is it stable at 1bar? 1.5bar?
anyway, my question is that if i get a fmic which is bigger, can i mount it anywhere?
basically i got other ideas after seeing that 93 sr vert for sale.. just wondering what the rules are, havent found anything really helpful using google.

**i was going to try mount my intercooler in between the motor n radiator.. so it would be.. motor, intercooler, radiator, condenser, dual fan's which blow back toward the motor.. bascially take flex-a-lites and switch the wires so it blows instead of sucks and lose the shroud and mount it against the condenser..
any input?

You usually want a intercooler to cool down the hot air before it goes back into the engine so that pic and the way you have listed is gonna defeat the whole purpose of the intercooler. the best way would be as follows from the front bumper back intercooler then condenser, radiator, dual fans, motor and let them suck air in like there ment to. My FMIC fits perfect in the front bumper (daily driven on 14 psi) and mine is the size of my mishimoto radiator

So your looking to Hide the Intercooler??
There is several ways to mount the IC.
Some guys on here have pushed the radiator/ condensor back closer to the engine and placed the IC at the Radiators old location... belive this came about because of the Bumper support.
"V" Mount and "7" Mount may be interesting to you also.

thats how my setup is being done on My Race car.
My Worry is the Upper Rad hose getting possibly Crimped because its SHORTER than it would normally be because the Radiator is Closer to the engine. (samco I may have to Ditch and get a custom one)
V-Mount is my Preferred Way but Don't trust it in Traffic (stop/go) if i ever want to drive it anywhere other than the Track/Moving.
Check out a Hyper Rev or 2 - Done By Quite a few Guys overseas + shorter piping = a lil' better throttle responce.
Kind of like Cold Air intake vs. Short Ram intake.
If using anything other than Piop-up lights - the FMIC will Sit PERFECTLY Under the Rad support, and you can Just Cut holes (Behind headlights) to run the piping.
*Pretty much Drill holes in the top of the Rad support to Anchor the FMIC to it.

so with this said, the pic i showed shouldnt be daily driven?
cuz like my arc sidemount..
How many guys have ARC sidemounts?? how much can it handle?

No,THat pic's setup perfectly Fine for daily Driving.Your Basically just Shortning the piping.
I do plan to Duct and make panels To Direct Air Through them both just to insure i don't Lose air going around it and under it.
Its Gravity Involved w/ V-mount setups that scare me - w/ the Routing of the Hoses.Need prob Dual Fans and a Intercooler fan to be Super Safe on Daily'ing a V-mount - Unless its Done PERFECT.
Sidemount can handle quite a bit but HEAVY conditions (Track,Spirited driving) could Heat Soak Slightly and Opening's not normally Big enough on the side of a bumper to Flow air AS much as a FMIC setup.

oh i see, was trying to create something without having to relocate the battery and still be efficient and sleeper action =p
but i mean, shorter the pipe = less cooling? or it doesnt really matter..
just dont wanna have my ARC sidemount and accidently break soemthing cuz playing on upgrading turbo n boostin 1.5bar

Pipe length really has nothing to do w/ cooling in that sence.
Sidemount w/ its size I'd say 1.5 bar is probably waaay past its efficiency.Needs to be Bigger for More Boost.Even though it is ARC.
Relocating the battery can be done or not depending on the battery or piping. Some FMIC kits piping is the reason the battery is in the way.Just Get a Miata Battery and No relocate needed.
all the input is greatly appreciated and i will be posting pics when im done..
prolly within feb, this beast should be complete
