My car has been acting weird, so I was going to use the snap on scan tool we have at school. I have a 1997 180sx sr in a 1990 hatch, my new motor is obd II, I am wondering because it is jdm, what connector I use with the scan tool. Anyone have experience?

no, you need a consult port wired to the ecu, you need a consult cable and a program like nissan datascan, nistune, conzult ect.
Engines that were not offered in the states are not required to have the same obd capabilities as a US offered 96+ car.

That brings me to my next question, how much for the nistune board put in my 97 180sx j4 ecu, with software for tuning myself?

tell me what you need and Ill send you a pm so not to possibly break any rules.
Do you need a consult cable? Do you perfer usb or serial?
Do you need a consult connector? (if your car is 91-94 it will have it but I know your not a 94)
Are you wanting us to install it?

I believe I am going to have you install a usb consult port, I think it was a type 4 board or something you told me a while back. I am wondering why I have a consult port on my 1990 hatch, but I guess its not hooked up to anything, cause the snapon thing read error.
So I have seen an ecu with a usb port on the side, but am not really sure how it works. Nistune is a standalone?

Nistune is still the stock ecu, just a daughter board and program that offeres VERY similar controll and tuning features of a standalone. I think its better than a standalone in many respects but some would argue this point. Anyways, thats how I feel at least.
The port in your 90 is not actually a consult port, I have never seen anything hooked up to them before and Im not sure what they are actually for because I didnt think that the ecus that came stock in a 90 offered anything but the blinking light to diagnose anything.
Anyways there seems to be some confusion about the consult port. We cant wire that in for you unleess you were to actually send us the harness. Its not hard to wire on in though. Its just a few wires that get wired in to your ecu pinout. That port allows you to plug in either a usb or serial consult cable that then connects to your laptop.
The ecus you have seen with a usb port were most likely a calium board or a nistune type 1 ecu. You dont have the possibility to just simply wire in a usb port to your ecu with nistune though, you have to wire in the consult port and then use a consult cable.
