Looking for the actual number that any dealership or service shop would use concerning removing the upper timing chain guide as it was considered not necessary.

I have a 95 s14 if it makes a diff.

Thanks

what was the question?

remove it yourself.. way easy

remove spark plug wires *remember order if you don't already know it by now
remove valve cover ( bolts holding the valve cover on ) * check FSM
remove the guide *don't drop any bolts

replace valve cover gasket and spark plug gasket if needed * usually old and hard
re-arrange gaskets and put the valve cover back into place
tighten bolts to spec and tightening order from FSM * not tight at all

good luck

Dealer will have it on file, have them look it up for the Altima, that's what it originally came from. In fact some dealers will try to argue the TSB on a 240SX since it's not the exact same engine as a FWD KA.

It was never a recall though, they removed them from 97-98 engines KA's if I remember, correctly?

this is the only one I know of for my 95:

That is for an Altima though, will they do it for a 240sx?

also, would they just remove the deleted timing chain guides? or do they also include a new tension guide?

Thanks guys...yeah I'm having my valve cover gasket replaced more than likely next week by shop. I know most would argue do it yourself..and I would try it if I could afford to make a mistake. But currently at this time I can't afford any mishaps, and I like the added insurance of having mechanic do it. I might give it a try myself when I ever get back to finishing shaving the letters of my spare valve cover and it's painted.

You can do it in under ten minutes. Is it really worth your money? The hardest part is not losing the bolts.

cut and you wont loose the bolts

cut?! :-/

loosen the bolts with a wrench, when you get it loose enough.. do the rest by hand..

Would I need a torque wrench...I never really used sealant before...certain way you gotta get it on the semi circles I think it goes on? what about the spark plug gasket, do you have to put it on with the cover at the same time...or cna you lay the gasket down first, and then sit the valve cover down on it?

Biggest worry is not getting a tight seal, and having even more oil leaking than before

Okay I noticed today around like 2k rpm the tach needle dropped a line and then raised back and then did it again once more back to back. I could actually feel it this time while driving..almost like I tapped the gas real fast twice.

Any ideas..I read about the IACV but I thought those problems were just at idle

you don't need a torque wrench, but people tend to overtighten the valve cover.

if you are just removing the upper timing chain guide, than you don't really need to use any liquid sealant. If you ended up replacing the valve cover gasket, than you would put some on the rubber plug.

the ridges at the top of the cover is where you valve cover gasket rubber plugs go

you would put a very little amount of sealant ( very very easy )

if you wanted to remove the other upper timing chain guide, and clean/inspect the tensioner, than you'd have to remove the camshaft sprocket cover.. which is far more difficult..

but just removing the upper-timing chain guide, I'd say it's a beginner job and you could pull it off with ease.
